Be Safe - Be Responsible - Be Respectful - Be Your Best

Wednesday 11 November, 2020 - Week 5 - Term 4 - Issue 36

Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Kindergarten Orientation

It was lovely to finally get to meet our 2021 Kindergarten students yesterday, as they attended their first orientation day. They all settled in beautifully and Mrs Dilley is very excited about the year ahead. Earlier in the week I met with new parents via Zoom for a brief information session. We will host another Q&A session via zoom for all kindergarten parents at the conclusion of the 4 orientation sessions. In the meantime, if there is anything you would like to discuss about your child beginning school, I’m only a phone call away.

Year 5 Leader Speeches

Mr Munn and I have been working closely with our Year 5 students in the lead up to the 2021 Year 6 leader speeches. Students who have chosen to run for a leadership position have been asked to provide an overview of why they believe they would make a good leader, and after discussion with Mr Munn and myself, will present their speeches to the classes next Wednesday. We know our Year 5 students will continue to be great ambassadors for our school as they head into Year 6 next year.

End of Year Activities

At Tomerong School we love celebrating our students' achievements and our end of year celebrations are a great opportunity to recognise the great work of our students. We are pleased that, despite heavy restrictions in 2020, we are able to have a small presentation day assembly to celebrate our students’ achievements. However, this year there will be a number of restrictions in place, including a limit on the numbers of guests who can attend.

This year’s presentation day will look very different to other years. On Thursday 10 December we will hold an infants assembly, which will be followed by a primary assembly after lunch. Unfortunately invitations will be limited to the parents of award recipients. Parents of Kindergarten students and Year 6 students will be included in the invitation list as they receive certificates. Parents of the Year 5 students who have stood for captain will also be invited as the 2021 captains will be announced during the primary assembly.

This event will be held outdoors at our school, therefore if weather is unsuitable it may need to be postponed until a later date.

We understand this is a deviation for some families who traditionally attend our end of year celebration, but we hope this can go some way to celebrating our students’ achievement in 2020.

Invitations for parents who are eligible to attend will be sent out by Friday 27 November.

New Playground Equipment

I am super excited that our P&C last night voted in favour of new playground equipment being installed in 2021. This is a significant investment for our P&C and one our students will eagerly await it's arrival. We will keep you informed with updates on the installation.

Have a great week.

Remembrance Day

At 11am today we observed one minute silence to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

Book Character Dress Up Day!

A huge thank you to everyone who dressed up as their favourite book character or as a curious creature (with a wild mind!) last Friday to celebrate BOOK WEEK. I love seeing how creative the students are with their outfits and how much they enjoyed the day! It was a shame this year we were not able to have our annual parade, but the students certainly had just as much fun dressing up!

Thank you again to all the students and parents for your continued support for this special event.

Book Covering Help Needed

We have some fantastic new books for the library shelf and guided readers ready to be used in class, but they just need covering first! If you would like to volunteer some time to help the school, this is a job that can be done in the comfort of your own home! We supply you with the books, contact and can give you a lesson on how it is done.

Please contact Mrs Darby at the office if you can help!

School Locker - Uniform Orders

School Locker (school uniform) orders that have recently been placed by parents have been delivered to the office.  Please arrange for your children to pick them up from the office, or call us to arrange an alternative option.

For instructions on how to use School Locker to order uniforms for your children, please visit this link.

Perfect Weather For Poppers!

Class 5-6M will be selling poppers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays over the next three weeks. The money raised will help Year 6 purchase an end of year gift for the school. Frozen poppers and cold poppers will cost $1 and we will be selling them in front of the school canteen.

Vincentia High Transition Visits

Great news! Vincentia High School will be holding transition visits for students in Year 6 who are attending in 2021.

The first transition visit will be held on Monday 30 November, between 9am and 11am. Parents will need to provide transport for their child on this day. Parents can walk their child onto the grounds and Vincentia High staff will meet you at the picnic tables under the COLA in front of the administration block. For the first transition visit, students are expected to return to Tomerong Public School and attend their normal class for the remainder of the day.

The second transition visit is an “Orientation Day” for all of the Year 6 students in the local area and will be held on Tuesday 1 December, 2020. On orientation day, students can catch their local high school bus to Vincentia High School for an 8.15am start. Students are then able to return home by bus. However, if children are being driven by their parents/carers, we notify the start time as 8.30am and finish time at 2pm to avoid a crowded bus bay. Students meet in the hall from 8.30am on the day and wait in the playground until then.

The students will be supervised by Vincentia High School teachers on both transition days.

Additional information: Students must wear their school uniform (including school hat). They will also need to take a packed lunch and water bottle.

Sports Shorts

We have been a little unlucky with the weather over the past two weeks and this has affected our AFL skills sessions. I am working with the AFL to have some "catch up sessions" later in the term. The weather looks warm tomorrow so please ensure your child has a water bottle and hat. Students are to wear their sports uniform tomorrow for AFL and let's hope the predicted rain comes much later in the afternoon!

Run4Fun Colour Explosion

Did you know the P&C are installing a brand new playground at a considerable cost in early 2021? This was made possible through past fundraising efforts such as Easter raffles, cake stalls, BBQs and the Run4Fun Colour Explosion last year. The P&C are made up of a small team of dedicated parents who rely on the support of the school community. This year’s Run4Fun Colour Explosion is happening next Friday 20 November and at the moment there are a very limited number of students registered for fundraising. Please ensure you set up your child’s fundraising page by visiting www.myprofilepage.com.au and share on social media with family and friends asking for donations before next Friday. This ensures the community can continue supporting our amazing school with money raised going towards school and classroom resources. Your child will also get great prizes for fundraising for the Run4Fun Colour Explosion too. Permission notes (on yellow paper) need to be returned by Thursday 19 November.

Thank you

Mrs Raymer

P&C News

The Run4Fun Colour Explosion is happening again next Friday 20 November and although it is being run by the school staff, it is a P&C event. At the moment there is only a very small amount of students registered for fundraising online. Your support is important and appreciated and without it, we are unable to provide resources such as the installation of a brand new playground worth $70 000 in early 2021. Please support the P&C by setting up a fundraising page for your child at www.myprofilepage.com.au and sharing it with your friends and family on social media asking for donations. Your child can also get great prizes for their fundraising efforts. Without strong community support, we may have to make the difficult decision to cancel the event, so please jump online and start fundraising for our great school!

Thanks

We are inviting the Tomerong community to participate and help us raise funds to keep our beloved Hall alive. Pavers can be engraved with one name, a family name, or even your family pet if you want to!

What a great way to commemorate a loved one or a great time you have had at the hall, or even as a Christmas present. All engraved pavers will be permanently installed on the grounds surrounding Tomerong School of Arts.

The cost of a paver is $66.00, next step is to go to our website and fill in a form with the wording you would like.  Here’s the link
