Term 4 Calendar

From the Principal, Ms Hanson

We’re back and in full swing! Welcome back to Term 4!

It has been so lovely to welcome back all of our wonderful students as well as some very special new BHPS students (Luca, Celeste and Summer) after the Spring holidays. It was fantastic to see all our students refreshed and revitalised with big smiles on their faces ready for learning. I would like to commend our students for their enthusiastic attitude towards learning this week, continuing to demonstrate their learning super powers as they work towards achieving their learning goals.

Term 4 is traditionally a busy term with many events and celebrations. Our school calendar will be regularly updated as we receive information in terms of how we are able to proceed with events adhering to current or updated restrictions. There are still some activities that we would usually hold that may not be able to go ahead or could proceed with a slightly different format. We will continue to communicate as we are able in regards to Term 4 activities, end of year events and celebrations and endeavour to provide families with as much notice as we can. Thank you for your understanding.

School Planning for 2021!

As we plan for next year it is vital that we have accurate data regarding definite enrolments. Changes to enrolments can make a significant difference in terms of staffing, classroom accommodation and actual class formations. So please, if you are moving to another other area next year and have children not returning to us in 2021, we would appreciate you notifying the school office. Similarly, if you plan to start your child in Kindergarten next year and you have not yet enrolled him or her, or completed all documentation, then please contact the school office as a matter of priority as our Kinder 2021 children will soon commence their transition to school program.

From time to time we have families who extend their holiday and will therefore not return to school at the commencement of the school year. It is imperative that the school receives notification, in writing, that the children are returning to school prior to the end of first term, if they are to be included in the numbers that are submitted to the DoE. So, if you are extending your holiday, please complete the form below with as much information as possible regarding return to school dates. It is important that this information is in writing and signed by parents/ carers.

COMMUNITY FORUMS- SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANNING

Thank you so much to the parents/ carers who recently completed the Tell them From Me parent survey. We really value your input and completing the survey is one way that community ‘voice’ can be heard! As the 2020 school year and current school planning cycle draws to a close, a key focus for our school is thoroughly evaluating our current strategic directions as well as preparing for the development of our 2021-2024 Strategic Improvement Plan.

We have established a BHPS School Improvement Team comprising staff and community members and we are currently seeking more interested parents/ carers to join this team to participate in community forums during Term 4.

If this is something that you would be interested in, please email us at school on beaconhill-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au, providing your name and contact information as well as your child’s name and class.

We are looking to host these forums via Zoom throughout the term. However, we are also exploring other opportunities to gather feedback. We look forward to hosting similar forums with our students as well!

Staffing Update

We warmly welcome Miss Alice Scott-Wells, school counsellor, to BHPS for this term. Alice will be at BHPS on Wednesdays for Term 4. We are also grateful to have Mr Dudley continue to work closely with us on alternate Mondays during Term 4.

DIGITAL CHILD SAFETY HANDBOOK

We are pleased to advise that a new edition of this valuable safety resource is now valuable online with updated safety content.

We urge all parents and carers to download this latest edition and discuss the safety content with your children.

School Travel for 2021

2021 school travel applications are now open

Applications for student travel in 2021 opened from Monday 12 October 2020.

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass for 2021 can now apply online. A new application should be submitted if a student is applying for a school travel pass for the first time or requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).

Students who have changed school/campus, changed address, repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should re-apply or update their details.

*Applications must be completed by the student's parent or legal guardian if the student is aged under 16 years. Students 16 years and over must complete the application form themselves.

Where there is a change of distance eligibility based on a student’s grade, the system will automatically update a student’s entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If a student needs to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2020 to ensure that current student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card remains valid. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2020, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2021.

Students residing in Rural and Regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the commencement of the new school year from their nominated operator, this may be distributed via the school or sent direct to their address. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/Parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

New Concession Entitlement Cards

Transport for NSW will be replacing the below cards with Transport Concession Entitlement Cards (TCEC) from October 2020:

 Senior Secondary Student Concession Card (16 years and over) – also used by Mature Secondary Students (18 years and over), Distance Education Students and Home School Students

 Proof of Age card (when a student under 16 years of age looks older)

 Boarder Rail Pass.

All previous cards will be valid until they expire. Students who require a Transport Concession Entitlement Card should speak with their school administration staff.

Enquiries regarding school student travel can be submitted to Transport for NSW at: https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback

Congratulations Year 6 Debating Team!

Today our Year 6 debating team competed in the first round of the finals of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Having won their pool last term, they are now in the final knock-out rounds, where they need to win to stay in the competition. Following a very tight contest, Abby, Emily, Isabel, Aleisha and Brie, were successful in defeating Valentine Public School. Congratulations girls on your outstanding performance this morning and good luck in your next debate in two weeks time.

In the garden…

6R had a wonderful morning in the garden this week! Bunnings Warringah Mall kindly donated a tray of seedlings for our Veggie Garden. The students made sure the soil was ready by turning it and adding mature compost from our compost bins and searching for the best spot to plant each seedling. Soon, there should be a variety of vegetables and herbs growing, such as tomatoes, basil, capsicum and spinach!

An added bonus was finding a lot of potatoes! Unfortunately, some weren’t quite ready, but we will keep them in the dark and see if they sprout, that way we can plant them again!

In The Library

NEXT WEEK IS BOOK WEEK

A time to celebrate reading, authors, illustrators and imagination. On Tuesday we are very lucky to be visited by Sue Whiting who is a wonderful Australian author. She writes picture books and novels for all ages. She will pass on some of her knowledge and expertise to inspire the students in all grades to read, write and appreciate the written and spoken word. I am very excited to meet her.

Wednesday 21st October is the book parade. All students are asked to dress up in their favourite book character or curious creature. It is unfortunate that this is yet another event that parents miss out on seeing life but we will endeavour to take photos and videos to post on our Instagram and Facebook pages. There will be prizes for the best, most creative, most inventive and amazing costumes for each grade and the teachers. Thank you to the P&C for kindly donating prizes for the day. It should be a fun day and I hope everyone gets involved.

BORROWING

Students will continue to borrow from the library every week. I ask that all books are returned by week 6 ready for auditing and stocktake. We are very fortunate to have such a well stocked library and important that we keep track of everything. if you are unable to find a book please contact me or the school and we can invoice you so you can pay for the book and we can purchase a replacement.  I appreciate your cooperation.

Reading everyday is so very important to the development of children's minds, concentartin, imagination and creativity.

READING MAKES YOU SMARTER.

Happy reading

Ethics Volunteers Needed

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TEACH ETHICS AT BEACON HILL PUBLIC

We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children. This could be a parent or grandparent, or someone from the local community with an interest in lifelong learning and rapport with children.  Volunteers undergo a free online training course from Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program, and then teach for half an hour a week. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Full lesson materials are provided. The curriculum is fully developed and approved by the Department of Education and volunteers find it a positive and rewarding experience. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school and to find out more, please contact Tammy Anthonisz, the Northern Beaches Regional Manager, at tammy.anthonisz@gmail.com (ph. 0414 763 907) or visit www.primaryethics.com.au
