Screen Time
There has been a lot of research around the negative impact of children having too much screen time. For many families, issues around how much time children are spending on devices can be a source of contention. Limiting screen time can be difficult to monitor and enforce, with arguments sometimes occurring. Thankfully, the latest version of software on the iPad has a function called ‘Screen Time’ in the settings which allows parents to set how much screen time their child has each day. It is up to each family to decide how much screen time is suitable, but a suggestion would be for children to have 30 minutes each school day and one hour each day on the weekend. Once the time is up, your child is locked out of selected apps on the iPad unless a code is entered, and this is a different code to the one that is used to unlock the device.
Many children bring their iPads to school for educational purposes as part of BYOD, so there is the ability to have some apps which are always allowed so the students are not locked out of the device while using it for school purposes. The software also allows the setting of ‘Downtime’ when the iPad cannot be used. A suggestion for downtime would be from 8pm to 8am as this will prevent children from playing on the iPad late at night or early in the morning. It is also important that as parents we are role models for our children about using devices appropriately and limit the amount of time we spend on them. We cannot expect our children to get off their device if we are always on ours.
Kung Fu
This term we are trialling a Kung Fu program for our Stage 2 and 3 non-PSSA students. PSSA students get to enjoy leaving the school each Friday morning to go off and play a competitive game against other schools, so we thought it would be nice for our school sport students to do something special as well. Students will be having five lessons focussing on fitness, body control and simple self-defence techniques.
Ride-A-Thon
On Thursday 27 June we will be holding a Ride-a-thon.
The Ride-a-thon will take place from 9:00am-3:00pm on the School's oval.
Students will be asked to bring their bikes to school where they will participate in a theory lesson on bike safety and then ride a set course around the school for twenty minutes.
Students who do not have a bike may bring along their scooter. All students will be required to wear a helmet when riding their bike or scooter.
Please return all sponsor cards and money by Thursday 27 June.
There will be a prize for the highest fundraiser in K-2 and Years 3-6.
There will also be one 'lucky draw' prize per class for every child who returns money.
School Uniform
Our school prides itself on all students wearing the correct school uniform and this includes the appropriate school jacket or jumper. Please ensure your child has their name written on their clothing and that they put in it in their bag when they take it off. We have been finding a number of jackets without names on them around the school recently. Please save your child wearing non-school jackets for at home and the weekend. A large number of jackets and jumpers are sitting in lost property outside the multi-purpose room so please check there if your child has lost theirs’.
Have a wonderful fortnight and long weekend!

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 22 May we celebrated National Simultaneous Story time. It was wonderful to know that our students were part of 1,138,889 kids from across Australia and New Zealand who stopped to read Matt Cosgroves book “Alpacas With Maraccas.” K-2 students came together in the Library while 3-6 buddied up in their classrooms to watch and listen to Matt Cosgrove read his book with a pair of real alpacas by his side. They were so cute!! The fun didn’t stop there. Mr Field then broke out into a Mexican dance and entertained us with his moves. A big thankyou to Year 1 students who displayed their talents and performed the Mexican Hat Dance to K-2 students. Thank you to Mrs Booker, Miss McKellar and Miss Bourke for organising the dance. What a wonderful morning it was. OLEI OLEI!!!!!
Zone Cross Country
On Friday 24 May, 63 students from Heathcote Public School competed in the Engadine Zone Cross Country Carnival at Heathcote Oval. We had perfect conditions and some outstanding results.
Congratulations to Zac P, Lucas M, Telina A, Gerard K & Matilda A who will be representing our school at the Sydney East Carnival. Good luck and well done Heathcote!

Performing Band
On Monday 27 May, 9 students from the Performance Band went to Engadine High School for a band workshop. We learnt three new pieces of music; Infinity, Surfing USA and Geronimo. At the end of the day we performed for our family and friends. All of the Year 6 students got to introduce a song at the performance. We all had so much fun and we learnt a lot.

Drama
On Tuesday 28 May, the drama group went to Bankstown Sports Club to present their play at Primary Play Day. The play was titled 'The Suitcase'. The Drama group and Mr Campbell have been working really hard to workshop and create this original piece of drama. The play is about a magical suitcase that has the ability to provide flashbacks, an event of significance of past owners. The drama students had an amazing time performing and watching other performances.

PHILIPPINES BOOK DRIVE
On behalf of the recipients of the wonderful books, which Heathcote community have donated, a very big thank you.
The quantity and quality of your donated books was very impressive.
There are now 250 kg of books going to Philippino needy and deserving students.
The educational and enjoyment aspects from receiving books are obvious but the other thing to keep in mind is the feeling that they know someone else cares about their future.
Thank you once again.

We are very keen to set fundraising goals for the coming year (and beyond if possible) and we are seeking community input.
If you have any ideas where our fundraising money could be spent, but cannot make it to the meetings, I would really like to hear from you! Please call me if you have any suggestions you would like considered.
At our most recent meeting we voted to contribute financially toward an upgrade of the sound system in our school hall. Our next meeting will be held Tuesday 18 June at 7pm in the Library. Everyone is welcome and I would especially love to welcome new members. Please call me if you like to discuss anything relating to P&C or if you have any questions. My number is 0402 741 322.
I would urge anyone to please come along to P&C meetings if you’d like to contribute further, or if you have any questions, suggestions or feedback, as these meetings are ultimately where events are discussed and decisions are made. If you ever have any questions or feedback on any P&C related matters, I strongly urge you to contact me either via email or via my mobile number – 0402 741 322.
Thank you
Tamar Burns
P&C President
Woolworths’ Earn & Learn program is running until 25 June.
We have already emptied the box at Engadine Woolworths and look forward to checking it again this week. Stickers can be placed in either the collection box located in the office at School or at Engadine Woolworths. At the end of June the school will be able to select from a large range of learning and play resources based on the number of stickers we have collected.
If you are available to help count stickers, I would love to hear from you!

We need your help please!
As you know School Banking @HPS is processed by parent volunteers. But just like you, our team are busy (some of whom have been helping out at school banking for over 10 years) and we are now short of volunteers as some have had to reduce their days due to increased work commitments.
So we need your HELP. We urgently need at least 3 more parent volunteers to ensure we can continue to run CBA School Banking at HPS. We currently have over 150 students taking part in school banking so we are hoping that finding 3 more school banking parent helpers is not a big ask! If you can spare just 2 hours on a Monday only 2-3 times a term then please call our School Banking Coordinator, Helen Holloway on 0434 120 218, or let the office know. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
From the HPS School Banking team,
Connie, Lisa, Danielle, Sandee, Kerin, Gemima & Helen
The icy cold winds of winter have finally hit so our winter menu is in full swing complete with chicken nuggets and warm milos to keep ourselves as warm as possible.
We have increased our inside activities which include Lego masters comps, dance battles, dinosaur excavations and Marvel creations galore!!!
Some families may have noticed that the landing as you enter HOOSH has orange mesh on it. Contrary to the urbane myth that a child got their head stuck in there, the mesh has been placed there as we have been advised that the railings do not meet the Australian standards, so therefore need to be replaced. The engineers are currently looking at options on how they will fix this.
As always, if your child is away sick or you have travel plans during the school term which coincide with the days your child attends HOOSH, please let us know when you advise the school.
If you require urgent casual placements please contact Alana on 0437 001 752 or email hoosh@live.com.au.
