From the Principal's Desk

Stronger Smarter

Since becoming the Principal of SGHS, I have had the opportunity to be involved with some extraordinary professional learning and this week has been no exception. I have been immersed in a program called “Stronger Smarter”. Its values and philosophies have challenged me to think carefully about all aspects of the culture in our school. I know, from firsthand experience, that the culture at SGHS is strong and positive, we are a very good school. However, we cannot rest on our laurels. We need to be working towards a culture of high expectations relationships, a culture in which every student is hungry to learn and a culture in which all students are proud of their heritage. These are our challenges if we are to move from being a very good school to be a great school.

School Social

School socials are an important part of the fabric of our school and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and SRC who organised the event on Wednesday night. I have been told that the students had a great time and that some of the staff who supervised even enjoyed the choice of music, busting out some moves. Thank you very much for giving up your evening and enabling this event to happen.

Uniforms

This has been a difficult term in relation to uniforms because we have had limited supplies of the new style clothing. Now that the new stock has arrived, all students need to be in uniform every day. If you need financial assistance to purchase new uniforms, please contact the school. Remember also that the old-style uniforms are still acceptable. If we are to function efficiently as a school, we need to look like a school and that means we all need to be in uniform.

Tell Them From Me Survey

We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available by clicking on the below link.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 21 March and 12 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by 21/03/2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available by clicking on the below link.

Community News

Clarence Valley Youth Forum 2019, 10th April 9:30-11:30am. The New School of Arts, South Grafton

The aim of the youth forum is to have a diverse representation of young people aged 12-24 years from across the Clarence Valley to be a voice for young people within our community.

Our Youth Interagency needs youth input to into programs, policies and practices that affect young people directly.

We want to know what kind of community young people want to live in and why it matters to them. We want to hear their aspirations, ideas, challenges and the key issues and barriers to progress that affect young people from their perspective.

The forum is developed on a Harwood Community Conversation Model and takes approximately 90 minutes. Free morning tea will be provided to all participants.

If interested in participating in the forum please see Mrs Dewberry ASAP to register.
