KANDOO CARNIVAL - STATE EDUCATION WEEK

Next week is State Education Week and our school will be celebrating a whole school reward  for PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) with a Kandoo Carnival.  Last term a challenge was issued to reach a whole school target of students earning 20 000 Kandoos in 4 weeks. They smashed that target earning  more than 23 900.  While students were working towards this goal, teachers collected student feedback about ideas for a whole school reward activity. The  PBL Team have brought these together for a Kandoo Carnival which will take place in the afternoon session as the 'Marvellous Monday'  reward.  Parents/carers are very welcome to join in on Monday afternoon for this activity, meeting on the Senior Oval About 1.45pm.  There will be more information on Skoolbag tomorrow with a list of activities.

REQUESTS FOR 2023 EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS

This week parents and caregivers are able to download a form to provide feedback to assist with class planning for 2023. If students will be moving from Beerwah State School at the end of the year (other than Year 6) we ask that the school be advised via this form. There is also a section for preference for educational settings.

The placement of children in an appropriate learning environment is taken very seriously at Beerwah and there are many elements to take into consideration. One of the factors relates to parent/carer preferences for a particular educational environment. Parents have the opportunity to put in writing educational reasons for a specific learning environment. Whilst all requests will be considered it may not be possible to fill all preferences. Parent preferences are for placement in a learning environment and NOT for a specific teacher, as teachers for year levels will not be decided until all staffing at the school has been finalised. Requests must be in writing and need to be addressed to the ‘Principal’ and handed into the office. These forms are due by Friday, 28 October. No late requests will be accepted.  2023 Education Settings Form

2023 STUDENT LEADER NOMINATIONS

Interested Year 5 students have been working on nominations for a 2023 Student Leadership Position. The behaviour previously demonstrated by students wishing to be considered for leadership is an important consideration in the selection process. The behaviours that have been consistently demonstrated will indicate:

  • A willingness to be a Safe, Respectful, Active Learner and consistently demonstrate the ‘Fab Four’ foundation behaviours: follow instructions promptly; keep our hands and feet to ourselves; We say Yes@Beerwah and; use kind words
  • They are known as a respectful student

    • In their learning they show that they have sound organisational skills, have persistence, confidence and resilience
    • A willingness to “Get Along” and to participate actively in the life of the school.

    HODC Report

Our student council have been very busy over the last term with many projects coming to fruition. Student leadership places an important role in school life because it promotes student agency and gives children an opportunity to develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills. These skills sets are reflected in the General Capabilities section of the Australian Curriculum.

See these projects below and stay tuned for one more exciting student council announcement to come soon… but maybe you can find a clue in another section of this newsletter?

    Matt Deady (HODC)

    PAINTING CHAIRS

Over a period of four weeks, student council have undertaken a project to revitalise the outdoor seating at the school. They decided to paint the outdoor chairs and table in our undercover areas in the colours of our four school houses. Many hours of work from the students went into this project and I’m sure you’ll agree the results are very uplifting.

A big thank-you to Mrs C for the drop sheets and clean-up buckets, Mr Rob for priming and ‘touch up’ work, our wonderful cleaners for helping us tidy up and the staff who helped out with painting (Ms Rae, Mr D, Miss Coralie and Miss Gayle).

    DAY FOR DANIEL

On Friday, 28 October we will be honouring the memory of Daniel Morcombe by participating in Day for Daniel.

There will be a special parade, run by our student leaders, which will teach some key messages of personal safety. Afterwards the whole school will participate in our annual walk around the oval.

We ask that everyone wears red as part of the day. Families are welcome to join the parade an oval walk. We will be starting at 9:00amam in the school hall.

    RUBIK’S CUBE CLUB

Student council have also decided to hold a Rubik’s Cube club! This is on Monday and Friday in the library at second break. We have students with a range of understanding (including those at the very start like Mr Deady!).

We see some excellent peer tutoring occurring as our Rubik’s ‘experts’ help to explain the and demonstrate the steps to our beginners. A ‘competition’ will be held on the Monday and Friday lunchtimes of Week 8.

    REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
    • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
    • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

    ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

    PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.  QKR! How to Guide

QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.

    • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
    • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
    • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
    • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

    HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat  that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

    STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

    Other Reports

    Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

    WORKING BEE

Thank you to all who turned out for the working bee last Saturday. We managed to tidy up some garden beds and plant many more natives, they will be spreading and flowering in no time, attracting bees and all the wonderful nature we intended. We also made a start on clearing out for the storm season, as we can never be too prepared.

We will resume our working bee’s next year in Term 1. We plan to hold them every 2nd Saturday of each term from 9-12. It’s a small amount of effort for a huge return in our wonderful school grounds and appearance. Isn’t it lovely to wander past native flowering plants as you engage with the school? Our children can learn so much from nature and helping it along with a little effort is a great way to connect with other parents, and great for our own wellbeing by connecting with nature. Come along and try next year!

    RECYCLING PROGRAM

P&C have registered with Terracycle as a collection/drop-off point for various things that normally don’t get recycled. Currently there is a box in the Library for the collection of old pens and stationery that no longer works (not pencils). Take a look to see what can be included.

We also have a box for old dental products to get recycled. Sponsored by Colgate, please recycle your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, dental floss packets, and electric toothbrush heads. Visit www.terracycle.com.au to find out more. Over time we’ll add more boxes to recycle other products. Items can be dropped off anytime the Library is open, boxes are beside the window.

It’s a wonderful initiative to reduce our landfill and look after our environment. As an added bonus, P&C will receive funds as we send off our recycling donations. I encourage you to reduce your landfill and contribute to our recycling program. It makes sense for the planet, sense for the P&C, and sense for your environmental conscience.

    Kandoo Joey's Playgroup

Imaginative Play October kicked off with children engaged in imaginary play becoming anything they want. Dress-up play creates the opportunity for children to design their own story and become anything they want! It is not only a fun-filled experience but can also be considered vital to the skill development of a child. This week we read the story “I Wish I Had a Pirate Suit” by author Pamela Allen. The children acted out their pirate skills while talking like a pirate and using their imaginary swords.

We are having a visit from Kristy from Bushkids Sunshine Coast on 26 October. BUSHkids are our local Partner in the Community for the Sunshine Coast region. They support the Beerwah community, in particular children aged 0 – 6 years and their families. They can supply information on the different pathways that they can offer for support and answer any questions that families may have.

Kandoo Joeys is open to all families with before-school-aged children and runs every Wednesday from 9.00am-11.00am in J Block, next to the Admin Block.

Come and join in the fun and social connections as your children learn through play at Kandoo Joeys Playgroup. For more information contact Linda Merwood at playgroup@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

    Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/

    Helping Hands OHSC

Helping Hands provides quality before and after school care. This service forms strong, collaborative ties with the school, children, families, and the local community; to ensure the needs and interests of every child and family are supported. We provide an environment in which children feel safe and have fun. Afternoon tea is included.

We are located in D Block which is next to the Senior oval. For the children’s safety it is a requirement that you park in the allocated staff car park and use the footpaths to walk to and from the Centre. The car park will be open in the morning 6:30 to 7:30 and afternoon 5:00 to 6:00. Outside of these times, you will need to use the normal school carpark located on Old Gympie Rd. Children must be supervised at all times by an adult.
