From the Principal

Another action-packed week at OLSH. We continue to be affected with blackouts, water supply issues and network connectivity. Regardless, teaching and learning continues.

OLSH was blessed to have Archbishop Rochus Tatamai lead the Mass on Thursday morning.  The Archbishop has had some health issues which had limited his ability to visit Kavieng.  He reported to me he is feeling better. Please continue to pray for the Archbishop for wisdom and good health as he undertakes a demanding schedule of work.

During the Mass the Archbishop acknowledged the good things that have been happening at OLSH in the past year. In focusing on Easter and the time of Lent, he encouraged those attending to reflect on the meanings and make adjustments to daily living in order to live a rewarding and fulfilling life.

Next Wednesday 22 March is our Grade 7 – 12 Parents as Partners meeting at 4:30pm. Please come along and meet with your child’s teachers to discuss their progress.

Should you have any questions or concerns you might like to discuss, please contact the Reception and you can be directed to the appropriate staff member to assist you.

A reminder, with the end of Term being not far off. Term 2 will follow closely and that means, if you pay school fees by instalments, School fees are due before the second Friday of Term 2 (05 MAY). To assist the cash flow of the school and avoid us having to chase payment or exclude students from school, please budget accordingly.

Best regards,

Mr Geoff Jackson

Year 10 Retreat: Reflections by class prefects

Our Year 10 Retreat was the best, because we had fun with our supervisors (Mr Rangatin & Ms Kanaka) but most of all we learnt a lot from Sister Ancilla, on our theme “To be the heart of God on Earth.”

A short message from us to you on what I have learnt is that Jesus loves us so much that he gave his life that we may live so we must do the same by paying bad things with good things and being good to others.

Year 9 Science by Kalylah Avuchulas

In our science class, Ms John has gone by the different topics which were both familiar and unfamiliar to us.

We started off by looking at the Indigenous. In this unit we’ve gone through the types of knowledge, sustaining resources and knowledge systems and usefulness. After finishing off from this unit (9.1), we moved onto Air (unit 9.2) which was on ‘Working Scientifically’. The topics that came under are:

  • Measurement, where we drew up a table of the ‘old’ unit of measurement and the ‘imperial system’.
  • We’ve also gone through the ‘Imperial System of Units’ (SI System), measuring using instruments in this topic. We enjoyed this because we got to measure longer distances and irregular objects using scientific equipment such as the trundle wheel (measuring longer distances) and measuring cylinder (measuring volume) in class.
  • Reliability and accuracy in taking measurements, this is where we learned how to take good measurements and that it is important to be accurate and consistent when taking measurements.
  • We had previously been on our new topic, Investigative Processes. We had gone through the scientific approach (way of working), safe use of apparatus and instruments, how to use a Bunsen burner and the steps in lighting it, safety equipment and the rules in science, safety signals, warning signs and as of yesterday, learning the steps in the investigative process and how to carry out an investigation.

I have basically explained what the Year 9 class have been learning this year and that we are enjoying science and appreciate Ms John for teaching us what we have learned and what we still have to learn.

Let us all encourage our students, your child or children to take pride in their appearance and presentation

Home Study Expectations

OLSH Expected study hours continues during the holidays as your child needs to be regularly applying themselves at home in revising and studying the concepts covered in school. Holiday work will be provided to students. Please help your child to develop a holiday study schedule that meets the OLSH expected study hours.

Let us all work together to help your child achieve the best possible result this semester.
