Principals Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to Term 4, I hope you had a wonderful holiday and are ready to start another busy term.  Over the holidays work continued on our outdoor areas. The rotunda overlooking the oval is nearing completion; only the landscaping remains. The reflection area at the hall entrance is starting to take shape with garden beds, seats and new flagpoles installed. These areas are due to be finished in a couple of weeks.

Summer uniform/hats compulsory: It is now compulsory for all children to wear a broad brimmed hat when outdoors during school activities. Please ensure your child has their own clearly named school hat at all times, children without hats will play in shaded areas.

SOCKTOBER is our Social Justice focus for October. Socktober is an initiative of Catholic Mission and one way in which our school builds awareness of the needs of others, fundraises and engages in supporting Catholic Mission during World Mission Month in October.

Classes will be collecting loose change over the month of October and, on 17th October we will have a Crazy Sock Day (gold coin donation).

Marching: During October, we will be practising in preparation for our annual House Marching Competition held on Grandparents’ Day, 4th November. Coordination and timing are key, so be prepared for a lot of ‘left, right, left’.

Canteen: Icy Poles (Zooper Dooper, Juicy & Lemonade) will be available over the counter for the first half of lunchtime commencing Monday 10 October. Price is 50 cents each, all other snacks must be ordered via lunch orders.

Lost Property: There are currently a large amount of jumpers/bomber jackets (in excess of 30) unnamed in lost property. It is important to name clothing, jumpers and hats especially, this allows us to return items to their rightful owners. If you are missing jumpers or hats please come to the office and have a look through for your child's items.

Student Absences: A reminder that parent notification of student absences should be submitted via PAM prior to 9am on the day of absence.

Operoo Permissions - Some important reminders in regard to Operoo requests/excursion permissions:

  • A reminder that permission requests via Operoo must be actioned promptly to avoid unnecessary followup or your child missing out on an event - as a rule these are usually required to be actioned within a week.

  • It is important to read the information provided in the Operoo form, note dates your child will be on excursion and details such as uniform to be worn, times etc. You can revisit excursion information in Operoo at any time.

  • Please ensure your signature is legible - there is an option to clear and redo a parents signature if necessary.

  • Operoo is also used to provide information to parents and have this information acknowledged to ensure everyone is aware of correct procedures ie. for absence reporting and holiday submissions.

District Interschool Summer Sports: This event has been rescheduled due to Friday's inclement weather forecast, unfortunately St Johns is not available to participate on the new date.

Whole School Production: Madagascar Jr:

The whole school musical is fast approaching, information packs were sent to all families this week which included ticket information, costume details and arrangements for student drop off & pick up from production. Please read all of this information carefully. Tickets go on sale at 10am, Friday 7 October - please note ticket purchase limits per family. Link will be provided via Operoo tomorrow.

Regards

Chris Dortmans, Principal

Junior News

It is hard to believe we are already in Term 4 of 2022! We hope you and your family have been able to have some relaxing time together over the holidays and are ready for what is going to be a very busy, but very fun last term. The whole school is preparing for the upcoming school musical ‘Madagascar Jr’,  one of the ways junior students have been preparing is by starting a film study in Literacy linked to the movie. Students will build up their knowledge of the history and geography of the real island of Madagascar before delving into watching the movie and unpacking its features.

In Maths 2 digit place value remains the focus of our junior grades, alongside the applied maths topic of Location and Transformation. Students will be describing the position and movement of objects whilst learning to give and follow directions.

In Science Inquiry, Foundation students are beginning to unpack their knowledge of living and nonliving things. The Grade 1/2 students begin their Earth and Space Science Unit by looking at the features of day and night.

Finally, a new Religion Inquiry topic has begun where students will be engaging in the topic ‘How can I make the world a better place for everyone?’

Middle/Senior News

Welcome back to another Term! In the classroom we will begin a Film Study based on the movie Madagascar. This fits in perfectly with our upcoming whole school musical and also our Inquiry work in Science which focuses on Habitats this term. In Maths we are working on fractions and decimals and will continue our Place value groups on a Friday throughout the remainder of the year. Our focus in Religion is around Social Justice - stay tuned for information about ‘Socktober’!
