Term 4 Week 5

Principal’s Message

Welcome to Week 5 – this term is going so fast.

I remind everyone to take time to enjoy all the activities and events that we have approaching over the coming weeks and refer back to the analogy of running a marathon and not a sprint.

I had the privilege last week to attend the Australian Primary Principals Association Conference in Sydney and hear from several keynote speakers about leadership and management at a time of change and challenge in schools. The messages shared were around resilience in leadership, challenge in authentic decision making and embracing a culture of innovation and improvement for an ever changing future.

Parent Chats

We want to gauge parent and carer voice as the year comes to a close and we begin preparing for 2023.

I will be hosting parent chats in the school hall and library where we will discuss in an open forum what parents see as the strengths of the school, areas for improvements, school values and projections into the future. Our home school partnership is incredibly important for our students’ learning and these chats will serve to gather information to assist with planning for future goals for Dudley PS.

I’m looking forward to chatting with you at these 1 hour sessions.

· Tuesday 15 November (9:15am-10:15am or 2:00pm – 3:00pm) – School Hall

· Thursday 17 November (9:15am-10:15am or 2:00pm – 3:00pm) – School Hall

· Monday 21 November (6:00pm – 7:00pm) – Library. This session will be followed by a P&C meeting which all parents and carers are welcome to attend.

Please register using this link: https://forms.office.com/r/bK4UPbjUkG

So far we have 21 parents who have registered for the sessions. We would love to see more. Come along and be an active voice in the community for the improvement and innovation of our school.

Student Achievement – Teacher Thanks

We recognise that school is more than just reading, writing and arithmetic for our students. Our staff are committed to ensuring the development of the whole child for each individual student that wears the Dudley uniform. This commitment and dedication is shown through the provision of many extra opportunities provided to students outside the regular classroom to achieve. This includes Game Changers, debates, dance groups, excursions, sports gala days, orientation and transition programs, assembly performances and the list goes on.

I want to thank the teachers who give themselves completely to ensuring that students have these opportunities on top of their workloads in planning and program their class lessons, assessments and student reports. This time of year is extremely busy for teachers and We really appreciate all staff going above and beyond to make sure our Dudley students do not miss out.

Community Events

As we approach the end of the year there will be a few opportunities to come together as a school community and celebrate success, achievement and community spirit.

These include:

· P&C Christmas Market – November 26

· Community Carols Evening – December 1

· Presentation Day – December 8

· Kindergarten Graduation – December 9

· Year 6 Farewell – December 15

More information regarding these events will be coming home in the coming weeks.  We look forward to joining with our school community and reflecting on the success and celebration of Dudley Public School 2022.

Remember to keep abreast of the latest communications from school by enabling notifications on your phone with our Skoolbag app, seeing our successes and celebrations on Facebook and reading our fortnightly newsletter. This will ensure you don’t miss any key information coming home over the next few weeks about all of our end of year events and activities.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

Kind Regards,

Chad Tsakissiris

Principal

Grandparent's Day and Art Exhibition

On Thursday 28th October we had our annual Grandparent’s Day Assembly, followed by a picnic lunch, followed by a whole school art exhibition showcasing our amazing creations from Creative Arts Day. A huge thank you to everyone who came throughout the day. It was so special being able to share our K-2 Choir, our amazing Year 6 running a fundraising cake stall and our artwork made with so much love and support from class parents. Thank you to all staff for their hard work and organisation throughout the day. It was truly appreciated by all who came.

Kindergarten Orientations - getting ready for 2023!

Last Wednesday saw us run the final of our 3 Kindergarten Orientations sessions for 2023. What a beautiful cohort of children we have joining our school next year. We can already see special friendships forming between them and lovely memories being made. A huge thank you to our amazing Year 5 buddies who have played such an important role in getting our little ones settled and truly excited about starting at ‘big school’! Buddies you were amazing and we thank you for being such excellent role models to our new young friends.

Update on Department of Education 'starting school' information.... We are expecting to receive this anytime now. Information bags will be delivered to homes or sent home with older siblings. We apologise for this delay, but please know that there's nothing urgent in these packs. It's more general 'starting school' information.

Game Changers!

Our Game Changers team, the Coastal Creators, have travelled down to Parramatta this week to compete in the grand final event. Students have been guided through design thinking processes and problem-solving tasks to create a solution for a real-world problem. They have been working with and competing against 36 schools from across to NSW and have been having a lot of fun at the same time. They have even spoken to experts from Google, Canva and HP to help them with their incredible idea. We are all wishing them the best of luck for their final day today!

Home Reading

With just over five weeks of the school year remaining, we thank all our wonderful parents and carers who have supported our home reading program in 2022.

To track the progress that our students have made throughout the year, we ask that all home reading logs are up to date, signed off and returned to school where possible (for Infants classes, this is every Monday).

With all students working towards their own personal home reading goals, we look forward to celebrating these achievements in the coming weeks!

Library

What a busy year we have had here in the library.

This term students have been learning to code using Block code and creating programs to use with Dash, Bluebots and Microbits.

It is wonderful to see them working together, problem solving and exploring their world through technology.

Book Club Issue 7 Orders have arrived at school and will be sent home by the end of this week.

That was the last Book Club for this year.

Thank you to all families who support it, every purchase earns rewards for our library.

We have been able to purchase lots of new books using the rewards from Book Club and of course the hugely successful book fair during Book Week.

Students have loved discovering new favourites and rediscovering old ones during library sessions.

Stock take

As the end of term approaches, I am preparing for stock take.

The last week for borrowing will be week seven with all books expected to be returned by the end of week eight.

Please return all overdue books to the library as soon as possible. Overdue notices will be sent out next week, if you think a book has already been returned, your child is welcome to pop in to the library during lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and I can assist them to look for it.

STATE ATHLETICS

In week 2, we had an astounding 6 students attend the 2022 State Athletics Carnival at Homebush.

The students raced hard and fair and were cheered on via the live link back here at school by many of their peers.

The results were as follows:

Barnaby H competed in the Senior Boys 1500m event and finished 7th with a time of 4.52min.

Mollie W competed in the 11 year girls 1500m (33rd) and the 800m (6th in heat) with time of 6.01min and 2.50min respectively.

Kalani B, Aluka Y, Sahara A and Isla W competed in the Junior Girls Relay Team and finished 27th with a time of 1.04min and finishing 27th in the state.

We are so proud of these incredible athletes and can't wait to see what the next years bring!

Well done!

Year 2 League Tag Gala Day

Yesterday, Dudley were lucky enough to be invited to take part in a Stage 1 League Tag Gala Day. We were offered spots for 20 students, but ended up taking 27 super keen Year 2, who literally played their hearts out all day. Once again, I'd like to thank the parents who helped transport all 27 students there and back to school. Thank you for supporting us from the fence line and helping to supervise throughout the day whilst teachers and staff were off coaching teams. It couldn’t have happened without you.

Well done to all those students who participated in this event. I am so proud of your teamwork, your healthy sporting attitudes and the way you conducted yourselves throughout the day. Mr Kelly, Jared and I are so proud of you all!

Sustainability

Garbage Guardians – Our Garbage Guardians are always on the lookout for students doing the right thing.

Congratulations to our most recent prize winner, Molly S in 1F, for showing a thorough understanding of our bin system, picking up rubbish in the playground and being a fabulous helper at Garden Club.

Well done, Molly!

National Recycling Week – National Recycling Week was established by Planet Ark in 1996 and is held every year during the second week of November.

This year, National Recycling Week explores the idea that Waste isn't Waste until it's Wasted.

There is also a focus on quality over quantity, it is not about recycling more, but recycling better. Reducing our waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill, but it also benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

A huge thanks to all our special helpers yesterday who celebrated National Recycling Week by creating signage, picking up rubbish from the playground and placing it in the correct recycling bins.

Garden Club – Isn't Spring lovely!

The garden is in full bloom at the moment.

We've savoured some tasty strawberries and the lettuce is looking delicious.

Thanks to our busy bees who help take care of our beautiful space each week. We even spotted some native bees buzzing around the strawberry flowers.

Our P&C delivered some valuable equipment last week with a new hose reel, hose and water saving spray nozzle.

The older members of our group did a fabulous job assembling the hose reel, with just a little help from Miss Kat.

Thank you Harry and Harrison - you've done a fabulous job!

Primary Ethics Training in Newcastle

The Primary Ethics curriculum is an extraordinary platform to facilitate fascinating conversations with school children, and nurture leadership qualities such as empathy and analysis.

It’s a 30-minute commitment per week during school terms. The training is very enjoyable and is also available via Zoom if in-person training or the dates don’t suit.

Training is open for parents, grandparents, and other community members.
