The Delany community

We are very conscious that our Delany community is placed in the centre of a number of positive COVID-19 cases during the past weeks.  We are blessed, and somewhat lucky, to have avoided a case here at school.  I expect that the closures of schools will be normal practice for the remainder of the year, and quite probably into 2021. In the meantime we continue to remind students of the importance of hygiene, and our staff are socially distanced when working in the staffroom.

Schools cannot, unless partially closed as we were during Term 1, run normal classes with social distancing. This is why the NSW Government is requiring every person with any flu-like symptom to be tested and remain isolated until their result is confirmed.

Students must not attend, and must be tested for COVID, if they are in any way unwell.

The greatest risk at school at this moment (other than health) is to the Year 12 students who are in the middle of their Trial HSC examinations. If we were required to close the school during this period it would be a huge blow to their preparation, concentration and application during their exams.

On a different note, I shared with you in the last bulletin a list of important dates for the remainder of the term. These have been published on Skoolbag. Do you have the Skoolbag app on your phone? You should! It is a simple app that runs on all models of mobile phone, and is the perfect way to be notified of school messages and letters that are sent to parents. Let me just say that it’s a much more reliable way to receive notes from school than most students. I know with my eldest child, we used to find school notes in his bag from months earlier!

Finally, there is one additional change which again will be published via Skoolbag. On Friday 28 August school will conclude at 1:10pm and students will be dismissed. This time will be spent by staff preparing resources just in case we are required to return to remote learning.

The academic community

The Trial HSC examinations have begun and our Year 12 students have started well. A number of students actually said that the English exam wasn’t so bad! Please continue to keep our Year 12 students in your thoughts and prayers.

I have often written about progress in learning. There are two projects we are conducting at the moment to seek input from students about their understanding of learning, and more generally their thoughts about the school community. The first will involve speaking to students in class and asking them a number of simple questions that include:

  • What feedback do you receive in this class that helps to improve your learning?

  • How do you know your learning is improving?

  • What do you do if you’re stuck (on your work)?

  • What skills do you think of when we say learning skills?

The answers we receive will inform us of ways to improve our own teaching and learning.

The second project is the annual Tell Them From Me survey.  This is conducted each year in all CEDP schools and is completed by all students and staff.  Parents are also encouraged to respond, and you will find details of the login process in this newsletter (and sent again by Skoolbag).  The range of student questions is very wide, and includes academic and social questions.  The data that is reported to us helps inform decisions for future projects.

The Patrician community

During this term we had planned to compete on the sports field with the other Patrician schools. COVID-19 has, of course, cancelled these plans. Nonetheless we stay in constant contact with our brother and sister schools. We also stay in touch with our Patrician Brother community. We are thankful that there’s no news to report - everyone is safe, happy and healthy. Perhaps it’s the luck of the Irish! Please keep our Brothers’ community in your prayers.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As part of our continual commitment to improving learning and well-being outcomes for students, we are seeking your assistance by asking you for feedback about the programs and performance of the College. This is particularly important this year as 2020 has required us to work together much differently to prior years.

We ask that you complete the Tell Them From Me survey by clicking on the link below: http://tellthemfromme.com/Delany2020

Your feedback assists us with planning and is invaluable in guiding priorities for the College community.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Talking about . . .

Like so many things, talking and listening can be done badly, just OK, or really well. And like any other skills, you get better with practice.

Good communication with children is about:

·   encouraging them to talk to you - and listening so they can tell you how they feel.

·   being able to really listen and respond in a sensitive way to all kinds of things - not just nice things or good news, but also anger, embarrassment, sadness or fear.

·   focusing on body language and actions as well as words and interpreting nonverbal forms of communication. (2014 Healthy Families).

Communicating with your children aids in the development of positive spiritual, mental, social and physical attitudes and behaviours. Some common questions which parents have are, how can I get my child to tell me about their school day? And, how do I get my child to give me more than one-word responses?

A good way to hear the answers from your children to these questions about their daily school experiences is to ensure that you are asking questions which do not have simple yes or no answers. Teachers have perfected the use of open-ended questions to gauge student understanding of content knowledge and skills. You may like to try out some open-ended questions on your children. Some examples include:

·   What was the most important thing you learned in today’s class and why is it important?

·   How could you apply what you learned today to real life?

·   What are two ways you contributed in class today?

A relationship where children feel comfortable talking about what they’ve been doing and with whom, will help keep the positive lines of communication open.

Religious Education

Prayer Service & Donations for Lebanon.

Let us pray.

Gracious God, Send your Holy Spirit among the people of Lebanon to dispel the fear that accompanies grief and loss. Help the international community to be generous in aid. Let us turn as Jesus directed us to his mother.

Lord hear our prayer.

At Delany we were shocked and saddened to see the news on the explosion in Lebanon. Students and staff immediately joined together for a prayer service and over the next two days we organised an impromptu collection from senior mentor classes and staff. The amount raised in just two days was $233.35. We aim to follow up with more activities to raise funds further for the rebuilding efforts and pray for all affected by this event.

Mufti Day fundraiser for Lebanon

This Friday 21 August will be a mufti day for all Staff & Students requiring a $2 donation & will be collected at the gates in the morning.

Prayer for Year 12

Year 12 started their HSC Trial Exams on Monday. This can be a very stressful time for the students and their families. We ask that you keep Year 12 in your prayers. The Trial provides a valuable learning experience for students giving them insight into how effectively they have communicated the content and displayed the skills taught in their respective courses. What matters most is that students give each exam their best effort and then set goals for improvement after the exams  using the results and  feedback to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Prayer  for Year 12

Lord, I pray for students who are taking exams this time of the year, those I know and those I do not know. You alone know how I experienced similar times with a sense of loneliness, challenge, anxiety and stress.

Reach out and touch the hearts and minds of students with a sense that you are will them; with confidence to face the challenge; and with the realisation that their anxiety and stress can be a positive energy in their pursuit of excellence.

Give them insight to understand what they have studied and help them to remember it when the time comes.

Help them to keep in perspective the many gifts and talents you have already given them that they may use them for the greater honour and glory of God.

Amen

Learning In Focus

Learning for Mission was a non-atar, Religious Education course available to students this year. This course involved in- school learning modules focused on what being a disciple of Jesus means, and how service can lead us to know and love Jesus.

Part of the course required students to understand community service where they volunteered time to assisting others. Some of our students worked with Holy Trinity & St Olivers Primary students, this was a great experience for the all involved. Our students had to demonstrate leadership, empathy and patience in assisting younger students with their learning. That they did a great job is evident in the feedback we received and in the photos attached.

Science

Yr 11 Investigating Science.

Task 2 of the Yr 11 Assessment and Depth Studies was Model making. Students made models to show how information can be displayed and  be understood by people. Students made various models( Diagram, Physical replica, Analogy, Mathematical models) to show different concepts in Science.

Some of the interesting models included the Heart model, Hydraulic jack, formation of Stars diagram, the Water cycle and the Autonomous Emergency Braking system.  Students thoroughly enjoyed the construction, research and presentation of it.

The PDHPE storeroom has been moved and this has provided staff and students with a new and improved facility that is close to all the sport facilities and amenities at the College.

We encourage all of our students to participate in PDHPE practical lessons and change into their sport uniforms at the start and end of the lesson.

During these difficult and challenging times it is important that our students remain as active as possible.

Updated Health Care Plans & Medical Information

If your child has any type of allergy or Asthma please make sure you have an updated Health Care Plan or Asthma Action Plan from your doctor.

Without this Health Care Plan the school can not provide the appropriate medical treatment should your child become ill. The school updates their Excursion Risk Assessments from the Health Care Plan you provide to the school.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
