Term Three Week 8 | Wednesday September 11, 2019

From the Principal

It is amazing how quiet it is when two classes are away!

Year 5 and 6 are on their Country Tour trip and as I write are en-route to Goulburn. This biennial trip is a highlight of the Senior boys’ time at Coogee Prep and combines Canberra and a regional tour. The itinerary is action-packed and I am sure a lot of fun is being had by all. A lot of work and planning goes into these trips and I want to thank Ms Gershon for pulling it all together with the assistance of Mr Gowland. Steph Doble has single-handedly organised all the fundraising in her usual calm and highly efficient manner and the P&F have been wonderful in funding the shortfall of the tour merchandise. The boys look great!

I am still receiving glowing feedback about the School Concert and thank you to all who have sent in notes of congratulation. It was a huge effort by everyone involved and the reward was the wonderful show we put on. The boys are still enjoying watching the video (which is available on our Facebook page).

We are staying alive with music with Miss Oakes our music teacher introducing a Tuesday Lunchtime Karaoke Club that all boys keen on singing can join.

The Athletics season is now over with the QUAD Carnival being the last in our sporting carnivals for the year. Well done to all who ran their hardest. Thanks to Mr O'Connor for organising the morning Athletics Training sessions that have taken place in the lead up to the event.

Next term we move back to Summer sport (Cricket and Basketball) and a full term of Saturday Sport. Year 2 will join the training in Term 4 to prepare them for Saturday Sport in 2020. They will train for whatever Sport they have selected with Mr O’Connor today.

Training times and days

Wednesday afternoon for Year 2 / 3 / 4 from 2-3pm. Basketball training at UNSW and cricket training at Kensington Oval.

Friday afternoon for Years 5 & 6 from 2.30 – 3.30. Basketball training will be at UNSW and the boys may be picked up from there. More details to follow.

The School Chess Competition is underway and open to Primary boys. Years 3 and 4 are part of the Junior Competition and 5 and 6 make up the Senior Competition.

On September 21 our annual fundraiser takes place and I cannot stress how important this event is for the School. P&F funds raise crucial cash for us to buy the extras we need. I urge you all to support this event by attending or donating auction or raffle items. Aside from that, it is always a great fun night out and an opportunity for parents to catch up!

Can I ask that any parents planning to leave the School at the end of 2019, inform the School by the end of the term so we can advise those on waiting lists there is room.

Can I remind all parents that car line is not the place to ask questions of the teachers.  If you have an issues please email the teacher in question who can follow it up the next day.

The wind has dropped and the sun is out - hooray!

Kind regards

John Dicks

Principal

Quote of the Week

Give me the clear blue sky over my head, and the green turf beneath my feet, a winding road before me, and a three hours' march to dinner.

Sickness at School

There are too many children staying in at lunchtime because they are 'sick'. If your son is too unwell to go outside at recess and lunch he is too unwell to be at school and we will call you to collect him.  This does not apply to children with injuries who cannot walk unassisted. It is important that boys get outside and run around in the fresh air or even sit down in the fresh air.  Most boys see staying inside as a means of getting ipad time (which we are not allowing anyway).

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Books

Covered books are flowing into the library thanks top the efforts of Mui Yen, Trish Saad and Janelle Lloyd and we are very grateful as there are over 130 books to be covered after our Book Drive.

A new birthday book list is being worked on now as we purchased everything off the last one!

Spanish - Laguagenut

Teachers have distributed the boys’ logins and passwords for Languagenut so they can logon and practise their Spanish at home. There have been a few issues which have now been rectified.

Engineers in the making

Last week we were fortunate enough to have EWB [ Engineers Without Borders] visit our years 5 and 6 classes. The EWB is part of the UNSW Engineering Program and contacted us to offer free sessions for our senior classes. The boys enjoyed and participated in 2 programs- Renewable Energy and Prosthetic Limbs.
