Term 4 Week 4: Monday 4th November 2019

Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have of course begun our preparations for 2020. One of the significant factors in our planning is the location of our class groups. With our four kinder groups becoming Year 1 next year, we had planned for a major movement program through the school. However this would be far too disruptive for the school as a whole. We would then have to move everything again in two years anyway. So we have decided to begin next year’s Kindergarten in the current Year 1 classrooms. Year 2 will be in the rooms on the other side of the TAS area which will become a shared learning space available to Kindergarten and Year 2. The current Kindergarten classrooms will be the 2020 Year 1 classrooms. Year 3 will move down stairs meaning that all Primary classes will be downstairs and all Infants classes will be upstairs. Library will not need to be moved as well. Grade specific furniture and resources will be moved at the end of this month. This has been the previous practice at MIPS which I am told was very successful for the students.

We are scheduled to have a Staff Development Day before the end of the year and so again to minimise disruption we will have this on the same day as the furniture etc is moved. This day will be Friday November 29.

With appreciation of your ongoing support,

Stephen Dowd, Principal

MIPS Staff Development Day - Friday 29th November 2019

Our Staff Development Day this term is on Friday in week 7. The agenda for this Staff Development Day will be on Religious Education - Learning and Formation. We have progressed significantly over recent years in the implementation of our Inquiry Learning platform. This day will be integral in the culmination of this work and our preparations for 2020 and beyond. Please mark this date in your diaries as this is a pupil free day, there will be no classes. COSHC will be open for the Pupil Free Day on Friday, 29th November from 6:30am - 6:30pm. Forms are available at COSHC, feel free to contact Courtney on 0417 203 333.

October - The Month of the Rosary

October was the month of the Rosary and designated The Extraordinary Missionary Month 2019, by Pope Francis. As a Marian school, Mary Immaculate has a particular devotion to our mother Mary. Each day of October we gathered together at 11am at our Church, to pray a decade of the rosary and to reflect on the Rosary Mysteries of the day. We also incorporated into our time, the Mission Rosary. The Mission Rosary helps children to understand that they belong to a Universal Church that shares God’s love with our global human family. As they pray each decade they remember children in that continent and how, through Christ, we are all connected. This also aligned with our Religious Education learning in our Mission units of work. The month of October has been one of prayer, learning, advocacy, fundraising and humility as we strive to be the face of Christ to those in need.

Religious Education Coordinator

Kinder Orientation - Numeracy Information Session

Last Thursday we held the Numeracy Information Session for parents during the Kindergarten Orientation. Parents heard about the structure of the Numeracy block, the phases of learning - Surface, Deep and Transfer, the ‘Numeracy at Home’ website and every family took home an Early Years Numeracy Kit. The room was buzzing with curiosity and enthusiasm as parents participated in a variety of hands-on numeracy activities and discovered the ‘mathematics’ in each one. An enormous congratulations to the group of Year 3 students who led the activity groups and asked questions to promote ’hard thinking’. It was a proud moment for MIPS to hear such positive feedback about the students and how they conducted themselves!

Numeracy @ Home

Have you had a chance to look at the ‘Numeracy @ Home’ website?  For families with young children and those preparing for Kindergarten, this site has episodes to view and tip sheets that support Mathematics through the rich experiences of everyday life.

Carpark Etiquette

We are fortunate to have a carpark for Mary Immaculate Primary.

Parents are reminded that all cars need to be parked in marked spaces only. This allows for the safe passage of other cars through the car park whilst also maximising the safety of all pedestrians, including all children, at all times. Please respect other members of the community by using the car park in a safe and respectful manner.

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Supervision begins at 8:25am.

Children should not be left at school before this time.

A ‘kiss and drop’ zone operates in the morning if you do not wish to walk your child into school. Adults must stay in the car at all times if using the ‘kiss and drop’ zone. The children’s bags must be in the car with them to ensure they can exit quickly. At no time can a car be left unattended in the ‘kiss and drop’ zone. If you wish to walk your child into school, please drive up the ramp to the car park. Children take their bags to the classroom and then must go straight to the playground for supervision. No one is to remain in the building before school unless they have made a formal appointment with a staff member. If this is the case, you must sign in at the office. Parents who come down onto the playground are asked to stand to the side and allow their child to socialise with the other children on the playground. The perimeter gates are locked each morning. The Barnier Drive main gate entrance remains open during the day.

DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL

School finishes at 3:20pm and we appreciate your efforts to pick up your child promptly at that time.

Supervision ceases at 3:40pm. The 'kiss and drop' zone does not operate in the afternoon. Parents/caregivers are required to park in the top car park and collect children from the designated point outside the building. Please do not go into the building to collect children from classrooms. Please note, children are not allowed to walk to the car park and meet their parents. They must be collected from the teacher. The perimeter gates are closed after the last bus leaves in the afternoon. If there is an emergency and you are late to collect your child, please contact the school office. Children can become anxious when parents are late or they are unclear about their afternoon arrangements.
Students arriving before 8:25am or remaining at school after 3:30pm are required to be enrolled in COSHC. Students are not to be left outside the school main gate unsupervised. This is a child protection issue of grave concern.

Leaving Student Form

If you intend to withdraw your child from Mary Immaculate Primary School please download, complete and return the leaving student form as soon as possible. Note that there is a 10 school week notice period otherwise a full term's fees will be payable.

2020 Parramatta Diocesan Team Sport Trials are OPEN

ALL 2020 Team Sport Trials are OPEN, however, the Summer Sports of BASKETBALL and TENNIS registrations close for these sports ONLY on Monday, 11th November as these trials will be held in November 2019.

All other sports trials will be held in Term One and Two in 2020.

Any Primary students enrolled in Year 5 and 6 in 2020 are invited to participate in the Parramatta Diocesan Team Sport Trials.

It is important to note that these trials are generally for those children who display an above-average ability and/or have representative experience in their chosen sport. While teams are open in age it is strongly recommended that only children of a representative standard in Years 5 & 6 in 2020 be invited to attend.

Parramatta Diocesan trials will be held in the following sports: AFL, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League (11yrs & Opens), Rugby Union, Softball, Tennis & Touch Football. The sports of Diving & Golf will be held at the MacKillop level.

To be eligible for selection for these trials an Online Team Registration Form must be completed that can be accessed below.

http://www.primarysportparra.catholic.edu.au/

This online form is an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST for the 2020 Parramatta Diocesan Primary Sport Team trials. Parents may complete this form to attend a selection trial. One form is to be completed per child, per individual sport. Each sport has its own criteria, therefore, it is imperative that the correct form is completed.

Please note that your online registration is an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST ONLY and MUST be approved by the child's school. In order for the child to attend the nominated trial or event, this may come down to the discretion of the school as to who is selected to attend the trial. In some sports, only 2 students per school can be nominated.  All fields and especially “Representative Experience” MUST be completed. Under no circumstances will a child be eligible to trial if the Online Registration Form has not been completed and approved by the school by the closing date.

2020 School Travel Applications Now Open

To assist with any enquiries you may receive regarding student travel applications, we have provided some information below.

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.

Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

·       are continuing at the same school

·       are residing at the same address

·       have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.

Students residing in Rural and Regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the commencement of the new school year from their nominated operator, this may be distributed via the school or sent direct to their address. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/Parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

School travel application endorsements

It is not uncommon for applicants completing the online form to make mistakes, particularly entering their name or date of birth instead of the students. This may be due to an auto-fill function on a device or just human error. We ask that school administrators pay special attention to the information supplied by applicants which come through in the school portal. If the information supplied does not match your records or the student is not yet enrolled, please do not endorse the application. By selecting ‘no’ the application will be referred back to the applicant to correct and resubmit.

In the event that school administrators endorse in error, it would be appreciated if you could advise our SSTS team as soon as possible so the application can be intercepted before an Opal card or travel pass is issued.

To contact us about an endorsement error, please go to: https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback and select feedback about: ‘school student transport scheme’ and then select ‘application updates’.

If school administrators require access to the school portal to endorse student applications, please request an account at https://appln.transport.nsw.gov.au/portal/requests/account/school

If you have staff that have left the school recently and had access to the school portal, please let us know at https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback and select ‘school/operator portal’ and then ‘remove existing user access’ so their access can be removed.

Sydney Light Rail update

The new Sydney Light Rail is due to open in December 2019. This means that students will be able to travel by light rail between Circular Quay and Randwick Junction (the Kingsford branch is due to open in March 2020).

From Monday, 14 October 2019, applicants will be able to select light rail as a mode for new applications. Eligible students will be able to travel for free to and from school or college on the new Sydney Light Rail from the beginning of the 2020 school year.

For students currently travelling on a School Opal card under the SSTS, there is no change. Students will still be able to tap on and off to travel on any mode of transport to get to or from school or college.

The Sydney Light Rail team will be in contact with schools in the area to provide further information.

Quakers Hill Immaculate IMPS Playgroup

We are very lucky to have a playgroup right here at Mary Immaculate Primary School! Our playgroup caters for children from 0-6 years of age.

Playgroup is a FUN way for you and your children to meet others, share and learn through play in an ideal environment through spontaneous unstructured play.

Playgroup NSW Community Playgroups are run by families for families, which means that they reflect the needs of the families in the community hence there are no paid workers, allowing the Playgroups to represent the needs and philosophies of the attending families.

Spontaneous unstructured play is a very important part of a child’s development. It allows them to increase their problem solving skills, develop their language and social skills by modelling other children and adults, develop an understanding of size, shape and texture, develop their imagination which is very important for healthy brain development, and master skills that will help develop self-confidence and the ability to recover quickly from setbacks.

If you would like to come for a visit please see our contact details below.
