Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Week 1

Principal Updates

Welcome back to Term 3!

I hope everyone managed to make the most of the fabulous dry season weather and relax, go adventuring, spend time with family and friends, even go travelling. I took 2 weeks off and certainly made the most of the more relaxed pace of life and catching up with people and all those chores that build up over term time.

We are all back on deck and ready for a  focused and productive term at school. Class teachers will be emailing home letters outlining their focus areas for the term within the next week.

Special events coming up include:

  • Performing arts program [starting next week] which will culminate in our annual community performance night on 1st September
  • Year 3/4 Camp for 2 days 8th and 9th September
  • Student Led Conferences 13th & 14th September

Reports

As the majority of you are aware reports were emailed home in the last week of term. We do apologize for the technical issues where some appeared not to get through. If you did not receive your child's report please contact the front office and we will ensure this gets to you ASAP. If you have any concerns or queries about the reports please make contact with your child's class teacher.

Children will all be reviewing their data from last term and identifying their learning goals within the next few weeks and developing action plans for achieving these. Please take the time to ask them about this at home.

Attendance

Our attendance continues to be of concern - too many students missing time off school when not unwell. Please see information further in the newsletter about this and we seriously ask that all families consider anytime off school for reasons other than illness as this does impact the learning opportunities for your child.

Have a terrific week and enjoy the extra day off this Friday

Cheers

Sandy Cartwright [Principal]

Assistant Principal Update

To our Alawa school community,

I hope you have all had a very restful break and are now ready for Term 3. This is usually the term where students have a very clear understanding of expectations and routines in the classroom and all students can hit the ground running. I am looking forward to seeing some wonderful learning, with Dance, Art and Inquiry opportunities in all classes.

Music: Our music lessons will resume this Friday. It was terrific to see our students playing a variety of instruments in a mini performance in front of some classes on the Friday of last term. The timetable will remain the same as last term.

Playgroup will begin again next week. Maria does a wonderful job organising these sessions and the children enjoy visits to the farm, cooking and exploring the playground in the Preschool area. We hope to see families that intend to start their children at Alawa next year take this opportunity to familiarise themselves with this space and begin to form friendships.

Professional learning: All staff were involved in our Professional Learning Day on Monday. We appreciate the support of our whole school community to allow us the opportunity to have these days. They are crucial in allowing us to collaborate together and further develop our knowledge and skills around delivering quality Curriculum here at Alawa.

I am looking forward to a fantastic term with some terrific events that our teachers and volunteers will be organising.

Kind regards

Gen Donohue [Assistant Principal]

Have you read the newsletter this week: A quick question

NED's Mindset Mission

Our school is hosting NED’s Mindset Mission, a live streaming school

event. An engaging performer takes our students on an interactive

educational journey filled with storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humour.

NED’s message and memorable friends inspire students, promote academic

achievement, and support our school goals.

Never give up Encourage others Do your best®

Our school received this programme at no-cost because another school community has paid-it-forward to us. Now it’s our turn—you can help by purchasing a NED-messaged yo-yo and accessories. A yo-yo is both a mindset tool and tangible reminder of NED’s message. While learning to yo, children will make mistakes, try again, and improve. Read more at www.MindsetMission.com/yoyos

*Items will be on sale at the front office from 25th July-8th August.

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 10 of Term 2 was....Year 3 Block with 153 points!!!

Winner for Week 10 is 3 Block with 153 points.

Winner for Term 2....also 3 Block with 1137 points!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 10 of Term 2 Manton was ahead of Finnis and Goyder with 6287 points!!!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 60075 points!!!

Attendance: Term 2 at Alawa

As can be seen from the graph to the side we had 45% of our students attend less than 90% last term - this is very serious and detrimental to the students learning.

In fact we even had 18% attend less than 80% - this means 57 children missed more than 10 days of school through the term. Now we know COVID and Influenza was a significant contributor to these statistics - they are not the full story.

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 10 Term 2: 87.71%

The class with the highest attendance for Week 10: Year 1 Bullock with 97.39%!!!

Winners for Term 2.....Year 2 Riley-Smith with 91.602%!!! Amazing job!!!

They will be sharing a pizza lunch Thursday 21st July.

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 42 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 10 Term 2!

For Week 10 the classes with the least lates were: Year 4/5 Griffin and Year 5/6 Henderson with 0 lates each!!!

In the lead for the term we have....Preschool Red Group with 1 late!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Defence School Mentor news

Welcome back to Term 3. It is always so lovely to come back to school after the break and see all of the smiling faces and feel the excitement the students have to be back at school.

Yesterday I spent part of my day visiting classrooms and reconnecting with the Defence students. I loved hearing about what everyone did over the break and what they are looking forward to this term, the Whole School Performance is a hot favourite.

As we all know June/July is the time that Posting Orders start to filter out. If you know that your family is leaving us at the end of this year onto a new location if you could let the school or myself know that would be appreciated. This way I can begin to support your child through the preparation of the move. I also have some handy info sheets on how to support children through a posting. If you would like copies please let me know. Also remember that the DMFS website has some great posting info and tips too.
