From The RE Leader - Peter Sanderson

Solidarity

We are one ‘body’.  When one suffers, we all suffer.  Our responsibilities to each other cross national, racial, economic and ideological differences.  We are called to work with those who struggle, we are called to work with those who work for justice.

St Matthew, in his gospel, writes, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Matthew wrote for a Jewish community – not necessarily poor – therefore scripture scholars believe this needs to be adjusted a little. Scholars now suggest he’s saying “Blessed are those of you who make the poor your concern, blessed are you who stand with the poor.  Matthew is affirming those in his community who, although not materially poor, stand in solidarity with those who are. Poor in spirit is aligning oneself with the poor and fighting for their interests.

Parish Cards

The Parish Card Group that has been running for many years in our Parish Hall, recently announced that they are ceasing operation due to low numbers. Since 2008 this group has donated their annual takings to our school which we have used to purchase books for our library. Over the course of these years this has amounted to over $26000. We sincerely thank this group and, in particular, Mary Farley, for their generous consideration of our school.

Kind regards,

Sue Paulka

Year 5/6F Class Report

Year 5/6 History Walk With Glen Foster

Last Tuesday 28th May the Year 5/6 students went on a history walk with Glen Foster aka “William Osbourne”. The history walk links with our Inquiry as we are learning about Australia’s immigration history. We are talking about important dates in Australia’s history, for example: The Gold Rush, The Irish Potato Famine, Convicts, Free settlers and so much more. We started our tour at the YHA in Cox Street Port Fairy.  I learnt that the Mill House is one of the oldest houses in Victoria. It was good fun and I learnt a lot.   Poppy Myers

My character's was James Reibly. We did a role play and we each had a character who was important to Port Fairy. We learnt about how people were treated and how they acted towards each other. It also gave us an idea of what Port Fairy was like back in the 1800s. We went to the wharf, the courthouse and 2 old houses.  Hannah McCrohan

What did we learn about Port Fairy? I actually learnt lots of new things but my favourite thing was how I stood in front of the oldest house in Victoria. I didn't even know that the oldest house in Victoria was in Port Fairy!!  Also, I learnt about the museum, which was a courthouse back in the 1800s. Now I want to go inside that building!  Mia Hetherington

We are looking for someone who is available to do Meals on Wheels on Thursday June 20.

If you are available please contact the school office.
