Emotional Sensitivity

Earlier this week I watched a video clip that has gone viral. In it we see a mother singing a sad song to her baby who, while not understanding the words, certainly understands the emotion in the mother’s voice, and weeps. I sent the link to my sister-in-law who emailed back within two minutes. She had started playing it when her two year old told her to ‘stop the email. It is too sad.’ We live in a sea of emotion and, too often, our children pick up on the feelings that are swirling around them without understanding their meanings. It is part of our responsibility of care and love towards them to help them navigate these seas.

Emotions are an integral part of our humanity and are a gift from God to us. Through them, we are connected to each other and to the world around us. In a very real sense, they can be a sign, and even an experience, of the Holy Spirit of God in our lives. But our emotions can also cripple us or be used to attack or negatively influence other people. The challenge is to discover how to use them well in our lives. This is one of the fundamental roles of prayer in our lives. In some forms of prayer, we sit with God and use how we feel as the connection between us. We tell God how sad or happy or confused we feel, then sit quietly and listen for God’s answer. This won’t come in words but rather as a clarification of how we feel and how we should react in the situation that is causing our emotions. As we learn to be more sensitive to and understand better our own emotions, we will learn the skills to help our children do the same.

Loving God, you have created me with a variety of emotions that often seem like baffling forces within me. Send me the wisdom of your Spirit that I might use my emotions to grow in love. I ask this in Jesus’ name, confident that you will hear me.

Grandparents contribute significantly to family, future, spirituality and community. To celebrate the bond grandparents share with their grandchildren, Prep is hosting a Grandparents’ Day Picnic for the whole school on Monday, 31 October, at 10:30 am. Our students would be delighted to bring Grannies, Nannies, Mammas, Grandpas, Papas, and Poppies (it doesn’t matter what they call them) to school to celebrate how very important they are. Please remember to pack your picnic and a rug. We will have tea and coffee available. Prep is very excited and will be sharing a song and a prayer for our grandparents. After all, Grandparents are the best kind of grownups.

Early next week, families will be invited to nominate children for the swimming carnival using an EForm in Skoolbag. The swimming carnival is on Tuesday, 15 November, at the Southside Pool and will commence at 5:00 pm. This is an optional carnival and is based on nominations submitted by families. Once the nominations have been received, Mr Tapscott will confirm at lessons if the child is confident and capable of competing in the nominated events. The carnival is designed to cater for all levels of ability, and this includes the use of kickboards and assistance in the pool. All the 25m races will be finished before moving to the 50m pool. The program will be distributed closer to the event once nominations are finalised.

 Have a wonderful week.

Gospel Prayer Reflection

Ten lepers are cured of a disgusting and horrible disease, yet only one returns to say thank you to Jesus.

Can you think of nine different reasons why people neglect to thank others who have done them a kind service?

A thought to ponder... How are you, saying thank you?

Catholic Mission

This week, I have been delighted to spend some time in classrooms sharing the work of Catholic Mission in Ethiopia. Walking in the shoes of the other has been an essential part of Catholic Mission’s formation experience. I encourage you to spare a few minutes to watch the video from Mission in 360 - Ethiopia The 360VR experience invites you to engage with some of the children and families from Ethiopia. Take a moment to share in this story, spending some time in someone else’s shoes, looking through their eyes and hearing through their ears.

After sharing this video with the Prep students, they decided that our fundraising efforts should go towards sending two kids to school and providing some food and medicine for the farm animals who are a source of food for communities.

Prayer Refelction

Please join Year 1 in the Undercover Area this Friday at 8.35am.  Year 1 will lead prayer, reflecting on the Sacrament of Baptism.

Prayer Assembly and Roster

Each week as a community of believers we celebrate through prayer and ritual what it means to be a Catholic. Prayers and rituals will be led by a whole class year level and the purpose is not to perform but to foster the development of our student's spiritual and faith journey. This may mean that not every child will speak or take an active part in leading the prayer assembly. The scripture reference from Matthew highlights and reminds us of the importance and purpose of our school Prayer Assemblies. Jesus said “Where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them” Matthew 18:20.

    Book Wars

Did you hear about our book war?  Each week we are going to highlight two books from our library collection and try and convince you to read these books.  This week we looked at ‘Bear and Rat’ by Christopher and Stephen Michael King, and ‘The Last King of Angkor Wat’.  Mrs Egan and Mrs Brightman both tried hard to convince us to choose their book. But in the end we couldn’t agree and it was a tie!

    Reading Engagement

As you may have guessed, reading engagement has been something we are focussing on here at Wandal.  Reading engagement is so important – it is the instant enjoyment that transports you to the world of the imagination, as well as a vital part of life-long learning.  We want our students to get immersed in reading, both for pleasure and to help satisfy curiosity.  Reading helps us to develop empathy, develop communication skills and critical thinking skills.  A growing body of research shows that reading engagement is a key element in a student's success. Research by Guthrie and Wigfield found that learning opportunities generated by engaged readers themselves were roughly equal to several years of education at school (Guthrie J.T. & Wigfield A. (2000). Engagement and Motivation in Reading. Handbook of Reading Research. Eds. Kamil, M.L., Mosenthal, P., Pearson, P.D., & Barr, R.
