PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

NAPLAN

I would like to wish our Year 3 and Year 5 students all the best as they sit for NAPLAN over the next two weeks. This year, NAPLAN has been moved to Term 1 to enable teachers to access the results earlier in the year to support student learning.

Curriculum Planning Days

Each term this year, stage teams will be provided with release from face-to-face teaching to jointly plan the implementation of the new curriculum. These planning days are essential to enable our teachers to fully understand and implement the new curriculum. In addition, assistant principals are being released from class one day a week to support the implementation of the new curriculum. This week, kindergarten teachers will participate in a curriculum planning on Tuesday.

International Women’s Day

On Wednesday our staff celebrated International Women’s Day. This is a day that recognises the incredible contribution that women have made in history and a celebration of the achievements that have too-often been overlooked by history.

International Women’s Day aims to generate support and solidarity for women and reduce gender disparity.

By promoting and advocating for women, we work towards creating a more gender equal world today.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures in schools

With another wave of COVID expected in March, NSW Health advise that it will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will continue to implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. People exposed to COVID-19 should follow NSW Health guidanceExternal link and test to identify infection early even if they are not experiencing any symptoms.

  • strongly encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations for students, staff and their families, including a booster shot (when eligible) and maintaining double dose vaccination requirements for staff who work in an SSP

  • good hygiene practices including regular hand washing with soap and warm water and/or use of hand sanitiser

  • maintaining natural ventilation, with consideration of local environmental circumstances

  • boosted cleaning during the day, with particular attention given to high touch surface areas
  • wearing a mask for all staff and visitors when working with or visiting Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs), support units or schools with students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19 particularly indoors and when physical distancing is not possible

  • assessing risk and applying appropriate safeguards across activities and events

COVID reporting

It is important for our community to register their positive RAT result to Service NSW to access NSW Health support including antiviral medicines if they are eligible.

LEARNING AND SUPPORT

Helping your child with the new curriculum

Curriculum implementation professional learning

On Thursday, a group of K-2 teachers and assistant principals from Drummoyne Public School met with teachers and curriculum leaders from across the state for ‘Day 1 of strategic delivery curriculum implementation’ professional learning. The focus across the 2.5 days of learning is on delivering quality learning through the new English and Mathematics K-2 syllabus using high impact strategies for teaching and assessment.

Day 1 looked at the evidence-base and criteria for selected syllabus content, the specific high impact strategy of Learning Intentions Success Criteria in writing and measurement and geometry, modeled practice and opportunities to apply to our own context, engaged in discussion groups across schools to share practice and give and receive feedback,  and designed an inquiry cycle for school-based implementation.

Ongoing professional learning is planned throughout the year to support the implementation of the new curriculum.

Moving into year 7 in a NSW Government school in 2024

Expression of Interest for Year 6 to Year 7 transition - applications are now open

Information for Year 6 Parents

In NSW Government schools, moving from primary school to high school is called the 'Year 6 to Year 7 transition'.

If you would like your child to attend a government high school in 2024, you will need to complete an expression of interest for Year 6 to 7 transition (EOI). The expression of interest lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7. After you submit this expression of interest and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a government high school.

The EOI process is now available online. Applications are now open and close on Friday 31 March.

https://year7.enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/?schoolCode=1774

If your child will not be attending a NSW Government high school next year, please let us know by completing a Placement Not Required form (PNR).

If you are unsure whether they will be attending a NSW Government school (you’ve applied for a private school, or you are moving interstate), we ask that you still complete an EOI and follow up with your school once a decision has been made.

The online process will guide you through your options and collect the information required to make the process as smooth as possible.

For parents/carers who are not able to complete an application online, a paper EOI form can be collected from the school office.

All year 6 families are asked to complete an EOI or a PNR application for their child.

For more information about moving to high school and to apply online, visit

Sydney Swans player visit

As a player myself, I really enjoyed meeting and chatting to some famous Sydney Swan players. We all got free tickets to games and autographs from Tom Papley, Joel Amartey and Ollie Florent. The players were stuck in traffic so we played together while we were waiting. It was a great afternoon.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Year 6 Leadership

Our senior students have embraced the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills. At DPS, we believe that every student has the capacity to lead - with or without a badge. As such, with teacher guidance, student committees and leadership groups are formed that align with students’ interests and abilities. Throughout the year, we will highlight our leadership groups, to shine a light on the wonderful initiatives being undertaken by our year 6 leaders.

For today, let’s meet our environmental leaders of 2023 (see photo) namely:  Jack, Douglas, Riley, Rowan, Samuel, Dante, Irelen, Tahlia, Zara and Amelia who are passionate about being positive role models for the environment of our school and local community.

They meet regularly to plan and discuss environmental issues. Some of their proposed initiatives for this year include: minimising soft plastic waste in the school, establishing specific bins for waste collection, and recording and managing the water and electricity usage within the school. Please stay tuned for updates on their progress.

Our environmental team demonstrated excellent leadership last week as they led the school in a Clean Up Australia Day initiative.

Clean Up Australia Day - Reflection

Clean Up Australia Day was so much fun last Friday, 3rd March. We helped our environment by cleaning it up!

The Year 6 environmental leaders found lots of different types of rubbish, like plastic containers (from the canteen), tissues, plastic and wooden forks and spoons, plastic lids and many other types of rubbish in the garbage bags.

We took photos of what was in those bags and we talked about where we found most of the rubbish. The environmental leaders agreed that we found most rubbish in the gardens and behind the kindy shed. Thanks to Ms Gorham, Ms O’Dowd, the environmental leaders and everyone who participated in Clean Up Australia Day!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is officially underway!

As in previous years, students in years Kindy, 1 and 2 do not have to log their reading. Their reading will be logged by Mr Neufeld in the library. Parents are welcome to add any home reading if they’d like to. Students in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 must log their own reading. Mr Neufeld will go through how to do this in library lessons over the coming weeks.

The challenge is mostly the same as in previous years, but there are a few small rule changes to let you all know about.

  1. The Challenge opened on 27 February 2023. You must complete your online Student Reading Record by 18 August 2023 (11:59 pm) to complete the Challenge.
  2. The total number of books students must read remains the same, but now students can read up to 10 personal choice books (books NOT on the PRC list), up from 5 last year.

3. In an approved series on the PRC booklist, you can read any 5 books as PRC books (previously, only 3). You can read up to ten other books from the same series as Personal Choice books.

The best way to access the PRC website is through the student portal.

Happy reading!

Mr Neufeld

GENERAL NEWS

2023 school travel applications are now open

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023, can now apply.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

For further details please see the attachment below.

OFFICE NEWS

Please label everything!

Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.

Please use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels, go through your child’s bag with them regularly and check that labels haven’t faded with washing.

Medication at school

For new students who require medication to be administered at school, all instructions and medications need to be handed in to the office.

To support this process and ensure the dosage is correct and medicine is stored securely, please complete the “Request for administration of prescribed medication to a student” form and hand in at the office with the medicine.  The form is available from the school office and can also be found on our school website.

No student should keep medication in their bags. Thank you for supporting the health and safety of all students.

For returning students, any changes to medication should also be directed to the office.

SMS Messaging

In an effort to make it easier for parents to notify the school of a student absence, we are using SMS messaging. At 10am each morning, if your child has been marked absent, you will receive an SMS message to your phone. You will then be able to respond via return SMS, phonecall, email or reply via Skoolbag with the reason for your child's absence.

If you have documentation supporting the absence (such as a medical certificate or negative COVID test result), please send it to school with your child when they return.

Thank you all our wonderful volunteers. We have managed to find a class parent for nearly all 20 classes!

We still need a volunter for classes KY, 3/4W & 5/6O

The P&C are looking to assign one Class Parent per class, as a point of contact between the P&C and the wider school community. School parent Angela Farrell will be coordinating all the class parents this year.

What does a Class Parent do?

  • Set up a WhatsApp group for their class (with our help!)
  • Forward important messages and date reminders from the Class Parent coordinator to their class (only a few times per term)

What are the benefits of being a class parent?

  • Be the first to know what’s going on!
  • You get to know more parents in your class
  • You can do the role from your phone!

If you are interested in being a class parent this year, please add your name to this google form:
