Happy International Women's Day!

International Women's Day is celebrated annually on 8 March. This year's theme is #EachforEqual

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific. #IWD2020 #EachforEqual

Balmain Public School abounds with many amazing women, of all ages, who, in their own ways, make (and have made) an active difference on a daily basis - this includes present and previous students, staff and our community members!

For those of you who have recently joined the Balmain Public School community, I'd like to pay homage to our own beloved 'Environmental Warrior', Miss Pauline (Dr Pauline Jensen), who sadly lost her life after a short illness late last year. Miss Pauline was our Learning and Support teacher for just over 10 years and worked tirelessly to make a difference in the learning of many of our students, especially our Indigenous students.

Pauline was also actively involved in ensuring BPS is a sustainable school - with recycling, reducing and reusing, as well as worm composting, very high on her agenda. She worked with students to plant and nurture the growth of many herbs, sold to our community, with funds raised going back into the garden. The bottles of 'worm juice' were always in high demand!

We continue to honour Miss Pauline and her quest for empowered students and a sustainable, environmentally conscious school - Miss Reedy led last week's 'Clean up Balmain Day' https://www.instagram.com/p/B9GWPPAHL1N/ - the garden is affectionately known as 'Miss Pauline's Garden' - Mrs Felicity Bowman, our Visual Arts teacher, and Ms Kate Tamplin, our STEAM specialist, have introduced a Gardening Club https://www.instagram.com/p/B9DPfQcHwfP/. Watch this environmental space!

On this special day of celebrating extraordinary women, I'd like to take the opportunity to congratulate Ms Shehana Darda-Teixeira, mum of Sunny in KG and Luca in 5/4M, who was unanimously voted in as our P&C President - the first female in the role during my 6 years at BPS, and I believe for quite a while before that, too! For those of you who were at the P&C meeting on Wednesday, Shehana presented a Climate & Sustainability 'Helping Balmain Public School become a more sustainable school' Report, with the goal '...that by 2025 Balmain Primary School becomes the most sustainable school in the Inner West with a plan led by students and the community with support from staff.'

It's wonderful to see that Miss Pauline's legacy will continue to thrive and extend into the future, passionately supported by Shehana, the P&C and combined school community!

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Keeping our kids safe...

Updated information about COVID-19 (formerly referred to Novel Coronavirus)

From the Department of Education:

Dear parent or caregiver

The NSW Department of Education is working closely with the NSW Ministry of Health in response to the unfolding international COVID-19 (formerly referred to as Novel Coronavirus) situation.

Further travel restrictions

Effective of 5 March 2020, the Federal Government has issued updated advice on travel restrictions on foreign nationals (excluding permanent residents of Australia) coming to Australia from the Republic of Korea (South Korea).

Current advice from the NSW Government for parents and affected staff is:

  • Any student or staff member who has left, or transited through mainland China since 1 February, Iran since 1 March or the Republic of Korea (South Korea) since 5 March, is excluded from child care services, school or work for 14 days from the date they left mainland China, Iran or the Republic of Korea (South Korea).
  • Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return.
  • Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed case.

Students and staff who have returned to Australia and have shown no symptoms during the 14-day self-isolation period are able to return to child care services, school or work.

The NSW Ministry of Health has processes to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the NSW Ministry of Health.

Consistent with current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with the NSW Department of Education’s current practice, if any student becomes unwell, the school will implement infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropriate.

Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading respiratory infections. Parents and caregivers are asked to promote good hygiene, including handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.

The NSW Ministry of Health has advice and resources about COVID-19 in EnglishChinese and other languages

The NSW Department of Education will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation and provide parents and caregivers with updated information about the virus.

If you need an interpreter to assist you with your enquiry please call the Telephone Interpreter Service on 131 450 and ask for an interpreter in your language. HUGE THANKS & CONGRATS!

I would like to personally thank the 2019 P&C Executive - Justin Dunwoody (President), Alma Dayawon (Vice President) and Alvin Lau (Treasurer) - for their support and dedication to making a difference in our students' learning and our school. Your valuable time and input has been much appreciated! I have truly enjoyed working with you!

A warm and hearty congratulations to our incoming P&C Exec - Shehana Darda-Teixeira (President), Cliff Philipiah (Vice President), Victoria Lush (Vice President/Secretary) and Alvin Lau (Treasurer). I look forward to working together with the P&C executive team and beyond, supporting our fabulous kids and school!

FROM YOUR P&C

From our new P&C President...

Hi,

On Wednesday, we thanked the 2019 P&C Committee - President Justin Dunwoody, Vice President Alma Dayawon and Treasurer Alvin Lau – for all the incredible work they did and then voted on a new Committee for 2020.

President - Shehana Darda-Teixeira

I’m Shehana, the President. For those who don’t know me, my husband Micky and I are parents to Luca in year 5 (5/4M) and Sunny in Kindergarten (KG). We also have a son in year 11.  When we joined the school five years ago, we were drawn to Balmain’s sense of community and place and that’s what I want to focus on building up this year as well as communication and transparency.

Vice President - Cliff Philipiah

Our Vice President is Cliff Philipiah – “Hi everyone, many of you may recognise me as a regular at the school BBQ’s and the Kids’ Discos. I’ve been a parent at BPS for over 9 years with a daughter in Yr 5 and an older one in Yr 8. From the very beginning, I’ve been involved with the P&C and the Balmain Fun Run Committee. My focus has always been about our school community. I will always strive to make it the best experience for all of our kids and fellow parents/carers as possible – while supporting Mrs Lambos & our staff as needed.”

Vice President & Secretary - Victoria Lush

Our other Vice President and Secretary is Victoria Lush – “Hi! My son Harry Marlow is in 5/4 M and has been at BPS since kindergarten. For the past couple of years, I’ve been staff liaison and the VP at Eaton St Centre and have really enjoyed being part of that team. I am now excited to join the P&C Exec team and work with the teachers to help continue to build a vibrant and inviting school community.”

Treasurer - Alvin Lau

Our Treasurer again (thankfully!) this year is Alvin Lau – “hi, my son Tristan Lau is in 1/2 BP, and my wife is Jen Hsieh who some of you would have met at the Cake Stall.  We are part of the newer parent cohort - this is our 3rd year at BPS. Since joining school from day care, I’ve admired the parents who volunteer their time for the benefit of the wider community. I've learnt not to take anything for granted - without our volunteers at Eaton Street and BPS, many things just don't happen.  I'm not on the school grounds much so if you have any questions about P&C finances, feel free to contact me or come see us at P&C meeting.”

We’ve got some big plans for 2020 including the implementation of an exciting and ambitious climate and sustainability strategy and we need to make a decision about the future of our school’s main fundraiser, the Balmain Fun Run. It’s going to be a transformative year and we want to make sure that you are part of it all.

Starting this week, you’ll get regular updates from us about equipment and other investments we’re making, events and initiatives including financial decisions to support the work of our wonderful teachers in educating our children. We’ll also keep you up to date about volunteering opportunities – the success of our school and therefore our children’s experience of their primary school years is significantly improved by more parents getting involved.

I work full time and have 3 children and a dog - I know it’s not easy to put your hand up when there’s so much else going on. I want to find ways to make it easier for more parents to participate such as introducing zoom conferencing opportunities to make it easier for people to take part in our meetings. I’m really excited about what’s in store and look forward to working with you all!

If you have any questions about the P&C, please email us at balmainpspc@gmail.com

See you on the playground!

Shehana Darda-Teixeira

School Uniforms

Our regular opening hours are 8:15 - 9am on Friday mornings during school terms, on the middle floor of the main building - enter from Ms Pauline's Garden stairs.

Please bring donations to the uniform stall on Friday mornings, or leave in the labelled box near the office.

What a day!

Our team demonstrated such high levels of professionalism and sportsmanship at the Zone swimming carnival.

It was so exciting to see each student absolutely thrive in their element. Despite the heavy down pour, we had a fun day, filled with high levels of effort, focus and enthusiasm.

Special congratulations to Ben S, Olivia S, Henry S, Elise G and Mila F, who qualified for the next stage!

Huge THANKS to Ms Ferguson and Mr Carlton for organising and Ms Ally for also assisting on the day!

5/6 Frangipani – “step into our garden of learning”

We have had a wonderful start to the year and are now settled into our new classroom! The International Year of Plant Health has seen us explore multiple units of work that are linked to the themes of plant health and sustainability. Our first written piece is a persuasive text that answers the question, “Should we protect our environment?” We have used the PEEL structure and high modality language to shape and build our written pieces.

In maths, we have been enjoying our weekly investigations that encourage us to apply the skills that we have been explicitly taught into a new context.

Clean up Australia Day was a great initiative for our school. We had a great time cleaning up our school grounds, making it cleaner for all of us! Thank you for taking the time to read about just some of things that we have been up to in 5/6 F!
