St Pat's News

November 20, 2019

At St Patrick’s Parish Primary School we hold the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of our school.

From The RE Leader - Peter Sanderson

This Sunday, we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. This is the last Sunday of the church year before we start the new year the following week with the First Sunday of Advent. The freeing power of Christ is alive and working among us to lift up the poor and needy, and to bring Life into a world of misery. His is not the ‘usual’ kind of kingdom that we know in the world of today. His ‘kingship’ is a power that moves more in a cosmic sense. We are invited to participate in this transforming work, bringing justice and peace into every heart and into every aspect of Creation.

Lord Jesus Christ, You are a King who cares deeply for his people.

May we search out those in need, so that Love and Justice will reign

as the Kingdom of God is brought forth within us.

We ask our prayer in your name and in the power of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

School-led Parish Mass

A reminder to families that on Sunday 1st December the school staff are rostered for the ministries at our parish mass. Mass will be at 10.30am at St Patrick’s Church. On this day we will be celebrating the 1st Sunday in the season of Advent, the season of preparation and anticipation leading up to Christmas. We invite all families to join us at mass on this day.

From The Principal - Sue Paulka

Dear Parents, Parishioners, Carers, Staff & Students,

Welcome

This week we welcome the Rayner family to our school - Isabella (Yr 5) and Luke (Foundation)  and their parents, Melinda and Alan, and older brother, Ben. Isabella and Luke have moved from St Mary’s in Colac.

We hope the Rayner family enjoy being part of our St Patrick’s community and I know everyone will make them feel welcome.

Staffing Announcements

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of two new teachers for 2020.   Benson Steere has been appointed to the Yr 5/6 team and Rachael Osborne will be a boost and specialist teacher.

Benson is originally from Warrnambool and is moving back to the area. He is currently teaching at Sacred Heart in Mildura. Benson has been teaching for 5 years and has held numerous roles in that time including classroom teacher, PE teacher, boost teacher and Italian teacher.

Rachael Osborne has been at our school for 5 years, working first of all as our gap year trainee and then as a Learning Support Officer while completing her teaching degree. Rachael’s employment now as a graduate teacher means that we will continue to be able to utilise her many skills.

School Performance

Our first whole school rehearsal went very well today and everyone is very excited about the main performance next week.  Children will be required to have their costumes at school next Wednesday for the final dress rehearsal. They will then take their costume home so that they can come dressed in costume that evening. If there are any parents or family members who are not able to make the evening performance, they are very welcome to attend the dress rehearsal at 1.00pm. The evening performance begins at 7.00pm and all students are asked to be present by 6.50pm.

Transition

Our new Foundation students for 2020 will attend their final transition morning next Monday before our full school transition day on December 10th.  An information night for 2020 Foundation parents will be held next Monday November 25th at 7.00pm in the F/1 rooms.

Moyne Try-Athlon

Good luck to all our students competing in the Moyne Try-Athlon next Tuesday.

Kind regards,

Sue Paulka

Weeding Help Needed

We are looking for help weeding some of our gardens at school. Do you have a couple of hours to spare? Maybe you have volunteer points you would like to redeem? If so please bring some gloves and come and see Janine in the office.

No Parking at the School Crossing

In an effort to improve child safety in and around the school crossing, the Moyne Shire has erected a number of "No Standing" signs near the crossing, which means no parking is permitted in the area between the signs. Please be mindful of this when dropping off and picking up your children so that you are not fined.

The office is open from 8.30am - 4.00pm each day.

There is no supervision for students before 8.40am. Teachers use the time prior to the doors opening for setting up for the day, therefore they are not available to supervise students. Students who arrive at school prior to 8.40am need to wait at the side door near the hall until the doors are opened.

The bell for the start of the day rings at 8.55am, any student arriving after this time needs to be signed in using the iPad at the office.

The bell for the end of the day rings at 3.20pm. If for any reason you are going to be later than 3.30pm to collect your child/children, please contact the school office.

Whole School Positive Behaviour Support System

In 2020 we will be implementing a whole school positive behaviour support system. To introduce this to our students and community we will begin with using the mantra ‘Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be a Learner’.  You will notice that these words will be highly visible in different positions around our school in the coming weeks. These words reflect how we will be guided to behave in all areas of our school. The aim is for all children, staff and parents to be clear on all our behavioural expectations.

Whole School Performance Costume Information

Our 2019 whole school performance will be held on Wednesday November 27th and I would like to make you aware of costume requirements for your child. The setting for this particular performance is the Middle East/Arabia.  A quick Google images search for middle eastern/arabic costumes/dress will provide you with many examples for inspiration. A further Google search for Ali Baba and/or Aladdin costumes shows harem pants, head scarves, fezes, vests, sandals, long shirts, etc. which seem to be the general look of the time.

All students in Year F-6 are asked to wear a costume  with the above criteria in mind. There are some examples pictured.

The following groups of actors, however, need to be a little more specific.  They are:

The Palace Guards:  White harem (or baggy) pants and white tops.  This group of actors will be provided with a gold sash and headband to define their association with the wealthy Sultan.

The Bongo Bandits:  Black Harem (or baggy) pants and loose fitting black long sleeve top or vest. This group of actors will be provided with a red sash and headband to define their association with the Bandits.

Dusty and Sandy: Knee-length baggy trousers, red and white striped socks, white sleeveless vest, red braces and a red fez (this will be provided).

The Three Sheiks:  Sheiks could be dressed similarly with white harem pants and tops with gold accessories and head towels/scarves and a thick beard if you like. A funny addition can be dark sunglasses which gives them the wealthy celebrity look.

Semolina, Tapioca and Figgy:  These three handmaidens are associated with the wealthy Sultan, so they need to appear well dressed and affluent.  A google search for ‘Princess Jasmine’s Handmaidens’ will give you an idea of what these characters could wear.

If you have any issues with sourcing a costume, please let me know as soon as possible. Please do not feel that you need to buy new things - repurposing clothing the children already have will be fine e.g. elastic around the bottom of baggy pants will make harem pants.

Our last playgroup session for 2019 will be on Monday December 9
