A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Trivia Night

Thank you to the many families who attended our trivia night on Saturday night. What a fantastic community event it was! We loved seeing the dress ups and the colourful and creative table themes adding to the fun on the night. Thank you everyone, for your generosity in the auctions, raffles and games. My sincere thanks to Amy Wadsworth for her tireless work in planning, organising and delivering on a very successful night. We are very fortunate to have you in our school community making such an incredible contribution. Thank you also to Justin Owen for bringing the energy and expertise as MC. We also had a number of very generous sponsors who donated some wonderful prizes which was really incredible. We look forward to more community fun in the future.

Student Leadership

Last week we witnessed a fantastic student leadership assembly, led by our lighthouse leaders with significant contributions from each leadership group. What really stands out is the range of opportunities for students to participate in lunchtime activities, fundraising moments and special events, facilitated by students and supported by staff. Student leaders also began introducing us to a number of Kaurna words, linked to their group. We are very proud of our leaders and the confidence and communication they develop through their roles and service to their school community.

Interview week

Thank you to families for attending the mid-year interviews. We are aware that some families experienced some challenges with the Audiri booking system. We apologise for this and will work to rectify this for future interviews to avoid possible confusion. You should’ve also received an emailed copy of your child’s student report. If you didn’t receive an emailed report, please contact the school front office and we will arrange for a report to be emailed to you.

As you reflect on the first part of the year with your child, you might like to ask them:

·         What are you most proud about achieving, during the first half of the year?

·         What was something you achieved that you didn’t think you could?

·         How did you push yourself out of your comfort zone when things got a bit tough?

·         What is something new you tried in your learning?

·         What is something you are aiming to achieve in the second half of the year?

Learning should be hard and mistakes are expected and encouraged as students work towards new goals. As always, we are striving for learning progress over perfection as students embrace new challenges. We know that working together between home and school is the best way to engage and challenge students to be the best version of themselves.

I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the work of our staff over the term in bringing together the first semester of learning. I am always proud of the work that happens on a daily basis in classrooms, led by our teachers and SSO staff. Our students continue to engage positively in their learning and that is a credit to everyone at our school.

With holidays upon us I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy term two holiday period. Hopefully the term break allows time to recharge for everyone and we can put the winter illness behind us! Term 3 commences on Monday 22nd July.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

As we approach the end of term 2 I reflect on all the wonderful learning opportunities that have been offered this term for our students and staff. As we look ahead we are excited with all the enriching experiences that await us in term 3.

Mid Year Intake- Reception 7W Ms Lewis Class

We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to our new Reception students who will be starting in Ms. Lewis' class in Term 3. It is with great excitement that we introduce these young learners to our school community, where they will embark on a journey of discovery and growth.

Starting school is a significant milestone, and we are committed to providing a nurturing environment where each child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Ms. Lewis is dedicated to creating a supportive classroom where curiosity is encouraged, and learning becomes an adventure.

Our school values the partnership between home and school, and we look forward to working together to ensure a smooth transition and a successful start for our new Reception students.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to our new students and their families as they begin this exciting chapter at our school next term.

Premiers Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is an initiative aimed at encouraging children and students to read more books. Each year, students are challenged to read a set number of books within a specified timeframe. Typically, the challenge includes a wide range of books across different genres and reading levels, catering to various age groups from primary to secondary school.

Participants are required to log their reading progress on the books they read. We remind families that we are reaching the end of the challenge next term. All forms completed will need to be returned to the library by the end of week 7, term 3. Students who complete the challenges are presented with either a certificate or a medal.

Donating Unused Books

Are you doing a clear out over the holidays? Are you clearing out the book shelves? Have your kids outgrown their books? Well, we can help you out. The Literacy Lovers and Charity champions are working together next term to hold a second hand book sale. If you have any children's books that are in good condition that you are willing to donate, Please send them to school next term. More information will follow next term.

Book Week 2024- 'Reading is Magic'

Welcome to the enchanting world of Book Week 2024, where reading truly becomes magic! This year, we invite students to embark on a spellbinding adventure through the pages of books.

Book Week is not just about reading—it's about discovering the extraordinary worlds that books open up. From wizards and dragons to historical heroes and futuristic explorers, every story is a portal to imagination and knowledge.

This year's theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. So, start your planning for what creature or character you can come dressed as. Book Week is held in week 5 next term, so you can start your planning in the holidays.

Let's make 2024 a year where reading ignites sparks of wonder and possibility. Join us as we celebrate the magic of stories and the adventure of learning together!

Have a relaxing and safe holiday break. We look forward to seeing you all in term 3.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

Lighthouse Leaders Newsletter Article

Last week on Thursday the boys competed in SAPSASA soccer at HCEPS. Sadly they did not move on to the next round but they did a good job. Next term the girls' team will be competing in round 2 hopefully they move on to the next round. The year 4's and up went to the movies and we watched the new Inside Out movie. We all enjoyed it. It was interesting to see inside the brain of Riley who had different emotions. Some classes around the school have been doing some activities around NAIDOC week which is coming up on the 7th of July. Classes  have been working with buddies and friends in their class to learn more around NAIDOC week. The mid-year receptions have been coming to our school for transitions. Some classes did activities with the children and we look forward to seeing them next term. We all can't wait for week 1 term 3. We hope that everyone will have a nice holiday.

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR WELLBEING LEADER

The Resilience Project

Throughout the year, we have been working closely with The Resilience Project to support the wellbeing of our school community.

The resilience project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience.

Our Partnership Program consists of online presentations and weekly lessons for students, professional development for staff, and Parent & Carer Hub (inc. digital presentations) for our parent and carer community.

Next term, we’ll be sharing the Parent & Carer Hub with you. The videos are 5-10 minutes long and will walk through the key pillars of resilience: Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness. You’ll hear stories and be introduced to activities to show how these strategies can support our kids' learning and development, and also support you as parents and carers.

This program is an important part of our school’s effort to look after the mental health of our community.

View the first presentation of the series here:

Part 1: Meet Hugh and learn about The Resilience Project - https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

In this presentation, Hugh shares a personal experience about his sister's battles with Mental Illness.

Note: This video contains a story about an Eating Disorder that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page.

Below is a TedX talk from Lael Stone. Lael is an educator, TEDx speaker, author, mother, consultant and counsellor who has been working with families for over 20 years. She has worked closely with The Resilience Project for 4 years now and continues to inspire adults around the world. I would like to share her words of wisdom... I promise you, it's worth a watch!

Kind Regards,

Ellie Burford

Year 6 Japanese Quiz Day

The Japanese Quiz Day was held at Sheidow Park Primary School. The schools that participated were Hallett Cove East PS,  Hawthorndene PS, Flagstaff Hill PS and Warradale PS. All the schools combined together to make groups with three students from each school. We collaborated together to answer questions. There were many different categories including money, hiragana, geography and other Japanese topics. There were also different bonus activities such as a Kendama competition, Jan ken pon games and more fun tasks.

In 3rd place were the Cherry Blossoms, 2nd place Sakuras and in 1st place the Ichiban Sakuras! The top three groups all got prizes. In the end if you still didn’t win, you still got delicious Japanese Pocky. We all had an amazing time!
