Term 4 week 4 - Wednesday 9 November

From the Principal - Stephen Jolley

School Improvement Planning

During this term staff are spending time reviewing the school improvement plan with a view to maintaining our focus on Reading and Mathematics. Whilst there will not be any large scale changes to what has already been documented in the 3 year plan, some refinements will occur, including revising existing targets. An action that we will take forward into 2023 is maintaining a strong focus on teacher collaboration. The work that happens in this space filters through many areas of student learning; curriculum planning, sharing of resources, assessment and moderation. By planning together, teachers ensure consistency of learning for students, regardless of their class, and in 2023 staff will continue to build upon this area, with a focus on English and Mathematics. The school is committed to all students achieving growth in these areas of learning and maintaining the already existing positive levels of academic achievement.

Canteen

This Friday is Julie’s final day in the canteen prior to commencing her retirement. On behalf of the school community I would like to thank Julie for her commitment and effort in managing the canteen and wish her all the best for the future. From next week our canteen will be co-managed by Nicole Seekamp and Mel Longmire. Both Nicole and Mel are excited about the opportunity to work with the school community to ensure a high quality service for our students and families.

Public Education Forum

This term the SA Government is hosting a state wide conversation about the purpose of public education. An important part of this process is student consultation and on Tuesday, two of our year 5 students, Josh and Sophia, attended a conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre. On the day they discussed topics such as student wellbeing, curriculum and opportunities after school. This was a great opportunity for Josh and Sophia who represented the school in a fine manner. Information from the consultation process will be shared in 2023.

Congratulations to Mr Luke Springer

Earlier this year one of our Reception teachers, Luke Springer, was invited to collaborate with the ABC to read a story for Play School. Luke read the story ‘You Are’ by Mem Fox and can be viewed on ABC TV and Iview on the following link: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/play-school-story-time/series/5/video/CK2109H009S00

2023 School Sport

Each year students have the opportunity to participate in a range of sports events, including Out of Hours Sports and Knockout Sport. Details regarding each of these is provided below.

·        Out of Hours Sports

These sports are played outside of regular school times and teams are coached by parent volunteers who play a fantastic role in supporting student participation. In 2023 the school will be looking to nominate teams in the following sports:

Sport

When Played

Terms

Basketball

Matches are scheduled on a day after school.

1 - 4

Football

Saturday mornings

2 & 3

Soccer

Saturday mornings

2 & 3

Netball

Matches are scheduled on a day after school.

If you would like to nominate your child to participate in any of these sports please do so when the nomination form is made available on Skoolbag in the coming weeks. Please be aware each sport has a participation cost that ranges from $80-$120 per sport. Out of Hours Sports relies on the help of parent volunteers; we cannot nominate teams without a coach or team manager and each sport also requires a coordinator to help with overall communication for families involved. Nominations for these roles will also be called for later in the term.

·        Statewide Schools Knockout Sport

Knockout sport involves the school entering a team (yrs 5-6 students) to compete against other schools in a variety of sports. These competitions are played during school time and we are looking to expand our involvement in this area for 2023. Currently teams participate in knock out competitions in Netball, Basketball, Football and Softball. In 2023, depending on student interest, we will also be looking to nominate teams in Cricket and Soccer.

If you are interested in volunteering to coach a knockout sports team please complete the nomination form located on Skoolbag  under eforms. Whilst there is no expectation for trainings to be held for these sports, this can be negotiated depending on your availability. Player nominations will be arranged next year prior to each competition being scheduled.

 2023 Class Planning.

Tomorrow we are looking forward to hosting the first of 3 visits for our intake of 2023 receptions. From approximately 9.15am these children and their families will be on site and following their arrival, the new students will go with our staff to take part in a variety of activities to help familiarise themselves with our school environment. During this time an information session will be held for families in the gym.

In regards to other year levels, on Monday 12 December a transition lesson will be scheduled whereby students in yr 1-6 will have the opportunity to meet their class teacher and peers for 2023. For students attending Henley High School next year, please be aware that a transition day has been planned for Friday 9 December. The high school has indicated that further information and consent forms will be emailed to families in the coming weeks.

Materials and Services Fee and 2023 Rebate

As a part of establishing the 2023 Materials and Services Fee a poll is being undertaken by the school. This year the poll is being conducted electronically and families should receive an email on Thursday with information about this. The poll is open until Thursday 24 November.

Further to the above information, similar to this year, families who are required to pay the 2023 materials and services charge are eligible for a $100 rebate (discount). Students approved for School Card assistance aren’t eligible to receive the discount as they’re already exempt from paying the materials and services charge. Information on how to claim the rebate will be shared with the community in the future.

Henley Beach Primary School Volunteer Award

Each year our school benefits greatly from volunteer assistance and as a way of recognising someone who has made a significant contribution in their support of students, class activities and school events, an annual award is presented. If you would like to nominate a volunteer for this award please do so in writing by Friday 11 November. In your nomination please include the following information:

·        Your name and the name of the volunteer being nominated.

·        A brief summary why this person is being nominated (1-2 paragraphs).

Term 4 Swimming Lessons

A reminder that the swimming lessons for Reception to Yr 5 students will occur in week 7 this term, Monday 22 - Friday 26  November. Please contact the front office or your child’s class teacher if further information is required.

Instrumental Music 2023

The Department for Education will provide free tuition at our school in the following:

Year 3-6 Students -  string (violin, viola and cello)

Year 5-6 Students - woodwind (clarinet, flute and saxophone)

                                        - brass (trumpet and trombone)

Parents pay for instrument hire/purchase and for tutor books.

Please watch out for the expression of interest for 2023 in the coming weeks if you would like to learn an instrument next year.

House Cup - PE Renee Hanna

This term we have started an exciting initiative in PE. We are running a House Cup.  Our 4 school houses, Herons, Sandpipers, Seagulls and Pelicans will be competing across the term to win the House Cup. In PE students will be rewarded for Excellence- I will be looking for students showing excellence in teamwork, persistence, risk taking, honesty, being good sports, hard work and skill development.  This will be an opportunity for all students to shine in PE as the criteria are not based on skill but on game ethics and physical improvement.  At the end of this term a perpetual trophy will be awarded to the winning house.  I look forward to seeing our students continue to strive to be the best they can in these areas.

Remembrance Day Assembly 2022

On Friday we will be acknowledging Remembrance Day with a whole school service. Our senior students will be leading the ceremony and we look forward to this important service. Parents and carers are welcome to join us which will begin at approximately 10.45am on the Metcalfe Lawn (pending weather conditions).

The Henley Beach Giving Tree - St Vincent de Paul charity

This year we are proudly supporting St Vinnies by collecting a gift for children who would otherwise not have a present to unwrap on Christmas day. We are also collecting tins, jars, supermarket vouchers or gift cards to put towards a Christmas hamper. These collections will be donated to St Vincent de Paul for less fortunate families this Christmas.

Please do not wrap the gift, just put a tag on the item to identify gender and age.

Tags can be found on the tree in the office from Monday 14 November and the gift is to be placed in the box next to the tree (located in the front office).

Hamper items can also be placed in the box in the front office.

Collection closes Tuesday 6 December.

Year 1 - Miss Tash - Botantic Garden Excursion

Earlier this term the Year 1s went to the Botanic Gardens to participate in an Education Trail with a focus on Aboriginal plant use. During the trail we learnt so much about different plants and their specific use. A few favourites were:

- Bottle Tree (shaped like a bottle) which was used to store water during droughts

- Parapara plant which was used in North Queensland by Aboriginal hunters as the leaves were sticky enough to trap birds

Thank you to all the parents who helped out on the day.

Year 3 Tracey Burner

After Italian Day children wrote in their diaries to create lasting memories to look back on once they have left primary school. We hope you enjoy them.

New CANTEEN Co-Managers- Nicole Seekamp & Mel Longmire

Hello Henley Beach Primary School Families,

Firstly, we would like to introduce ourselves – your new Canteen Co-Managers.

My name is Nicole Seekamp and I have been involved with HBPS since 2014 as a parent of 2 children (1 child is currently at HBPS).  I started out in Canteen as a regular volunteer and have been doing most of the cooking for the past 2 years. I’m passionate about our fresh food options for the kids and enjoy cooking while creating a positive and enjoyable environment in the canteen for volunteers.

My name is Melissa Longmire and I have been part of the Henley community for 9 years.  I’m a mum of 4, with 3 children currently at HBPS. I’ve been a regular canteen volunteer for over 2 years, have worked to cover staff shortages over the past year, and am now looking forward to implementing some new ideas to make our canteen even better.

Our focus is on providing the children with a large range of home-cooked fresh food options. Did you know we make most of the current menu items, including chicken nuggets, butter chicken, pasta bolognese, macaroni cheese, smoothies, ice blocks (Slams) and cookies all from scratch?

We would love you to volunteer and join us. Any time would be greatly appreciated, and we’ll make sure you enjoy getting to know us and experiencing what we do.

We are looking forward to our American Food themed special in Week 6; with hot dogs, cheeseburgers, nachos, and milkshakes and some regular menu items to ensure that all tastes are catered for.

We really value your feedback and are happy to answer your questions. You can email us at Canteen.canteen878@schools.sa.edu.au or pop in to Canteen to say hello.
