A message from our Principal.

Ready for School

Today our Ready for School (R4S) transition program commenced for our 2021 kindergarten students. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all families, particularly those who may be visiting our school for the first time. This is the first week of the 4 week program and we hope the children enjoyed themselves and left feeling excited about the big year ahead. If you know anyone living in our school zone who has kindergarten aged children for 2021, please don’t hesitate to refer them to our school office for further details of enrolment.

School Gates

During the height of the COVID situation, when our grounds became off limits to parents, our staff very willingly stepped up and supervised the school gates each morning. As I’m sure you will all understand, this took away significant time from meetings, lesson preparation and playground duties, particularly in the crucial period before school. As these pick up and drop off procedures are now well established and students and families have set routines, staff will no longer be manning the gates at these times on a daily basis. If there is an issue at the school gate and you need assistance, please call the office and we will arrange for a staff member to help you.

Community Forums

The 4th instalment of our Community Forums will go ahead tonight at 7pm. The session provides a chance for all community members to voice their opinions and ask questions. Tonight’s session looks at Curriculum. The Zoom access details are:

Meeting ID: 671 1211 7356

As was the case prior to the last forum, the community is invited to post questions and/or comments prior to the session through a google form which can be accessed at:

School Planning

This week your children may have reported to you that they have had casual teachers. This is most likely due to the fact that we have arranged for all our staff to meet in 2021 teaching groups to commence planning for the upcoming school year. This time provides the staff with the chance to discuss classes formation, new systems and curriculum options best suited to the children.

Presentation Days 2020

This year our Presentation Days will be held on December 3 (K-2) & 4 (3-6). Sadly, due to the current restrictions these will be student and staff events only – this is most unfortunate as this is one of our favourite community events. Plans are currently in place to record proceedings through assorted media. The exact details of the events will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Communication Options

A reminder that one the best ways to stay in touch with school events and coming dates is to download the WWSPS Skoolbag App. This will provide you with relevant alerts as events draw near. Our newsletter, website, school sign and Facebook page also assist to communicate these occasions.

Additionally, feel free to contact the school at any time to speak with your child’s classroom teacher. This way, an appropriate time that suits your work and family commitments can be arranged.

Ethics Teachers

The Primary Ethics program is a very popular program that has been running at WWS in recent years. The program teaches students about sound decisions making and contributing positively in the community. Currently, we have a large group of students on waiting lists to attend Ethics, as the course relies on volunteer teachers from the community to run the lessons. If you have an interest in being involved in the delivery of this highly valuable program at WWS, please contact the office so that we can provide you with the relevant details.

Have a great week everyone,

Matt Barr

Principal

AVID

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a program that prepares students for a successful future and teaches them the skills and strategies to achieve their best. The AVID program supports students to achieve and improve their results. Students work within a team and build positive relationships with teachers, peers and members of the community. AVID teaches study and organisational skills, as well as strengthening writing, inquiry and reading skills. Overall the AVID program incorporates a growth mindset approach which builds self-confidence and belief in their ability to achieve. AVID uses a WICOR framework for student learning and teaching.

WICOR stands for: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation and Reading

Students are taught strategies in each area of WICOR that will assist them in their learning.

 CHROMEBOOKS

Every class in Stage 2 and 3 use Chromebook laptops approximately once a week. Students complete learning tasks online using a variety of platforms including Google Classroom, Maths Online and Reading Eggs. Teachers can set a range of learning activities for students including research based tasks. The students enjoy their online learning using the Chromebooks and this will prepare them for their future education in an ever changing digital world.

School Banking

Getting involved in School Banking is easy! All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online - Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2. In branch - Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account, they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is Friday.  Each week you need to fill in your bank book and hand it to your teacher first thing in the morning. Last day to order rewards is 27th November 2020. If you receive a rewards slip it means you are eligible to order your reward. Thank you!

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking program parent guide from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
