From the Principal, Ms Peta Hanson

Thank you to our wonderful P&C!

Each year, the first Wednesday of March is P&C Day! Our P&C volunteers direct so much of their time and energy towards our school and we are so grateful! As well as fundraising, these associations are the opportunity for parents to advocate for their school as a combined community voice, establishing strong home/ school partnerships along the way. So, to all of our wonderful P&C volunteers we say - THANK YOU for the wonderful contributions you make and the time and energy you devote to supporting all of us at BHPS and beyond! Our next P&C meeting is scheduled for the 12 March and will commence with the AGM. New faces and ideas are always welcome, so please feel free to come along and find out about the wonderful contribution the P&C makes to our school.

K-2 Family Picnic- TOMORROW Friday 1 March

We look forward to our K-2 Family Picnic tomorrow Friday 1 March from 4pm on the oval. It will be a lovely way for our K-2 families to reconnect and meet our new families as well. We would greatly appreciate if families could take home any rubbish so please bring a garbage bag. In the interests of children’s safety, we ask that NO ALCOHOL or GLASS BOTTLES are brought to the event.

Before and After School Supervision

Please be reminded that teacher supervision is provided on the playground from 8.35am in the mornings. In the interests of children’s safety it is advised that children are not to be on site before this time unless engaged in supervised activities such as band rehearsals, PSSA training or attending OOSH. Equally important is ensuring that children go to their designated pick up spot to meet their parent/carer promptly when the bell rings at 3pm. Our school has a before and after school service on the premises to support our families with out of school hours care. For more information, please go to the BH OOSH website at: www.bhoosh.com.au.

High School Information for 2020

Please keep an eye on the Beacon for information and brochures regarding ‘Open Nights’ and information evenings for our local high schools. These ‘Open Nights’ will be held in coming weeks and they are a wonderful opportunity to see high schools in action, learn about the extensive curriculum opportunities and quality teaching and learning programs that our public schools offer as well as ask any questions. We will also endeavour to include information regarding entrance exams for specialist classes, such as GATS classes as the information comes to us. Inquiries regarding these entrance exams can be made directly through the relevant high school. All Year 6 parents will receive a "Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government School in 2020" Information Guide and Expression of Interest Form on 11 March 2019 which will outline the process of Year 7 2020 enrolment in more detail. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at school should you have any questions about this process.

JUNIOR STATE CUP- TOUCH FOOTBALL

Congratulations to all the Beacon Hill students who participated in the Junior State Cup for touch football in Port Macquarie last weekend. The majority of Manly teams all made the semi finals and with 12 undefeated games, Bailey Rudd and the U10 A Boys', took out the Northern Conference State Cup Championship in a thrilling 9-6 grand final. It was a hugely successful event and a great experience for the following players who represented Manly Warringah Touch Football Association:

Billy Lowe; Dylan Darsley; Beau Bourke; Oli Thompson; Keira Gray; Summer Bourke; Charlotte Walker; Taiaroa Lowe; Bailey Rudd; Xavier Bosland (rep Inverell).

Good luck to all of those who now go on to represent Manly Warringah when the Northern Conference meet the Southern Conference for the State finals in Wollongong in April.

Our lovely KT students thoroughly enjoyed their $4 a farmer day!

Homework Club

This year I will be hosting a Homework Club on Wednesday mornings from 8.30-9.00am in the Library. I will be available to support any children from Years 1-6 that would like some extra help with their homework, projects and learning goals.

This is held every Wednesday morning. No RSVP necessary-just turn up when you would like some support. I look forward to seeing you then.

NAPLAN 2019

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses the literacy and numeracy skills of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in schools across Australia.

NAPLAN assesses writing, language conventions, reading and numeracy.

NAPLAN results will help you understand how your child is progressing through school.

Moving to NAPLAN Online

In 2018 NAPLAN began moving from pencil and paper tests to online tests in some states and territories. A small proportion of NSW schools participated in NAPLAN Online in 2018.

NAPLAN will be administered online in 2019. The move to NAPLAN Online means new benefits for your child’s school including better assessment and greater student engagement.

The NAPLAN online test window starts on 14 May 2019 and finishes on 24 May 2019. A more detailed timetable of the test schedule will be provided closer to the date. All tests will be administered online with the exception of Year 3 Writing which will be a pencil and paper test.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills your child is already learning in school.

Teachers will ensure students are familiar with test formats prior to NAPLAN tests. The best way to support your child through NAPLAN is to encourage them to do the best they can on the day.

For more information please refer to the attached information from ACARA, NAPLAN online-information for parents and carers. As always, if there are any concerns/ questions regarding the SRT, please don’t hesitate to contact us at school.
