This term we have transformed out school Tree House into a sacred space for our liturgical celebrations. The classes have done a wonderful job of putting the space together in such a way to promote prayer within our community. We have been pleased to have Fr Fred join us for our celebrations since his return from Malta especially the Ash Wednesday Mass which marked the start of Lent. This year we held both an R-2 Liturgy and 3-6 Mass which worked well and allowed the students to have a more intimate interaction with the occasion. It has been pleasing to see the range of learning experiences which classes have also been undertaking to deepen the students understanding of this part of the liturgical calendar.
Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of St Catherine’s,
Thanks to all of you who attended the recent AGM and tours of our Building site, St Catherine’s certainly has a lot to celebrate in regard to learning and a lot to look forward to as a community with this new facility. You may have seen the cement trucks on site Wednesday morning this week when you arrived signalling more progress with the slab being poured for the classrooms.
It has been a challenging week with the cancellation of many school events in responding proactively to Covid19. We will endeavour to reschedule these events in due course and when it safe to do so for the community. Meanwhile teachers continue to remind students about good hygiene and in particular correct techniques for and regular washing of hands. You will notice posters in classrooms as visual reminders of this. Staff are also regularly washing tabletops and have Glen 20 for surfaces, door handles and the like. Hand sanitizer is also available in classrooms. If your child is unwell please keep them at home so that we can limit the spread of infection. This week a letter has also gone home in regard to arrangements for those who are self isolating due to Covid19 or should there be a short term school closure due to Covid19. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with these arrangements.
Last Friday we had our annual Sports Day which was a great success thanks to Steven De Giovanniello’s organisation of this event. Students enjoyed the variety of activities and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day cheering each other on, participating in team chants and creating the moves for the Health Hussle. Congratulations to our overall winners Yellow team (Dominic) and Spirit Cup recipients Blue (St Catherine’s). It was fantastic to see so many parents and grandparents joining in with the day. Special thanks also to the Parents and Friends for coordinating the BBQ, drinks and cake stall.
On Sunday many families and staff attended the Parish Picnic at the Oakbank Race Course where Fr Fred celebrated Mass assisted by 3 /4 L and R/1 TD and the Youth group led us in singing the hymns of the day. The children enjoyed playing together on the Bouncy Castle and having their faces painted by the Face painter. Thank you to all of the St Catherine’s families and Parish members who made this such an enjoyable event.
Next Term all students at St Catherine’s will participate in the P.E.A.C.E. Pack Program created by Phillip Slee at Flinders University. This 8-week intervention program is designed for schools and classrooms from reception to Year 12.to teach students and staff about how to stop bullying, how to deal with bullying when it occurs, how to make students feel safe at school, and how to reduce the likelihood of students joining in bullying of others. The acronym can be broken down to:
· Preparation and consideration of the nature of bullying
· Education and understanding of the issues
· Action taken and strategies developed to reduce bullying
· Coping strategies for staff, students and parents
· Evaluation, review and celebration of the program
Melinda James and Kelly Ann Kirby will lead the implementation of this project and in the coming weeks will attend Professional Learning about the program and then share this learning with the rest of the staff. More information will be shared with families in regard to this program by individual classes next term.
During week 10 we had intended to hold Parent Teacher Interviews. Unfortunately due to advice in regard to Covid19 these interviews will now not go ahead as planned. If you would like to speak with your child’s class teacher about their learning then this would be possible via phone. Please contact teachers individually if you wish to speak with them.
Finally, in these challenging times a thought to ponder: when something bad happens you have three choices you can let it define you, let it destroy you or let it strengthen you. Remember to create joy and strength of purpose in all you do.
God Bless,
Erika Dixon
