Principal's Column

Hello, Giinagay, Hai

Full Time Face-to-Face Learning
We were so happy to see so many smiling faces coming back through the gate. Our amazing staff are supporting children who may be finding it more challenging returning to school. We have many strategies we can employ to support them and ensure they are able to settle back into our regular school routine. If you need any support to get your child back to school, please contact us.

Student Attendance
All students are expected to return to full time attendance. We will be following up any absences daily (if we have not been contacted) to offer support. Only students who have a medical certificate to stay at home will be supported to learn from home in line with regular school procedures. If your child is unwell, please do not send them to school. If they become unwell at school, you or your nominated emergency contact will be contacted to collect them immediately. Please make sure these details are up to date.

If a student is absent without a medical reason for more than three days, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and followed up.

School Uniforms
As students have been returning to school and the weather is getting colder we have observed children have not been wearing full school uniform.  Items such as jumpers that are not the school colour, hoodies and tights are not permitted. It is important students show they are a part of the Scotts Head team by wearing the full school uniform. We do have high expectations and would ask you please ensure your child is wearing their full school uniform when they leave in the morning. The current uniform policy is included in this newsletter.

Sleep
Some students may have developed poor sleeping patterns due to disrupted schedules and routines whilst learning from home. They may seem more irritable, tired, and have trouble with concentration, day dreaming, and getting back into the routine of school. Often sleep issues are a symptom of another problem, such as too much screen time before bed, or sleep routines being disrupted. Remind your children that going to sleep early and establishing a routine will help them to maintain a healthy headspace and to engage in both school and the other things they enjoy doing.

Canteen
The canteen will continue to be closed until further notice.

Parents
We would like to say a big thank you to our parents for remaining outside the school gates unless you need to come to the office. We understand this is not easy for everyone, particularly for our parents with younger students. While the advice is children do not need to social distance, it is the adults and their safety we also must consider.

Reconciliation Week
Each day at Scotts Head we focus on Reconciliation. We are very fortunate to have Ricky Buchanan in our school two days a week to share culture and stories. This “is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.”

It is a time to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and focus on moving forward as a nation through the development of respectful relationships. All our students are engaged with activities in their classrooms to support this journey in line with the theme of Reconciliation that we are all “in this together”.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness allows us to be aware of our thoughts, emotions and sensations without being resistant to them. Check out Smiling Mind – Classroom Meditations (website or app) or ReachOut.com.au for mindfulness strategies and resources.  See module below for more information and the link.

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

SHPS Uniform Policy

The school uniform is compulsory at Scotts Head Public School.

RATIONALE

The wearing of a school uniform, in accordance with the uniform dress code, assists students in recognising themselves as an integral part of the school community. It also helps reinforce pride in their appearance and in representing the school.

In the establishment of this Dress Code issues such as expense, health and safety and equality have been considered.

AIMS

Promote equality amongst all students.

Further development of a sense of pride in our school.

Identification with our school.

Provide durable clothing that is both cost effective and practical for our school environment.

Maintain and advance the positive image of the school in the community.

DRESS CODE

The school uniform is compulsory at Scotts Head Public School.  The school uniform consists of the following garments:

  • SHPS Hat
  • SHPS Jacket
  • SHPS Blue Short Sleeve Polo

Black shorts/pants. Other options can be black skirt/shorts/skorts. Bike pants need to be mid-thigh length.

School uniform items that match our school colours can be purchased elsewhere as long as they have no other logo, writing or decoration on them.  All shirts must carry the school logo.

FOOTWEAR

The Dress Code requires all students to wear suitable, safe closed in footwear, which allows them to participate in the full range of school activities.  These include runners (sports shoes) and enclosed toe sandals.  Thongs, crocs and slip on party type shoes are not permitted.

HATS

Sun hats are compulsory in line with the Cancer Council Victoria’s Sunsmart Program, an internationally recognised skin cancer prevention program.  Students must wear a navy /broad brimmed hat.  Hats are available from the School Office.

EXCLUSIONS TO DRESS CODE

Items of clothing that are not suitable for school wear include:

  • Denim jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses and jackets
  • Baseball caps
  • Beanies (except during winter months)
  • Thongs (unless attending Swimming Program)
  • Moccasins/Ugg Boots/ Boots

LOST PROPERTY

Please ensure that all uniform items are clearly marked with your child’s name.  Any abandoned/misplaced school items are placed in the lost property cupboard in the corridor.  Please check this cupboard if your child has lost any uniform item/s.

CONSEQUENCES

Consequences may apply for not wearing a school uniform. Students are required to bring a letter from their parent for being out of uniform for a legitimate reason. Student will be offered a pre loved uniform [if available]. Re offenders – a letter will be sent to parents reminding them of uniform policy.

DRESS CODE – MUFTI DAYS

Wearing mufti to school is a privilege for students and there is a responsibility to be mindful about what is worn. This dress code ensures that students come to school in tidy, casual clothing suitable for learning and work environment, ready to participate in their lessons.  The purpose of our mufti days is also to support Scotts Head Public School’s chosen charities and worthy causes.  The mufti dress code is in effect from the time students arrive at school until they leave. If students are attending excursions or any other school-related activities that require school uniform, then that is to be worn unless the supervising teacher informs the students otherwise.

The following applies to wearing mufti:

  • Tops: Students must either wear a short or long-sleeved blouse/T-shirt/polo, or jumper. Shirts must be buttoned. Shoulders must be covered and exposed mid-sections are not allowed. Printed T-shirts must not display any inappropriate material. Sweaters and jackets of an appropriate size and length may be worn over, but not in place of, an appropriate top.
  • Pants/Skirts/Shorts: Appropriate school attire includes long pants, shorts or skirts worn with the waistband at the waist. Jeans in good repair are acceptable. Skirts and shorts must be of acceptable length (sitting no more than 5 cm above the knee).
  • Shoes: Sandals must have a back strap.
  • Headwear: Head coverings worn for religious reasons are allowed. Hats and hoods are not to be worn inside the classroom. Masks that cover the face are not allowed. Appropriate earrings are fine (studs/sleepers).

Examples of inappropriate clothing:

  • Excessively baggy pants, leggings, athletic wear, very short skirts or shorts and sweat pants.
  • Thongs, slippers and ugg boots.
  • Tops with plunging necklines, singlet/muscle/tank tops, midriff tops, see-through clothing or visible underwear.
  • Image or text on any item of clothing that promotes sexual references, violence, alcohol, tobacco or drugs. NB: Any student has the option to wear full school uniform.

Following the mufti dress code is one way that students can demonstrate our core PBL values by showing respect and taking responsibility for their appearance, indicating they wish to be a part of the Scotts Head Public School community. Consequences for refusing to follow the dress code may result in students being asked to come to school wearing school uniform on future mufti days.

Community Notice Board

Playgroup

Dear Community Partners

To keep our staff and families safe, Lifetime Connect management has made the difficult decision in keeping the supported playgroups suspended until Term 3, looking to return first day back, 21st July. Due to the 4 metre square per person restrictions, it is impossible to deliver playgroup responsibly.

Our wonderful playgroup staff are keeping connected with families as best they can, working tirelessly making weekly phone calls, sending out wonderful activity packs – we even have our very own private YouTube channel, for the staff to read stories, sing songs, demonstrate cooking and do music and movement.

Please contact me if you need to discuss anything in regards to playgroup.
