Visits by Pre-schoolers

It has been very special to have our 2023 kindergarten students visit the school this week. Thank you to every family that is supporting their child's transition to school in this way. (see photos)

Halloween Disco

The Halloween disco tonight is for students who attend Drummoyne Public School only.

The school will refund the cost of tickets for anyone from another school who has purchased tickets.

Siblings of children attending the discos are asked not to attend the disco of their brother or sister unless both children are in the infants or both children are in the primary classes ie the infant's disco is for children in K-2 classes and the primary is for children in 3-6 classes. 

Parents are asked to sign their children in and leave the disco.  Even so, parents of infants children may wish to stay until their children are settled. 

Parents are asked to be punctual in picking up children at the end of the discos.  This will be done with parents being invited to come into the hall for pick-up.  Please don't ask for your child to come to meet you at another meeting place.

In the interests of safety, children are asked not to bring props (swords, weapons etc), or toys as part of their Halloween costume.

Formation of Classes for 2023

Over the next few weeks a process for the placement of students into tentative classes for next year will take place involving executive, teachers and specialist staff.

This is designed to ensure a smooth transition for all students and support student learning. The aims of this process are:

  • To provide each child with the opportunity to be part of a class of children that will allow them the best opportunity to learn.
  • To form well balanced classes of children that take into account the social, emotional, academic and physical characteristics of each child.
  • To ensure that optimum use is made of the knowledge that teachers have of each child before and after class placement. This will be supported through ‘handover’ meetings between current and new teachers at the start of the new year.

Other aspects of the class formation process include the following:

  • Firstly, determining the number of classes for next year, class sizes and the year levels of each class based on anticipated student enrolments. This may include ‘across stage’ classes to cater for variations in year cohorts.
  • Consideration will be given to gender balance, the previous class, each child’s ability, language background, student behaviour and friendship groups. The opportunity for social development through accessing a wide number of students is considered important by the school. The individual learning needs of each child, including students with special needs, will be carefully considered.
  • Parallel or socially grouped classes will seek to have an equal balance of capable and less capable students. This will be based primarily on the academic ability of a student as indicated by class and grade assessments.
  • Numbers in early childhood classes will seek to reflect the State government’s class size reduction program.
  • Details relating to the school organisation, classes of children, and the teachers allocated to classes will be provided to parents on the first day of term 1.
  • As the class structure may need to change depending on student enrolments over the holiday period, the school will not be in a position to share the composition of proposed classes prior to the start of the new year.

At this stage, given demographic movement of families in and out of Drummoyne, students may need to go into 2022 classes for 2 weeks at the start of next year.

School Colour Fun Run

Our P&C have organised a School Colour Fun Run to raise funds for technology at DPS.The event will take place during the day on Friday 25th November at Taplin Park.The fun run replaces the Activitython of previous years. Information on sponsorship is being sent home today with further information to come closer to the event.

It's Never Too Late to be Punctual

Does your family start the day with repeated orders and pleading to various members to get up, get dressed, have their breakfast, pack their school bag, brush their teeth, catch the bus. 

Some children are always late to school, to classes, with assignments and the chaos of their lives influences their ability to learn. A calm, well organised start to the day and successful time management help develop the habits that lead to good learning. Effective time management leads to greater contentment. 

Satisfaction with how we use our time is an important predictor of happiness. Time is the basis on which we operate our lives and if we’re happy with the way we manage time, we’re happy with our life. Being late is a way of life for many people. But good timekeeping can be learnt. For some, lateness is the only way they can get anything done. They have convinced themselves that racing to the deadline is the way they work best and leave everything to the last minute to get that adrenaline rush that charges them up to get the job done. They usually never count the cost of the worry, feelings of panic and lying awake at night as the deadline looms and they haven’t yet started. 

How can you change these habits? Help the unpunctual members of your family take responsibility for their own lateness. It pays to begin when they are young but it’s never too late to start.

  • Set alarms, establish routines like who is first to use the bathroom, have breakfast ready and expect them to be out the door on time. One unpunctual member of the family can raise the stress levels for everyone.
  • Try “To Do” lists and learn to enjoy ticking off each task as they get it done.
  • Keep a detailed calendar.
  • If necessary, set your watch and clocks five minutes early.
  • Use your technology (computer or phone) to send you reminders. Students can:
  • Plan assignments with progress dates so they easily meet the deadline. 
  • Aim to hand in work the day before it is due.

Class of the Week - 5H

In Geography, students in class 5H have been studying the countries of Asia. They have made a series of traditional masks which are significant to these cultures, documenting their rituals, beliefs, histories and ways of life.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures continuing in Term 4

As we move into the warmer months, NSW Health has advised that despite the steady decline in COVID-19 cases in the community there is a continued risk of new COVID-19 waves of transmission into summer. The department is continuing with the following baseline COVID-smart measures throughout Term 4:

  • Students, staff and families are to stay home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms. RATs are available through contacting the school.
  • Students, staff and visitors to the school are encouraged to wear masks.
  • Wearing of masks on buses and transport to and from camps and excursions is strongly encouraged.
  • Staff and students are encouraged to maintain up to date vaccinations, including COVID-19 booster shots for anyone eligible.

Non-COVID school based vaccinations

Due to the ongoing pandemic and stay-at-home orders that were in place over the previous two years, NSW Health has noted that some children and young people have missed out on the non-COVID school-based vaccination programs that they would have taken part in. Parents and carers are reminded to make sure that all of their child’s vaccinations are up-to-date, including other, non-COVID vaccinations.
If unsure about whether their child has missed any vaccinations, parents and carers should speak to their GP or go to NSW Health’s Immunisation requirements in primary and secondary schools.
Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing  symptoms of COVID-19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses that require treatment and management by a doctor.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Kakadu Concert

After 2 years and 3 extra weeks (due to the Queen's Memorial Public Holiday) Drummoyne PS Stage 2 Choir finally got back to the Sydney Town Hall last night together with 500 other students to perform 11 songs to a full house!

Students have been preparing for this performance since February and were so very proud to share and celebrate their passion for singing. I have been lucky to be a part of these concerts for most of my teaching career, and it is always a highlight of my year to watch and listen to the mass choir in such a magnificent venue.

To the students - congratulations! I hope you feel proud of the effort and dedication you have shown.

To our parents, thank you for your support getting your child to school for the 8.30am rehearsal every Wednesday and hopefully listening to those songs on repeat at home for the last 6 months or so.

Thank you to Ms Ashlee Ward for accompanying us for the day and to Mr Dill and Mr Sutton for cheering us on from the audience.

Student recount - Performing with the Art's Unit Symphonic Wind Orchestra

Over the past two weeks, I have been a member of the Festival Orchestra which has been accompanying the Combined Children's Choir at the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Town Hall. The choir is made up of students from public schools across NSW, including Drummoyne Public School.

I am a member of the Department of Education NSW Arts Unit string Sinfonia and the Symphonic Wind orchestra. These were combined to create the Festival Orchestra.

The highlight of this experience has been the opportunity to perform at the Opera House. The acoustics in the Concert Hall were amazing with the sound evenly spread around.. The sound of 400 singers echoed around the hall. There were thousands  of people in the audience and it was slightly nerve racking. 

I have had an amazing time performing over four nights and I will always remember it.

Selective high school placement process for placement in Year 7 in 2024

Applications for Year 7 entry to selective high schools in 2024 opened on 18 October 2022. Applications will close on 16 November 2022. The due date is strictly observed. Requests for late applications will be approved only under very specific and well-documented circumstances.

All candidates are required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test to be held on Thursday 4 May 2023. The online application dashboard enables parents to log in to make updates and add attachments even after an application is submitted.

Parents also communicate directly with the Selective Education Unit through the system’s messages feature. Parents having difficulty completing or submitting an application, should contact the Selective Education Unit through their application dashboard or, if unable to do so, by email ssu@det.nsw.edu.au.

Year 4 Camp - student recounts

This week, Year 4 went on an overnight camp to Stanwell Tops. Even though it was raining when we got there we quickly settled into the big hall, had morning tea, then had our cabins assigned. We got ready and went to the first camp activity which was my favourite. My group went to the big swing called Goliath, roughly 27 metres high. I swung from the highest level. After the swing, we went to our cabins to get into warm clothes, because it was raining and we were drenched. 

Our teachers collected us to have lunch. We had hamburgers. In the afternoon we played indoor volleyball, as the outdoor activity was cancelled due to the rain. For dinner we had yummy butter chicken and ice cream for dessert before doing an awesome cup stacking challenge!

On Tuesday morning Mr Dill came into our rooms for an inspection to check if our rooms were neat & tidy. My cabin didn’t win :( 

The sun came out and we did archery. In teams we had a competition. This time we did win and my friend hit the bullseye!

Before we knew it, we were on the bus riding home. I already can’t wait for next year's camp.

I woke up in the morning, got out of bed and said to myself , “Whoo it's time for camp.” My suitcase was full to the brim. I wanted to go as early as possible. I didn’t want the bus to leave without me. 

When we got to school I was a bit nervous to leave my family, but I knew I was going to be okay. When we were on the bus everyone was singing Christmas songs. The bus ride was one and a half hours.

The first activity that Sarah and I did was archery. It was raining but luckily we were under cover(other people weren’t so lucky).The Bows were made of metal so they were a bit heavy.

When we got back to the meeting room everyone was cold,tired and wet so we didn’t do the second activity, but instead we played board games, card games and nine square volleyball (inside).

Then at about 6:00 o’clock we had dinner.For dinner we had butter chicken,rice and veggies then our favorite bit, dessert. I had ice-cream and Sarah had dairy free ice-cream. 

After dinner, we played speed stacks. At 9:30 we went to bed.

”Ahh” the second day we had eggs,bacon and toast. I know...luxury! Our first activity on the second day was the giant swing. Sarah was the first person to do it. She went higher,higher and higher, and ”Swoosh,”Sarah flew through the air “Weee,” Sarah said. After a few people it was my go. It was so much fun. I pulled the green rope and said “Woo hoo’”. I wasn’t a fan. 

Then we packed our bags and got on the bus to go home.When school was just around the corner everyone chanting “DPS, DPS, DPS.” 

Then, finally we were home. Sarah and I are so excited for the next camp.

Following the trial AFL lessons last week, Auskick will be running 4 after school sessions on Fridays starting on 4th November – 25th November from 3:25pm – 4:25pm in the school playground.

You can choose to enrol your child in the after school program for a cost of $50.

2023 school travel applications are now open

Applications for student travel in 2023 open from Monday 10 October 2022. Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023 can apply now.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

    Visitors and contractors can now check-in using two convenient methods: scanning our existing school QR code with a phone or through the new concierge device at front reception. 

    Parents are asked to sign in when you enter the school grounds to attend an assembly or meeting with teachers and the like.

    2023 Kindergarten Transition

    The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for parents to submit an enrolment application online and at the time that best suits you.

    The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including iOS and Android. The online application process is currently restricted to:

    • Enrolments into local schools
    • Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
    • Children who live in NSW.

    We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If, however, you do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection from the front office or can be downloaded from the Department’s 
    Going to a Public School site.

    New Online Consent Forms

    Consent forms for school activities are sent via SchoolBytes email. Please check your junk/spam folder to ensure you are receiving all school communication. Consent forms are sent from the email address 'noreply@mail.schoolbytes.education' and the sender appears as Drummoyne Public School.

    You do not require a login to access SchoolBytes. All consent forms will be emailed to you with a link to provide consent for an activity and make payment (where applicable).

    In order for this system to continue to work well, we ask parents to please sign any outstanding forms and if there are any fees due, please click the link to make payment at that time.

    If you have not received any notes, please contact the office ASAP so we can check that your email address is up to date in our system.

    Lost property – Please label everything!

    Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.

    Use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels. Also please go through your child’s bag with them regularly and check that labels haven’t faded with washing.

    Parents may now come on site to check for any lost items at drop off or pick up time.
