Newsletter Term 4 Week 5

From the Deputy

We would like to welcome Taylor Brinkley to our school. Taylor is our new pastoral care worker who started with us in week 4. She is really excited about getting to know our students and the community and to look at ways to support student wellbeing. Taylor will be working Tuesdays and Wednesdays for this term. If you see her in the yard, please make her feel welcome. Taylor will spend the next few weeks in classrooms, getting to know students and teachers.

As we get closer to the end of the year, we look at farewelling this year’s graduating cohort. Graduation letters have been sent out to the parents and guardians of our year 7 students. Graduation will be held on Thursday 10 December 2020 at 6:00pm. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no supper this year. We also require all parents and guardians to be specific with how many people are attending the evening on the graduation note which has already been sent home.

On Thursday 29 October 2020 we were able to hold our sports day. Although the forecast did not look overly flattering, we decided to run the program as scheduled. Even with overcast conditions and the odd spot of rain, the students had an amazing time representing their sports day houses. The students were well behaved and even had to compete against their teachers in some of the events. Well done to Yertamalyo who were champions this year. Great job to Karka who won the spirit cup. Special thanks to Elle Villano for planning the amazing day, along with all staff and students on showing great sportsmanship.

After year 6/7 aquatics was cancelled earlier this year, we were lucky enough for students to attend the Port Noarlunga Aquatic Centre on Tuesday 27 October 2020. The students were involved in activities such as surfing, stand up paddle boarding and kayaking.  All of our students had a great time learning new skills and demonstrating water safety.

We would also like to remind the community that we have a pupil free day on Monday 16 November 2020. Staff will be focusing on our site improvement plan during this day.

Stacey Riedel, our Aboriginal Education Teacher planned some great activities for classes to come and participate in during the week. These activities included:

  • puzzles
  • stories
  • dot painting
  • Indigenous games
  • story stones
  • nature painting.

Ms Riedel also went into classes and taught the students the acknowledgement of country in Kaurna language.

Room 11

In room 11, students have been learning about the sun.  Some students would like to share some facts with you.

Drew: The sun is one of the millions of stars in the solar system. The surface of the sun is called the photosphere.

Josh: The sun is a part of our solar system. The sun is a dwarf star. It is a hot ball of glowing gases.

Elivia: The sun is the biggest thing in the whole solar system.

Carlos: The sun keeps our plants warm enough for living things to thrive.

Mitch: The sun is made up of hydrogen. The sun is a star.

Kai: The sun is a star that is made up of hydrogen and helium.

Also in room 11 we have been making sundials.  This is one of the sundials we have made using paper and a pencil. The sun causes a shadow from the pencil and tells us what the time is.

We actually had to wait for the sun to come out when we made them as there were quite a few clouds around!  It was a lot of fun!

Here is a picture of the type of sundial we made
