Welcome to Our New Year 7s

A very excited group of future Year 7 students assembled on Monday for their first week of secondary classes.  Each time I bumped into this group during the week I could not help but notice that their smiles seemed to be getting wider and wider.  A number of these students told me that they found the week to be invaluable in terms of familiarising themselves with their new classmates, their new teachers and their new school environment.  And, most importantly (for some), they have now had a whole week to learn their locker combination!  I look forward to seeing all of our new Year 7s again when school returns on January 30 next year

Headstart Program

Our new Year 7 students are not the only ones experiencing something new at school this week.  All current Years 7-9 students have spent the week undertaking their first week of 2019 Years 8-10 classes as part of the school's 'Headstart' program.  The week provides an opportunity to give students an outline of the year ahead and sometimes even a chance to complete some work at home during the holidays in preparation for next year.

End of Year Music Concert

A large audience gathered in the Music Shed on Thursday night for a concert to showcase the talents - and significant progress - of the many students who are involved in the school's Music program.  As I listened to each item I could not help but be impressed at the amazing improvements students have made since this time last year.  It is particularly impressive to see Year 1 students performing with as much confidence as students in Year 12.  Even more impressive is the thought of how much potential these students have to keep improving their craft if they choose to continue with their music into their secondary years.  Congratulations to each and every student who performed on the night.  And thank you to Miss Bates for the guidance and encouragement that enables our music students to flourish.

White Ribbon Day Event

Last Friday, 7th of December our Year 10 students attended an information session to help raise awareness against family violence. They heard guest speakers Simone O’Brien, Linda McLennan (from Victoria Police) and Briony Milner (from Grampians Community Health) share their experiences, and it was very eye opening for everyone present. Mr Ritchie Dodds, CEO of WWHS, also shared some damning statistics about family violence, and in particular about violence against women. It is hoped that by becoming more aware of these issues we can improve these statistics in the future.

Thank you to the West Wimmera Health Service and the Hindmarsh Shire Council for organising the event. Students were given a card with some helpful contact numbers, should they ever be needed:

Police – 000 – if in immediate danger

Safe Steps – 1800 015 188 – Victoria’s 24/7 family violence response for women and children

WWHS Social Work Department – (03) 53 914 267 – Local counselling and support services

GCH Wimmera Family Violence Coordinator – (03) 53 587 400 – Family Violence crisis service

Men’s Referral Service – 1300 766 491 – Central point of contact for men for counselling, information and referral

It's Not Okay to Be Away

Attendance is an important aspect of schooling at Nhill College. If you are not attending school it makes it difficult to learn. Class attendance will be celebrated each week, with classes being recognised for the best attendance in both primary and secondary classes. All primary classes went into the draw for a pizza lunch. The lucky class drawn out for the term was 2/3 McDonald. This class enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch today to celebrate. 9X enjoyed their pizza lunch on Monday.

Gotcha Winners

Our Gotcha winners for positive behaviour out in the yard during the ninth week of Term 4 were Tori, Peta, Zali, Amelia and Samantha. Well done to all students who were nominated.

Reading Awards

Students in Mrs Kerber’s Foundation and Year One class have continued to learn their Magic Coloured Words with some students working on FRY words during the last weeks of Term 4. The various colour words and FRY words come from the most used word lists, which make up around 50% of words read in any given text. Congratulations to Casey, Chelsey and Lachlan for their great progress in reading.

Musical Items at the Primary Assembly

At the end of the primary assembly, the Junior Band performed 'The Spook' by Brian West, Corey played Kookaburra and Yankee Doodle on his trombone and Lah Si played Frere Jacques on her Viola. All the perfomances were fantastic. A great way to display their amazing musical talents. Well done everyone.

Highly Successful Primary Swimming Program

The primary swimming program finished Wednesday afternoon due to the poor weather on Thursday cancelling the last session. The students' skills in the water have improved immensely from day 1. It has been a great program; watching the students develop and enjoy being in the water. A big thank you to Mrs Toll and Mrs Dickinson in their organisation of the program, to our swim instructors and the helpers in the water.

Just a reminder :

The infant swimming fun day for students in Foundation to Year 2 will occur on Monday the 17th December from 2-3pm.

BYODs

A list of latest model computers available from Nhill Bi-Rite and Wimmera Office Equipment has again been included in this week’s newsletter for the consideration of families interested in a BYOD.  These lists contain a range of devices that will be able to support student learning – at home and at school – over the next few years.  A reminder that all students have free access to Microsoft Office, as well as some Adobe programs through their school subscription.  For families considering a BYOD, it is worth noting that electronic resources are being used more and more frequently in classes, with the College subsidising Edrolo subscriptions for all VCE students, while Maths Pathways and Education Perfect resources are also being used more extensively across Years 7-10 next year.  If you have any questions related to the College’s BYOD program, feel free to contact Mr Shrive.   The BYOD product lists can be downloaded from the link below, as well as being available from the College website.  Printed copies can be obtained from Mr Shrive on request.

Student Absences

Regular attendance at school is extremely important to the social and academic development of all children.  It is a Department requirement that parents contact the school each day their child is absent.  Any unauthorised absences currently trigger an SMS via Compass at 9.45am each morning to notify parents that their child is not at school.  If a parent receives such an SMS, it is requested that they contact the school as soon as possible to provide a reason for their child’s absence.  This can be done by entering an explanation directly onto Compass via the app installed on your phone, or by calling the College on 53912111.  For the remainder of this year, parents will also be able to submit an absence notification using the Skoolbag app – but this option will not be available next year.  In an effort to further reduce the rate of unauthorised absences being recorded at Nhill College, office staff will follow up with a phone call if a response to the SMS has not been received by 10.45am on the day of each absence.

2019 Compass and Skoolbag

From 2019 Nhill College will no longer be using the SkoolBag app. This means all notifications and absent notes will happen within Compass.  We encourage parents to logon to Compass to approve any absences your child may have, or to lodge an absence in advance if the dates and times are known.  The following is a reminder from the Compass FAQ Sheet that went home with all students earlier in the term.  The FAQ Sheet can also be found on our website.

How do I submit an absence note?

If using a computer, go to https://nhillcollege-vic.compass.education/ then view the student’s profile, select “Attendance” and then go to “Notes/Approvals”.  Click on “Add Attendance Note” to submit a note via Compass.  If you are using the app, go to the student’s profile, “Approvals” tab, and then click the plus button to add a note.  You can submit notes ahead of time if you know your child will be absent in the future.

From 2019 parents will be able to complete bus notes on our website at http://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/.  This will not require the app to access.  Alternatively, parents will be able to ring the College or email nhill.co@edumail.vic.gov.au

Christmas Cheer

Miss Jones and Mrs Crouch's class came to visit the staffroom on Tuesday to spread the Christmas cheer.

Year 9 Alternative Program and Surf Camp news

Last week – officially their last week of ‘Year 9’, our 2018 Year 9 students participated in an Alternative Program at Nhill College (Monday & Tuesday) followed by a much anticipated Surf Camp based out of Ocean Grove (Wednesday to Friday).

A number of sessions and guest speakers were conducted over the first two days of the week and the students were split into groups of males and females.  Monday morning began with both groups having ‘Teenagers and the Law’ session with Leading Senior Constable Anna Lake from Hopetoun Police which included discussion of topics including Farm Safety, Cyber Safety, Firearms use and storage, Alcohol and Drugs, Bullying and Mental Health. Their Alternative program ended with on Tuesday afternoon with both groups participating in a mixed martial arts session run by Matt Mellington from Wimmera Healthcare Group and Horsham Allied Martial Arts.  Students were able to learn and practice basic martial arts and self-defence, mainly stating that this was their favourite session for the day.  Each group also completed a study skills session where the importance of study in their upcoming years and ways to study was covered.

The females completed a ‘Girls Program’ with Mrs Coughlan which focused on areas such as self-concept & self-esteem and community involvement & participation. Sessions included Identifying and working towards our strengths, calming & relaxation, a trip down to Snappy Seconds and Oliver’s – all of which were greatly enjoyed and will be long remembered by the girls. An entertaining ‘Minute to win it’ session with Miss Foulds also gave the girls some light hearted competition.

The boys had a few hands-on sessions down at the local CFA & SES stations where they saw first hand the workings of these groups and learnt about ways they too could be involved in their local community. Past students Jade Clark from Agritech Rural and Dave Winkler, Dave’s Auto Electrics spoke to the boys of where life has taken them since finishing school.  Ritchie Dodds and Stuart Bone shared their personal experiences in the workforce and spoke on general employability skills and looking towards the future.  Mrs Trenery oversaw a peer-led cooking session, with the primary students before an Amazing Race around Nhill saw the boys finish up down the street for a Morning Tea reward.

Wednesday saw the students pile onto the school bus and van with Mr Hedt, Miss Schneider, Miss Foulds and Mrs Toet and head to Torquay for their first Surf Session, with a quick stop at Waurn Ponds for Lunch. Tea was Fish n Chips down by the beach. Grocery shopping for meals necessities was completed in cabin groups before we then drove to Ocean Grove Holiday Park and checked in for the first of our two night stay.  Thursday was a day of adventure as we swam, slid and ran all around Geelong’s Adventure Water Park before taking in our next surf session in Ocean Grove. Cabin groups cooked their own evening meals and were then treated to some cupcakes and caramel mudcake in celebration of Miss Schneider’s birthday.  Some tired, sore and rosy-looking bodies slept very well on Thursday night.

Friday morning saw most students up surprisingly early, keen to check out and hit the road towards Westfield Geelong and then on home to Nhill. Many students took up the chance to start some Christmas shopping, others sat and people watched before grabbing some lunch before the long trek back to Nhill. The students were fine representatives of the College and certainly enjoyed the final wind down of their days as Year 9s.
