Week 8

Principal Updates

Week 8 is upon us and the gorgeous dry season weather - although I do hope it cools down a touch prior to our big event this coming Friday.

Breakfast Club

Huge thanks to Mr Wilson and Mrs Griffin for their efforts with our  Thursday Breakfast Club last week- certainly a big hit for many once again. If any parents can help out on Thursday mornings we would love your support.

Sports Day

You will see an outline of our program for  Friday 10th later in the newsletter. As always we welcome and encourage parents, adult family members and carers to come along and join in our fabulous events.

However a few reminders:

  • Any school age family members are NOT to come to Alawa. They are expected to attend their own school on those days
  • During Recess and Lunch breaks all Alawa children will be brought back into the inner area of the school and the gates closed. Family members are welcome to join us
  • If any families are taking their children home early they must be signed out through the front office.

Car Park Update

Thanks for your continued patience. We hope to have the works finished in the next two weeks - stay tuned for updates and advice regarding new traffic management plans to do our best to maximise safety for all in our school community.

End of Term 2

Just confirming usual teaching is in place right through to the end of term. Our classes all continue their Maths and Reading small group rotations and focussed teaching right till the end of term. In the last few days [Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th] some special activities, games etc may be planned. Class teachers will advise of any changes through DoJo / See Saw as usual.

Student Reports

Tuesday 21st June reports for all children in Preschool through to Year 6 will be emailed home to parents and a copy also emailed to students in Years 3-6. The students will access at school via their email on Wednesday 22nd June. If for any reason you require a hard copy of the report OR would prefer your child [Years 3-6] not be sent their report please advise the front office by Wednesday 15th June.

NOTE: For the children in Year 5 and 6 going on camp their reports will be emailed out Monday 20th June so they have a chance to review with their parents prior to heading off on camp the following morning.

Welcome to Week 8.

FRIDAY. As we are aware this Friday is sports day. I know that our committee has worked really hard in making this happen and I am really looking forward to watching the events and helping to ensure our students and families have a wonderful day. We hope you can join us for some or all of the day.

There will be no instrumental lessons or Playgroup happening this week due to Sport’s Day. As we have new families coming to Alawa next year, we will still be running our Playgroup.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY- Sunday June 5:

We have #OnlyOneEarth. Let's take care of it.

This united Nations Initiative provides some great advice for individuals and communities to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. A Practical Guide to living sustainably in harmony with nature was developed for World Environment Day 2022. See the following website. https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/get-involved/practical-guide. There is always opportunities to be involved in teaching about our environment or looking after our environment at Alawa. We appreciate the work of volunteers in the Farm and maintaining the Preschool outside learning area. Please let us know if you would like to be involved.

Our Professional Learning Day for teachers is next Tuesday, after our long weekend. Your support with these days provides us with an excellent opportunity to further develop our knowledge as professionals. That way we can continue to ensure we provide the best possible culture, environment and learning for your students.

Enjoy an extra long weekend with your family and don’t forget the

School photos- reminder

School Photos have been scheduled for Week 9, Wednesday 15th June.

Envelopes are to be handed into the front office with details clearly marked.

Packages can be purchased from $27.00 and all sibling orders MUST be in before the day to be  included in the day’s schedule.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate in contacting the front office.

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 7 of Term 2 was....Transition Hughes with 144 points!!!

Carpark / Road safety - important information

Parents/carers

Thank you for your patience and understanding in anticipation of our new car park, which we hope will be finished within the next month.

Recently we have had some concerns and complaints raised by direct neighbours of Alawa School. We there fore  would like to remind families to stay vigilant with road and car parking safety.

This includes:

  • Not parking across the surrounding residents drive ways and hindering access to driveways or private property.
  • To be aware if dropping off on one of the main roads and not kiss and go, that students are looking both ways BEFORE crossing the street
  • To not call students out to your car if stopped in the middle of the kiss and go road
  • To not park and leave your car in the kiss and go section, stay with your car at all times
  • To at all times remind your child to be road smart – STOP – LOOK – LISTEN

Students safety is our number one priority and we appreciate you supporting the school during this time.

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 7 of Term 2 Goyder was ahead of Manton and Finnis  with 3985 points!!!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 50456 points!!!

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 7 Term 2: 89.21%

It is terrific having all our families back with us at school.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 7: Year 2 Riley-Smith with 95.91%!!!

In the lead for the term...Year 3 Block with 91.88%!!! Amazing job!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 25 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 7 Term 2!

For Week 7 the classes with the least lates were: Preschool Red Group, 2 Riley-Smith, 4/5 Lawrence and 5/6 Baines with 0 lates each!!!

In the lead for the term we have....Preschool Red Group with 0 lates!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Library news

Have you read -Blue Flower by Sonya Hartnett? This book has been shortlisted in the CBCA Picture Book of the Year category.

Blurb - A young child describes her qualms about going to school and how hard she finds asking the teacher for help, how she feels shy about making friends, not being funny or a fast runner. But through her love of art, a conversation with her mother and her observations about nature she comes to see that being different might not be a bad thing after all.

The CBCA judges say...

A beautiful book exploring important themes of disliking school, self-love and being proud to be different. …The book is filled with genuine emotion and has a strong central character revealed through convincing inner dialogue. This character and situation will resonate with many young readers and the overall message is inspiring. A thought-provoking book which will generate lots of discussions with children.

Playgroup news

Last Friday we had a great time! We are loving seeing all our friends again and exploring preschool. This week we really enjoyed the lime green play dough, it was even scented with lime essential oil, so we all had fun guessing the scent! We had a wonderful time playing in the mermaid wooden doll house and creating all sorts of interesting scenarios in the sea! We also go busy making ice-creams in the café and serving the adults. A highlight this week was cooking together. Much to the children’s delight, we made scones! Measuring, counting, mixing, rubbing, and tasting – it was so much fun! It was a stunning dry season morning, so we spent most of it outside in the preschool yard, digging in the sand pit, riding the bikes and scooters and painting. For morning tea, we shared our scones with our parents and indulged in jam and cream. They were delicious.

Join us for another fun week of Playgroup next Friday when we plan to visit the Farm again and see how much the chicks have grown.

*There will be NO playgroup this Friday due to our annual school sport day. The last session of Playgroup for Term 2 will be 17th June. We will not be running on the last Friday of Term 2, 24th June.
