Issue 2019 / 12

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Congratulations

In our annual Principal’s Academic Awards Assembly last week, we acknowledged the academic achievements of the top 3 place getters in each level of Years 7-11 in the College and Grammar School, together with the top 2 place getters in Years 5 and 6. To attain such results requires commitment, tenacity, engagement and ensuring that areas of uncertainty are addressed. The students, whose names appear in the attachment below, were given an academic badge to be worn proudly on their blazer; white for Stage 3, red for Stages 4 and 5, and blue for Stage 6.

Whilst I am very proud of these students, I urge those students who perhaps are closing in on the ranks of a top performance, to push themselves just that little bit more in the semester ahead. Importantly too, I encourage every student to give of their best; to feel at the end of the 2019 academic year, that they have done their utmost to take on board the E of our Core Values; the E of HEROIC, for excellence Thus, I put out the challenge to every student; be proud to achieve at the highest level of which you are capable.

Year 10 Head to the Alps...

Adventure education, one of the key components of our Pittwater House offering, comes to the fore for the Year 10 cohort this week. As the famed educator Dr Kurt Hahn of Scotland’s Gordonstoun, and the Outward-Bound movement wrote:

“There exists within everyone a grand passion, an outlandish thirst for adventure, a desire to live boldly and vividly through the journey of life”

The development of confidence and competence in an outdoor setting, promoting independence and resilience and self-reliance are all part of our developmental program that begins in Year 3; experiential learning at its finest.  What comes from this week where the Year 10 cohort will be together, is companionship brought by conquering challenges and a loyalty to your group or team. It is learning beyond the classrooms of Collaroy, embracing the natural wonder and beauty of the alpine region and developing further the skills and knowledge gleaned in year group camps of the past years. For as Kurt Hahn noted too, “there is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.” Students may find themselves daunted by the challenge ahead, saying they can’t do it… and when they do, they are immensely proud of their achievement. And rightly so. This opportunity for personal growth is an outstanding way to put together all the skills learned and prepare the students for their final two years of senior schooling.

Year 12 Trial Examinations

This is a demanding week for our HSC students as they sit their trial examinations. In a change to the assessment structure for all NSW schools, students now have no examination period until this time in their course. With students of Multimedia, Design and Technology and Visual Arts having their completed works on display last week, we were all able to appreciate the enormous work these students have put into their practical subjects.

To all HSC students, every good wish for the coming examination period.

From the Past Week...

It was a fast paced U18 Boys Soccer final against St Pauls that saw Pittwater House in the runner-up position. The boys have had a marvellous season and with the majority of the team back for their Year 12 studies in 2020, they are highly motivated to turn this result around in 12-months’ time.

So nice to see students make the most of our campus as they find places to study in small groups. Whether students are preparing a group presentation for English or a dialogue for their language studies, rarely a day goes by without my seeing this approach around our grounds.

Alumni Gather

It is wonderful to be kept up to date with the opportunities and pathways of our Alumni. Two members of the Class of 2014 met up in London last week. Edward Dennison is now living in the UK (Brighton) and has secured a graduate traineeship with KPMG starting this September. He will be with their Audit Division and will gain his Accountancy qualification as part of the program. Edward completed his degree at the ANU last year, being at the forefront of an increasing number of our students who decide on the move to Canberra for their tertiary studies. And Head Prefect from 2014, Sebastian Davies Mills is also in London doing a summer school course at the prestigious London School of Economics. Sebastian is well through his Law degree at UTS and concurrently working in a Sydney legal firm.

With every good wish for the week ahead.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

From the Head of Junior School

The opportunity to meet with the class teacher in the post report period is vital and I urge any parent who did not take the opportunity in Week 2 to meet with their child’s class teacher to make an appointment to do so. Goal setting for Semester 2 is a great collaborative exercise between the teacher and parent, keeping the lines of communication open and future learning as the shared focus.

Congratulations were bestowed upon our top two Academic Achievers for Stage 3 for Semester 1 in Week 1, at the Principal’s Academic Awards Assembly. Adele and Narayani were recognised for their achievement in J6, and in J5, Lydia and Kate were acknowledged. Sina and Nicholas from P6, as well as Nehan and Henry from P5 were also congratulated. This academic rigour and friendly classmate rivalry augurs well for the future.

It is with pleasure that we also congratulate Natasha and Jack Roberts on the birth of their beautiful addition to the family, Ella Rose. Ella was born over the holiday break and is bringing much joy to her parents.

The K-2 students and teachers inspired by the Hackman family, Ethan in PK and Miles in the ECC have determined to collect plastic bottle tops for the Envision Hands Charity. The students’ efforts will not only help children who have lost limbs but will also be helping the environment at the same time. Please watch this video to see how prosthetic limbs can be made by recycling and reusing this plastic.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP0VcknTjJg

All children can bring their bottle caps to any of the K-2 classrooms where a collection box will be waiting to be filled.

It is with great pride that I inform you of Miss Bridget Farrell's nomination for a 2019 Award for Excellence was accepted for consideration by the Teacher’s Guild of NSW. She has been nominated for being an outstanding young teacher who has made significant contribution to the school.

Co-curricular Programs
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the wonderful co-curricular programs we have on offer run by outside agencies. There are spaces available in both programs. The O’Grady Drama class is offering a promotion for Term 3 which offers new students a 25% discount off term 3 fees if they join with a friend. The class is on a Tuesday morning from 7:30-8:15am in the Sports Centre. Please contact via: ogradydrama.com.au. Please see the attached flyer included in this edition of HouseNews. The Sydney Academy of Chess offers lessons on a Wednesday afternoon from 3:30-4:30pm in the resource room. The information flyer is also included in this edition of HouseNews

Watch out Canberra! J6 is establishing their own Parliament!

Term 3 brings an exciting activity to the classrooms of J6! As we begin our studies of Federation and Democracy, what better way to understand the workings of our government than through the creation of our own Class Parliament?! We have formed our own parties (voting for leaders, deciding on party platforms and assigning portfolios to party members) and the campaigning has commenced, as we now battle it out to win the prized position of the J6 Government.  Already the girls are showing such enthusiasm as they create posters and badges, and think about ways that they can entice those votes for their party – lolly pops, anyone?

Once our parliament has been established, we will have weekly sittings, during which ‘Acts of Parliament’ are promoted and critiqued to improve student life and our environment. This is a really fun and engaging activity that we do in Year 6, as we learn about the roles that each member of parliament plays and how our government comes to make decisions. It gives us such an advantage too, ahead of our annual trip to Canberra in Term 4, where we hope to see our Federal Parliament in session. Let the fun and games begin!

CREATIVE ARTS

From the Co-ordinator of Creative Arts

We have had an exciting start to Term 3 with a highly successful “The Ultimate Dance Challenge” on August 3. All our groups performed exceptionally well with our Stage 2, Junior Lyrical, Stage 4 and Senior Contemporary Awarded 1st Place and Stage 1 Highly Commended. Stage 3 danced extremely well in a very competitive section and received some excellent feedback form the adjudicator.

SPORT NEWS

Student Sporting Success

Congratulations to Hannah (J5), who was selected into the CIS Invitational Hockey Team which came 6th at the PSSA Hockey Championships in Newcastle in the last week of Term 2. Hannah was awarded “best and fairest” at the end of Championship. It was an amazing experience for her, and she got to play with many girls from all over the State who were in the CIS teams.

Hannah also played in the State Hockey Championships in Tamworth in the School Holidays. She was in the U11A Northern Suburbs and Beaches team who won the State Title. Well done Hannah!

Congratulations to Noah (P6), who competed at the State Pool Rescue in the Centre Coast on the 22 July and won 2 Golds Medals in Individual events. Well done Noah. Both Noah and Connor (G8) will be competing in Brisbane at Nationals in August. Good luck boys.

Congratulations Ryan (G7), who has been selected by the NSW Junior Baseball League to travel to Japan as part of an Australian team for the upcoming Triangular Series between Japan, Taiwan and Australia. He will be departing Wednesday (31/07) returning on (09/08).

During the holidays, Ryan was also a part of an Australian team that played in the PONY World Series Asia Pacific Championship in Japan, where they competed against 9 other countries, securing a silver medal in the process. During this tournament, Ryan was selected as flag bearer at the opening ceremony and with the best overall batting statistics collected the trophy on behalf of the team at the end of the tournament. Well done and good luck Ryan!

Congratulations to Gracie (C11), who competed for the Sydney Scorpions Touch Football team which competed at Junior Regionals in July in Orange in a balmy 3 degrees! Her under 16s team took out the Championship and Gracie was announced in the Merit NSW team.  It has been a big few months competing just after breaking her wrist in April, and to perform at the highest level and be recognised is a great achievement. Well done Gracie.

Congratulations to Paris (C11), for being selected into the NSW School Girls Rugby 7’s Team. Paris was the Vice-captain for the NSW Girls’ team. Good luck in your upcoming matches.

Last weekend Paris had her final trial for the UNE Lions Rugby 7s Team (University of New England) with whom she has been training twice a week and talent ID days for the last 2 months. It got down to the final invitation round last weekend where she was then told that she made the official Opens Team (players aged 18-30) out of 120 players that had been handpicked to trial, Paris was the youngest person selected. They will now play in the AON 7s Series where the Universities play one another in an Australia wide competition. This is the highest level you can make it before being selected for the Australian Rugby 7s Team. What an awesome achievement for this very talented young girl.

Congratulations to Cameron (G11), for being selected into the AICES Open Boys Soccer team which played at the CIS Championships. The AICES Team went through undefeated and took out the Championships. He was then selected into the CIS Open Boys team which played at the NSW All Schools Championships. Not only did CIS win the Championships, Cameron was also then selected into the Blue (top team) NSW All Schools U19 Squad.

Cameron has also been selected into the Joey’s Squad and attended the Training Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra during the July School Holidays.  What a great season for this talented young man. Well done Cameron.

Congratulations to Megan (C11), who participated in the ISC Water Polo Tournament, playing in the U18s NSW Blues Team. They competed against various teams up to U22s in age from Queensland, Tasmania and New Zealand and successfully took out the Gold Medal on Sunday.

Meg is currently on a talent scholarship at NSWIS and in the Born 02 AUS Squad. As well as participating in State and Nationals this year, she has attended various NSWIS and AUS Training Camps at the AIS in the last 12 months and is hoping for an International trip in the near future. Well done and congratulations Megan.
