2022 Term 1 Week 7

Supporting Students

Thank you to the many families who are contacting the school to identify a household case of Covid. We wish all our families well as they manage the health and safety of family and the disruptions that occurs to family and work life.

Students must isolate at home for 7 days when there is a positive case of COVID-19 in the household. If a household contact, the following arrangements will apply:

• If your child is unwell – as with any case of illness, students should rest and recuperate. There is no expectation that they will work from home if they are not well.

• If your child is well, they can work on the Department of Education’s Digital Learning Packs. All learning from home activities for this short period at home can be accessed through the NSW Digital Learning Packs or from the school's website, Learning From Home link.

https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/learning-from-home/learning-at-home/2022-digital-learning-packs/primary

When supporting your child to access these activities, follow the above link and select your child’s year level to get started. Students should begin with Day 1, regardless of what day of the week it is. Each day provides a variety of learning activities that students will be prompted to progress through.

Student Leadership

Our student leaders of 2022 Xanthe, Freya, Aarav and Githanjali spent yesterday working with over 1000 other young primary school leaders at a specially designed conference to train young people as they step up in leadership.

Reflections of the day

  • It was a great experience spending  a full day of learning about what leadership means - Xanthe
  • The day was really interesting exploring all the ways we can STEP Up and try new things in our school - Githanjali
  • Meeting other leaders from other schools and learning about what happens in their school was really great - Aarav
  • We had an opportunity to hear ideas, meet others and discuss what we can do to make our school an even better school - Freya

Harmony Day 2022

What is Harmony Week?

Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.

The message of Harmony Week is everyone belongs. It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.(Harmony.gov.au)

Harmony week is March 15-21

During Harmony Week  students will participate in a range of activities and discussions about cultural diversity, racism and kindness.

We will celebrate Harmony Week by wearing orange on

Harmony Day-  Monday March 21st,

To celebrate kindness and multiculturism in our school students can come dressed in orange on the day.

Why Orange?

Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Students can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

What you can do at home:

At home talk with your child about their cultural background. You may like to discuss with them your family’s cultural traditions, food, clothing and dance.  Discuss actions on how to be ‘kind’ and respect others cultural traditions and differences as we live and learn together at Melrose Park PS.

School Photos

Congratulations to our wonderful students who demonstrated patience, understanding and manners today as we worked through photo day  under such miserable conditions at the school. The team of photographers congratulated the school on having such a wonderful group of students to work with. They made particular mention of the Year 5  class demonstrating exemplary manners and kindness to each other. Well done kids!!!!

Siblings also had photos taken during the lunch break. If you have missed the envelope return, these photos are available to purchase.

Unfortunately some students missed the photo opportunity due to illness.

If interested the School Photographer will host a Studio Day in their offices in Seven Hills on 12 April which is Week 1 of the holidays. For enquires regarding photos please contact them on 96749824

Safety - Kiss and Ride

Over the past fortnight, I have had situations of dangerous driving and parking reported to me and I have also personally witnessed them myself.

Kiss and Ride Zone  on Wharf Rd is for your convenience, for your child’s safety and for the safety of every student at MPPS.

Designed for quick entry and exit, it minimises congestion and risk when used properly by all parents.  The Kiss and Ride Zone operates under ‘No Parking’ traffic rules.

Stopping for more than 2 minutes is not allowed in a No Parking area. Therefore the Kiss and Ride Zone cannot be used for parking between 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4pm on school days.

You are obliged to remain in your vehicle. Penalties for not complying with School Zone parking are levied b by rangers  when patrolling the area. The penalty and fine for ‘kiss and ride' zones include; 2 demerit points and $165 fine.

For the Safety of Children in the Kiss and Ride Zone

1. Drivers Do Not Leave your Vehicle

To assist with traffic flow in the Kiss and Ride Zone, drivers are encouraged to remain in the car while the children get in and out. To facilitate this, children should travel with bags in the car and not in the boot. If a driver must get out, they MUST NOT move more than 3 metres from their vehicle.

2. Be Timely

If your child does not enter or exit the vehicle within 2 minutes you are required to travel around the block and re-enter the zone at the end of the queue.

3. Kerb Side Entry / Exit

Ensure your child enters / exits the vehicle on the kerb side. Ensure your child has their restraint securely fastened before moving off from the Kiss and Ride Zone.

4. Stay in Sequence

Please queue in an orderly manner. Drop/pick-up your child as close as you can to the top of the zone near the sign, allowing vehicles following you to enter the designated area.

5. No U Turns

U turns in this busy school zone is dangerous and puts children at risk. Drive up Wharf Rd turn left onto Hope St , turn left onto Waratah St, left onto Mary St, left onto Wharf rd.

Better still, park in the car park at the end of Wharf Rd and walk.
