Term 4 Weeks 1 and 2

Principal’s Message

Welcome back to Term 4!

Yesterday I met with all the Principals from the Glenrock Network and our Director Educational Leadership, Steve Harris. We focused on the outstanding work schools are doing in promoting student attendance, well being and the impact it is having on the academic success of all students.

As a school we believe that all students can show progress with resilience and persistence being part of the keys to success. Persistent students don't give up easily. They are able to analyse a problem and develop a system, structure or strategy to attack the problem. They also recognise when the approach they are taking is not working and look for another strategy. We sometimes see students who give up easily when they don't solve a problem straight away, saying things like "I can't do it!", "It's too hard." or they put down any answer in an effort to move on.

Everyone has things that are easy and things that are hard. Practising the basics or foundations never stops for any of us. Sport is one of the areas in life where no matter how elite the player, drills are always included that refine basic skills which are the building blocks to the highly technical skills elite players use.

I have been lucky enough to watch Olympic divers and their coaches train. They are happy enough to spend a 2 hour session practising basic dives that focus on the entry into the water. Imagine if we all applied this level of attention to everything we do. That would be persistence!

What do you do when your child says its too hard? How do you help them build persistence to stick at something that's hard? Do you value persistence?

Progress is all about personal best. Understanding where each student is and what they need to do to improve. Parents and carers are important partners in making this happen for all our students.

Thank you for all that you do in ensuring your children are at school every day ready to learn!

Science and Engineering Challenge

Stage 3 attended the Science and Engineering Challenge on Thursday 17 October.

Our three Dudley teams battled it out against teams from other schools in the region. The activities included bridge building; earthquake-proof tower construction; deciphering fibre optic coded messages; electricity challenges plus others.

It was a fun-filled day and our students performed brilliantly, coming in at second, third and fifth place overall.

Congratulations to all students that attended.

FROM THE OFFICE

THE DUDLEY SPORTS DESK

Bike Riding Sport Choices

Unfortunately Mr Costolo has sustained a rib injury on the weekend and Miss Reed currently has a shoulder injury.

This Friday there will be no bike riding.

Those students will join the Beach Sports group with Mr Costolo and Mr Horadam.(could be a win/win with hot weather predicted).

We will need parent helpers for transport. Could you please advise the office if you are able to help transport.

Next Friday 1st November the year 4 students will be at the Sydney Excursion so there will be no bike riding.

Week 4 Friday 8th  November will be bike riding as normal and we plan to leave at 1:20pm on that day.

Thank you

John Costolo
