Pelican Flat Public School Newsletter

Term 2, Week 5

Acknowledgement of Country

Pelican Flat Public School acknowledges the traditional lands of the Awabakal people we teach and learn on and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

From the Principal

I am always impressed by the excellent behaviour of the students at Pelican Flat Public School. Their hard work and efforts paid off today as they enjoyed yummy ice creams after successfully reaching the ice block goal in the bucket by filling it with earnt pelican pounds. We are now working towards a movie and snack day and know that all students are consistently displaying our 'care, share, learn' expectations. So I don't think this will take us long to achieve this goal.

Teachers are working hard behind the scenes to write Semester 1 students academic reports which are scheduled to go home on Thursday 23 June in week 9. If you wish to discuss any aspect of your child's report, please contact your class teacher to make an appointment.

If you have a child starting school next year or know of families who live in our zoning area, we are currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. Enrolments can be completed online through the Pelican Flat Public School website.

While we do understand that at this time of the year as the weather gets cooler, some children and families are going to get colds and flus. We ask that if your child is unwell that they undergo a Rapid Antigen Test at home before they attend school.

We have a supply of Rapid Antigen Kits at school. If you are in need of these please contact the office and they will be distributed to you.

If your child is a close contact but is able to attend school as they test negative, please inform the school office.

Have a great fortnight.

Mrs Leanne King

Attendance

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Gives students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents/carers.

What do I do if my child/ren is late, or if I need to pick them up early?

If your child/ren is late, you must accompany them directly to the front office for a late slip. The office staff will record the time your child/ren arrived, as well as the reason they are late. It is important that the parent/carer and student present at the office together on these occasions. Your child/ren will be given a slip to hand to their teacher.

If you need to collect your child/ren early, you must present to the front office. Admin staff will record the time and reason for early collection and print a slip. Parents/carers are asked to hand this slip to the classroom teacher when they collect their child/ren from the classroom. Please note that it is at the Principal’s discretion as to whether the explanation will be accepted. A medical certificate may be requested for medical appointments.

Public Speaking Competition

During term 2, all students are asked to present a speech as part of the Speaking and Listening component of the English program. Public Speaking provides students with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence to speak in real life situations.

Students may choose a topic of their choice. We suggest students select a topic of interest that they enjoy and are passionate to speak about. Speeches are to be prepared at home. Students may see their class teacher for Public Speaking guidance and support. Class teachers will be listening to speeches from Monday 6 June 2022.

Class finalists will progress through to our school finals in Week 8 on Thursday 9 June 2022. To align with the Glagabba and Zone Public Speaking, finals will be conducted in K – 2 and 3 – 6 groups.

One student from each stage will be given the opportunity to represent the school in the Galgabba Community of Schools and at the Zone Public Speaking Competitions in Term 3.

The note attached will go home on Monday 30 May along with tips and a marking criteria for K - 2 and 3 - 6 students.

Uniform

If you have any school uniforms your child has grown out of, we would appreciate you donating them to the second hand pool. Not only do the funds we raise from the sale of these items go towards supporting the school, it provides opportunities for families to purchase cheaper uniform items for students.

Opening Hours - Wednesday morning 8:40am to 9:10am (please note there may be a change of day for uniform shop). If you are unable to make this time, please email your order to pelicanpnc@gmail.com and make payment into the P&C bank account (see order form for details). Your order will be filled on the next Friday and given to your child. Our Uniform shop is run by our P&C. Under no circumstances will the school be able to complete uniform orders.

Please be mindful that we do only open and fill orders one day a week. Please be mindful that if the weather was to change and your child needed tracksuit pants, a jacket or jumper you need to be prepared early.
