Eastlakes Edition

Term Week

Acknowledgement to Country

On behalf of the students, teachers and parents of Eastlakes Public School, we would like to pay our respects and acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, past, present and future who have the first connection to this land.

We are thankful for the Gadigal and Kameygal clans for taking care of the land, sky and waterways on which we learn and play today.

Together we will rise to the challenge and be respectful andresponsible to care for our country.

Always was, always will be Aboriginal land

From the Principal

So much has been happening these last couple of weeks at EPS. We celebrated Book Week last week with the Book Fair, Book Character Parade and the Book Week competition. This week a group Stage 2 and 3 students participated in the DanceSport Gala at the Quaycentre in Homebush. The P&C ran a Fathers Day stall which was very successful. Enjoy the photos from these events below.

Sydney East Athletics Carnival Championships

Congratulations to Monon in 6-5G, Suhana in 6-5S and Mathi in 4-3M who have progressed to the Sydney East Carnival. We are very proud of you and wish you well at the regional carnival!

Collecting children early from school for appointments

Where ever possible, appointments (medical, dental and specialist) must be made outside of school hours. When students leave early from school they are missing out on learning time, it's important that children are at school for the whole day.

Coming next week: SAS Recognition Week

Coming up next week is SAS Recognition Week. This is a week we celebrate the contributions of our administrative staff, general assistant and school learning support officers make to the school. We all know how important these people are in supporting the teachers, students and families. Teachers and students will be doing something special for our SAS staff next week.

Bayside Spring Fair

On Saturday 10th September, our school will have a stall at the Bayside Spring Fair at Jack Mundey Reserve. The Spring Fair celebrates the cultural diversity in the Bayside community with delicious foods, arts and crafts, live music and information stalls about local services and opportunities. We hope to see families there.

Australia's Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL)

It’s all about boundaries and body parts! In Australia, 96% of abused children are abused by someone known and trusted by them.

ABCSL will explore concepts of personal safety and removing the secrecy, stigma and mystery around private body parts, while also teaching children about body ownership. These lessons are an easy way that we can all help to keep kids safe.

ABCSL will be on Tuesday 6 September, during National Child Protection Week and is proudly produced by Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Students will watch the live stream starting at 9am AEST for early years and lower primary students and 10am AEST for upper primary students.

Attendance

Improving attendance continues to be a key focus in our school. Section 22 of the Education Act (1990) establishes that parents of children of compulsory school age are legally responsible for their regular attendance at school. Schools have a major responsibility for supporting parents by implementing appropriate procedures for promoting and monitoring attendance.

Students are expected to attend all school activities, on time, every day the school is open. Regular attendance helps your child:

  • Develop the skills needed to access the world of work and other opportunities

  • Learn the importance of punctuality and routine

  • Make and keep friendships.

Parents and carers have a responsibility to:

  • Send their child/children to school every day the school is open
  • Provide satisfactory explanation when a child is absent from school within seven days of the first day of absence. Letters, medical certificate, email, phone call, eForm from Skoolbag, verbal communication with teacher are all acceptable ways to explain absences.

      • Ensure their child is at school on time every day. Accompany the child to the front office if late and provide reason for lateness.
      • Report to the office to obtain early leavers pass prior to picking up their child and provide reason for early departure.

        • Apply for extended leave no less than 5  weeks in advance or make an appointment with principal if there are extenuating circumstances. Obtain extended leave from the office. Return forms to school, with relevant documentation i.e. e-tickets and or itinerary for processing. Parents carry certificate of extended leave –travel with travel documents while travelling

        PBL Raffle Tickets

We have started a targeted refocus on teaching and supporting Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) expectations: responsible, respectful, learners to create calm, orderly and engaging school environment.

Last week we began a PBL raffle where students can be awarded a raffle ticket for demonstrating positive behaviour such as  standing/sitting still in class lines, looking and listening to the teacher on the microphone, facing the front, and wearing a hat when lining up at 9am, at the end of recess and lunch. Students will have a chance to win a prize on Friday if their name gets drawn. All raffle tickets will go into an end of term raffle draw for an end of term prize.
