Christ the King North Rocks Newsletter

2020, Term 3 Week 4: Friday 14th August, 2020.

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. The Solemnity of the Assumption is one of the many feast days we acknowledge and celebrate the role Mary played in the life of her son Jesus and the role she plays in our daily lives. Upon my reflection this week I came across a piece by  Pope John Paul II from 1999 that I believe helps us better understand the significance of this feast day in the Church’s Liturgical Calendar. The passage also explains how Our Lady intervenes for us all with God in the Heavenly Kingdom.

Taken up into heaven, Mary shows us the way to God, the way to heaven, the way to life. She shows it to her children baptized in Christ and to all people of good will. She opens this way especially to the little ones and to the poor, those who are dear to divine mercy. The Queen of the world reveals to individuals and to nations the power of the love of God whose plan upsets that of the proud, pulls down the mighty from their thrones and exalts the humble, fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich empty away (cf.Lk 1:51-53).

Pope John Paul II Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In the coming weeks we will be inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process. We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Christ the King North Rocks. The survey is now open and closes at 3pm on Friday 28th August 2020 The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

www.tellthemfromme.com/ctkttfm20 Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

As per the last six months we have endeavoured with the assistance and guidance of CEDP and the NSW Health Commission to keep you up to date with communications regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have any clarifying questions regarding any aspect of the pandemic in the respect to the school, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Thanks

Our school photographs will be held on Friday 18th September [week 9] Details regarding the packages available and costings have been distributed to our families through the normal communication channels. The children will wear their summer uniforms on the day. More details will be provided in the coming weeks.

As mentioned in our last newsletter Parramatta Council have been proactive in preparing a proposal regarding the new drop off and pick up drive through in Burradoo Close. Following initial meetings with representatives from the local neighbourhood and the council, submissions from local residents and myself are currently being considered at a council level. I will keep the community abreast of the proposal’s development over the coming weeks.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers

Tony Hughes

Principal

What's happening in Year 2

Term 3 has been lots of fun in Year 2 so far!

We are having a great time learning about persuasive texts. This week we are trying to convince someone that dogs are the best pet. We need to use strong, high modality language when trying to persuade someone of our point of view.

Click here to see our great work.

Captain's Chat

In recent weeks our grades at CTK have been busy. Down in Kindergarten they have been learning about what they can find in a church as a religion subject. They have gone to the Christ The King Church and have had a look around. After searching, they returned to class and listed what they found. In Year 1, they have learnt how to write a persuasive text to convince Mr Hughes of something as their writing subject.  This helps them with their persuasive writing and also encourages them to work even more efficiently.

In Year 2,  they have been learning about how to be peacemakers in our world. This is a part of their religion unit, and it is helping them become better people at the same time.  During this subject they have been answering questions personally and have answered this question in a great amount of detail. Year 3 have made a class mantra and year 4 have made a fabulous art piece called the great wave by Hokusai.

Year 5 has learned how to use spreadsheets on their technology to create graphs. This helps them in their math unit. The teachers have seen their progress and have decided that it is the time to begin their Minecraft Project. For this Project, they must make a city on their worlds.

For the last 4 weeks, Year 6 have been working very hard on their VOY (Voice Of Youth) Speeches. This week, each student in the class was required to read their speech out loud to their peers. With a total of 52 speeches, the year 6 teachers now have to decide who will be part of the top ten who will read their speeches again to Mr Hughes and Mrs Walsh.

For after recess Assemblies, there has been a change. For the remainder of the year, assemblies will only be on Mondays and Fridays. This has been changed because the teachers would like to have some more time in class.  This term has been a little bit rocky but the teachers have guided us through it and we have coped well so far.

Sincerely,

CTK School Captains - Laura and Jack

Intermedicate: Wednesdays from 3.00pm to 4.00pm, starting on 22nd July 2020.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games.

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email enrol@sydneyacademyofchess.com.au for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of chess on (02) 9745 1170.

Has your child been absent over the last 7 days? Have you notified the school?

Did you know that if your child is absent from school, you have 7 days to supply an explanation. The preferred method is via a skoolbag notification but you can also send an email or telephone the school.

If we do not receive an explanation within 7 days of your child’s absence, their attendance record will be marked as ‘Unexplained’.  This is a permanent notation on their attendance file.

Our appreciation and thanks to the families who continually notify the school whenever their child is absent.

Parish News

Masks are now highly recommended to be worn at all Masses

NSW Health, supported by the Premier of NSW is highly recommending everyone in NSW to wear masks in any situation with the potential for COVID-19 transmission.

Therefore it is officially recommended all worshippers in the Diocese of Parramatta wear a mask to Mass. This would be as people arrive on parish grounds, during Mass or the service and afterwards as they leave. During Communion, the mask may be removed, but it should be in place at all other times.

We understand the inconvenience that masks may pose, but the health of our parishioners and the wider community is our highest concern.  We sincerely thank you for understanding, and for playing your part in keeping our community safe.
