West Lakes Shore School Newsletter

TERM 3, Week 3 - 9 August 2019

PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

External School Review

The review team were blown away by the positive community and strong collaborative ways of working.  Initial feedback highlighted a range of excellence and the passion and commitment staff demonstrated. It was a true reflection of the hard work and effort of staff, students and community, and demonstrates what we can achieve together. Strengths focused on our collaborative staff teams, positive whole-school culture with an emphasis on 'be kind', planning for continuous improvement, quality and continuous review of teaching and learning, rich data use, knowledge and support of each child and exemplary performance development reflections and feedback. Listening to and using feedback at all school levels (teacher-staff-students-leaders-community) is a core part of our strategic plan beliefs and a strong part of how we will continue to grow and develop. Parent and Governing Council feedback was really appreciated and we will continue to look at ways we can action some of your suggestions. I strongly urge all families to continuously provide feedback and have your say in the directions and improvements here at school. Let’s congratulate and recognise all of the staff and community for our partnership and commitment to your child/ren’s wellbeing, engagement and achievement. The full report detailing further directions that will inform our updated School Improvement Plan will be available within 6-8 weeks and will be shared with the community.

Learning Design Assessment and Moderation:

This term’s Pupil Free Day will focus on showcasing excellence in practice across our partnership sites. In order to design learning that is challenging and to differentiate and match learning to individual needs some staff will be sharing ideas and expertise from their own practice. At a recent celebration staff meeting we showcased staff successes with the Numerical Acumen from SD6, the strong automaticity and team teaching practice from SD1 and 2, and the Year 5 trial of Maths in the inclusive classroom. This trial strongly supports student agency and choice in selecting differentiated learning tasks. We continue to ‘Teach on’ and showcase the excellence from every class across our school.

Camps

The Year 5 camp to Aldinga was an outstanding success. Year 4, Year 7 and our Year 6 Zoo Snooze all occur throughout Term 3. The time and commitment of staff to undertake these events is truly appreciated.

Student/Parent/Teacher Interviews:

At West Lakes Shore School all students have their own SMARTaR learning goals in Numeracy and writing. Students in Year3 -7 reflect on their outcomes and track their progress. Students in Reception – Year 2 discuss their learning verbally with their peers and teachers. This term optional interviews are usually offered so students and parents can attend a meeting with their teacher to discuss what children know and need to be able to do and talk about their learning goals. Information of how to book these will be available for families in the week 5 upcoming newsletter.

CLASS PLACEMENT 2020

Organising the wealth of information to be used to support our class placement process for 2020 takes a considerable amount of time as we aim to ensure fair and equitable creation of classes. 2020 classes will be created based on a wide range of information including gender, students with additional needs, academic abilities and teacher, student and parent input. We create all classes with the needs of your child’s learning at the heart of the decision-making. Students are asked by teachers to nominate others with whom they play and learn successfully. We acknowledge student friendships as an important part of your child’s schooling, though this is balanced with teacher and student input to ensure children develop their resilience and can connect and make new friendships. Teachers have the overall responsibility to work with their colleagues to ensure consistency in allocating information to each student across a year level. Key software is then utilised by staff to create and adapt classes for 2020.

As part of our partnership in learning we invite parents/caregivers to provide any significant information to be considered for the 2020 class placement process.

Please submit information in writing for any of the following:

  • Your child has a social and emotional, health, behaviour or learning issue.
  • There is confidential information relating to issues between families that needs considering as part of class placement.
  • Your child has a disability and recognised school NEP/OCOP plan and key information needs to be considered linked to this.
  • Other mitigating factors that may impact significantly on your child’s learning in 2020

At West Lakes Shore School all teachers are qualified and we ask that you are careful about not making judgement based on the information provided by others. In every class across school students work in a range of ability levels. We differentiate the learning to support each child’s needs. Whether your child is in a straight class or a composite class does not affect the level of their learning.

Key Information that parents cannot provide to be considered for class placement includes:

  • Requests to have a specific teacher
  • Requests to not have a specific teacher
  • Requests NOT to be in a composite class
  • Requests for separations – these can only occur if there is significant history involving ongoing issues

Please ensure the information you wish to provide is sent in writing, addressed to carol.press854@schools.sa.edu.au, with Class Placement 2020 in the subject line, by Friday September 27th. (Week 10, Term 3) Previous parent information is not kept on record. Information from parents is required to be submitted annually and in writing.

If a large number of separations are requested then these cannot be met due to the overall requirement to ensure fair and equitable classes as part of the agreed Educational Industrial Agreements for teachers. The school PAC committee finalise classes based on this agreement. Final class placement allocations are then approved by leadership due to consideration of confidential information.

Information regarding your child’s class placement and teacher for 2020 will come out with the end of Year reports in the final week of Term 4.

We thank parents/caregivers for their support and understanding of this complex and time-consuming class placement process.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS - 17 - 23 AUGUST 2019

Reading is my Secret Power!

Each year schools in Australia celebrate Children’s Book Week.  The aim is to encourage a love of reading and promote books of excellence for young people. Short lists of recently published books are released and on the Friday immediately before Book Week, the Book of the Year and winners in various categories are announced.

At school, the short-listed books will be on display in the Resource Centre and teachers will be reading them to classes during the term. We also have a second copy of these books in special chests to be used in classrooms.

The Book Week theme this year is “Reading is my Secret Power!” We will be celebrating by:

  • Having a Book Week Parade/Assembly on Wednesday, 21st August, 9:30am on the asphalt, weather permitting.  Students are asked to dress as their favourite book character.  Parents are welcome to join us for the parade/assembly.  We are encouraging students to use their imagination and create/design their costume.
  • Buddy classes will also be participating in a special activity in the Resource Centre during Book Week.
  • Book Week art/craft activities will be offered in the Resource Centre each lunch time during the week.

SPORTS CORNER

SAPSASA Basketball

Boys Team

On Wednesday 24th of July eight year 6/7 boys were lucky enough to compete in SAPSASA Basketball at Marion Stadium. We played a total of 6 games with a 2 win 4 loss record. It was a very tough competition and we played against some taller opposition from larger colleges and only lost 2 of our games by small amounts. All boys played very well and should be proud of their efforts. Thank you to Sarah (my mum) for coaching and to Mr. Davidson for scoring and all the supportive parents who watched on the day.  - Owen H-B

Girls Team

Our girls SAPSASA basketball team also took 8 members to Marion Stadium to compete. We played 6 games winning 4 of those against some quality opposition. Teams we played included; Stella Maris, St. Michaels College, Concordia, Black Forest, Fulham North and Westminster. Well done to all the girls who played you did WLSS very proud!   Scarlett S & Chloe P

School Footy Team - Year 5/6/7

On June 29th our school was chosen to represent the Eagles zone and play a carnival against 3 other teams - Paringa Park Primary, Flagstaff Hill Primary and Mercedes College. We tried really hard in what was an extremely wet and cold day. We worked well as a team and managed to have one win but lost to other schools by a few goals. We were the only school to have year 5's playing! Great effort by all the boys!!!

Year 7 Students - High School Allocations

High School allocation packs will be sent home with your child next Friday 16th August 2019.  Please read all the information provided and send the information back to the allocated high school (please do not return it to West Lakes Shore School).  If you have changed your mind about sending your child to a state high school (going private or moving into a different area), contact the allocated high school asap to inform them of the change/decision.  They will have waiting lists and can offer the position to another student.

If you are unhappy about your child's allocation you can request a review of the allocation process.  This must be in writing and include any additional information that was not provided in your original application.  The review process may not be applicable for secondary schools with a capacity management plan (Henley High School / Adelaide High School).

Requests for a review must be lodged with the department by 5pm Friday 30 August 2019.  Requests received after this date will not be accepted.

Students Leaving WLSS at the end of 2019

STUDENTS LEAVING END 2019 - We require families to inform us if their child will be leaving WLSS at the end of 2019 as soon as possible (Reception to Year 6 children).  This then allows us to see where we have vacancies within the school for parents wishing to enrol at WLSS for 2020 and also helps us plan our class structures.  We understand that you might still be deciding or awaiting acceptance into a private school for Year 7 especially for those Year 6 students.  Please forward any information to Janet Massey - janet.massey644@schools.sa.edu.au  or Rachel Roe - rachel.roe536@schools.sa.edu.au

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING

  • VISITORS / Signing In or Out -  Please make sure you come to the front office and sign in and out if you are here to volunteer.  If you need to drop something off for your child, please leave it with the front office and we will arrange for your child to come and collect it.  All adults on site need front office permission and a PINK visitors badge.
  • APPOINTMENTS / EARLY PICK UPS - If you are here to pick up your child please either organise with them to meet you in the front office (note in diary) at a pre arranged time or talk to the teacher/front office staff beforehand.  Please note: We will not let children leave the school during 'school hours' on their own - they must be signed out by a parent/guardian.
  • FRONT OFFICE - This is a very busy place first thing in the morning and after school - please encourage your children to walk around the admin building instead of cutting through the office at these times, unless they need to talk to office staff or drop paperwork off.  Please do not bring bikes or scooters through the front office either.
  • GATES - We endeavor to open the gates by 8:30am, but on the rare occasion we might be slightly late.  The gates will be closed every evening at 3:30pm - if you are still on the premises after this time the Main front gate will be open until 4pm - after this time you will have to exit via the Staff Car Park.
  • STAFF CAR PARK - Just a friendly reminder to all families that the Staff Car Park is not for your children to walk through - either under your supervision or not.  We want all of our children to be safe at WLSS.  The only time parents and children are able to exit via the Staff Car park is if they are on site for a parent teacher meeting and the other exit gates have been locked.

WEST LAKES SHORE SCHOOL OSHC

Please be advised that OSHC has a wait list on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until further notice. From time to time other days may be at capacity too.  PLEASE make sure you contact OSHC - 8242 3141 if your child will NOT be attending OSHC on their normal day, either due to illness or other family reasons.

SUSTAINABILITY CORNER

Wasting (food) Away

Did you know that in just one day, children at WLSS threw away 27 whole, uneaten sandwiches, 21 whole pieces of fruit, 9 unopened chip packets, 10 juices, as well as muffins, yogurt squeezies, packets of ham and canteen meals?

That equates to a whopping $13,400 per year out of family budgets each year. A number of pests find this wasted food irresistible too, and the school is having to spend money on pest removal each year. Furthermore, it is expensive to dispose of this waste as landfill. Put simply, it's money down the drain.

But it's not all about money. This wasted food and packaging is also a huge burden on the environment. Think of the water needed to grow those crops and feed animals, petrol to transport the food, and oil & energy used to package food.

Please help us combat this problem:

1) have a chat with your child to discuss what food they will eat at recess and lunch.

2) Provide more manageable portion sizes for your child. This may mean chopping up fruit or purchasing smaller items. Consider buying bulk packs of snacks and divide them into individual containers or segmented ‘bento-style’ lunch boxes.

3) Pop all food into re-usable containers that won't be binned along with plastic film wrapping or plastic sandwich bags. Write your child's name on the container and explain that the containers should be placed back in their lunchbox for the next day (including the uneaten food so you can see what your child is and isn't eating).  Just remember if it's in a sealed container it doesn't need to be wrapped in Glad Wrap.

Have a look at http://www.foodwise.com.au/.  This South Australian website has some great information and educational tools surrounding food waste and what we can do to stop throwing away food and how to be creative and use it up.
