Weir State School Newsletter

Term 2 Week 5

Principal's Pen

WELCOME TO THIS EDITION – Another busy week has gone by with plenty of things happening around our great school. NAPLAN is over for another year and a big thank you must go to the teachers in delivering the tests and students who did an amazing job in keeping on task. A fantastic effort and well done on the national tests. Our school is continuing to improve and we have plenty more planned improvements as we move through the term. Exciting times for Weir State School and our great community

STUDENT BEHAVIOUR - Please continue to remind your children about school behaviour expectations. I have sent a few students home over the past week for breaches in behaviour and will continue to do so if their behaviour doesn’t meet school expectation. Every student has the right to learn and feel safe. It is my job as the Principal to provide that environment. I will help any student achieve success however we cannot achieve this success if parent support isn’t clear if your child is not following school expectations. Hitting or swearing at Weir State School is not tolerated. Please remember our BIG 3 PILLARS OF EXPECTATION ARE – BE SAFE , BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE - WEIR STRONG ……WEIR SMART

SEASON 1 SPORT CONCLUDES – Our first season of sport is over and our school has been very competitive in all season I sports including Rugby League, Netball and Hockey. I have had glowing reports from our sport teachers and those teachers from other schools about the great behaviour, spirit and fair play displayed by our students. Congratulations Weir State School students for representing our school so well. You have made us all very proud. I look forward to the beginning of season 2 sport that begins this week

FLU AND SICKNESS– Over the last week we have had quite a few students come down with the flu and severe tummy bugs. Every student goes through phases of trying to pull one over the eyes of Mum and Dad and complain of not feeling the best. Please make sure if your child is genuinely ill that you keep them home. If you send your child to school sick they are likely to come home early and they can also cause other students to become ill.

UNDER 8s DAY - Our Under 8s Gala Day will be taking place this Thursday with plenty happier for the younger generation of our school. We will plenty of activities including a petting zoo, jumping castle and art activities. A BIG thanks to Ms Grant from Year 2 for leading the organisation of the day and for making I’m sure what will be an exciting Under 8s event

BOYS AND READING - In Australia and indeed world wide, there is a disparity in achievement levels between girls and boys. In fact, boys' achievement levels in reading show a consistent deficit when compared to girls'. This affects their ongoing learning in all subject areas, especially now when assessment is very literacy focussed. This is independent of socioeconomic ranking and is specific to literacy, not to other areas of learning.

What can we do about this? Research in the UK showed boys' reading scores improved sharply once fathers, uncles or older brothers began reading to them. This intervention involved reading together for five minutes per day. Research shows that "three-quarters of children aged five to seven are read to regularly by their mothers, but only half by their fathers. Boys need role models in this as in everything else. Part of the problem is that too many boys see reading as a female activity and shy away from it." Boys need men reading to them from an early age and helping them learn to read, so they grow up seeing reading as a legitimate male activity.

Hints for Fathers:

· Read regularly to your son and listen to him read as he gets older. Anyone can teach him to play football but you are in the best position to teach him that reading is important.

· When you do listen to your son read don’t be critical or correct mistakes but help out when he asks for assistance. It's not a test. Don't worry if your own literacy skills are not high. Listening is all that’s required to help him develop a positive attitude to reading.

· Research shows that if a father (or other male role model) reads to his son for five minutes a day, his literacy skills will improve.

THIS WEEKS PROVERB – ‘Having an education allows you to go through life on your feet and not your knees!’

Thanks for reading and go the COWBOYS

Our Wakakirri team has been working really hard on this year’s story, “Disney Through The Years!”. Pictured is our talented and enthusiastic Wakakirri choreographer, Ms Lydia Jahnke teaching our Wakakirri team one of our many dances!

Our Senior Choir are also working hard on their new song, “Thank You For The Music”.  We look forward to sharing it with you all at our Week 10 School Parade.  Seventeen of them have applied to go to the annual Choral Camp! Here they are having lots of fun during our Thursday rehearsal.

Our Preps have been having a great time in our Drama lessons. This term they have been learning about different characters, costumes and using our voices with expression. Some of them are pictured below. We are also looking forward to Under 8s day where we will share the song, “It’s A Small World”.

Townsville Shell Club

Free Holiday Activity

Townsville Shell Club will be hosting its 50th annual Shell Show on the weekend of July 7th and 8th. We invite all students to come along to the Orchid Society Hall on the corner of Charles Street and Bamford Lane, Kirwan (opposite the Red Rooster) and be amazed at the wondrous world of shells in the displays and on the sales tables. Experts are available to answer any questions students may have about their own shells. The displays reinforce many STEM concepts taught in schools by providing concrete examples that will focus on improving performance of students of any age but are so interesting the kids will never know it’s learning!

There are age-appropriate activities organised for children. All children who attend will be given a free bag of shells. The Shell Show will also provide parents with a quiet sanctuary away from the roar of V8 engines while they view the exhibits.

Visitors are welcome on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Entry is FREE for students and adults only have to pay $2.00.
