Principal's Message

Dear Community

I’d like to start this newsletter by acknowledging the hard work that our wonderful P&C have put in over the past few weeks to get things happening in 2023. Please make sure that you read their section in the newsletter, and also on their Facebook page for more details on the following events:

  • P&C Disco: Permission slips went home on Wednesday.
  • Plates fundraiser: What a great idea for Mothers Day! Order forms also went home on Wednesday.
  • Wear your Footy Team Colours day for a gold coin donation! Everyone’s favourite! This will take place on Friday 17 March to coincide with the start of the AFL season. Obviously, all the cool kids will be wearing blue and yellow along with me! Warning: anyone wearing black and white may find themselves in detention!!

NAPLAN

Over the next two weeks our Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in the 2023 NAPLAN Online assessments in writing, reading, spelling and language conventions and numeracy. Whilst we prepare our students for NAPLAN in the lead up, making sure they are exposed to the types of questions they may be asked, the format of the tests and the devices that they will be using (iPads with a plug in keyboard), we do so with a low key approach. In most cases, the students wouldn’t even identify what they are doing as ‘NAPLAN preparation’.

However, this low key approach is not one that is usually duplicated in the media, so over the next few weeks, please be aware of any other messages that your children may be getting. We want them to be relaxed about the testing, not stressed. The message we work hard to give them is that it is just like any other task and that all we ask of them is that they do their best on the day. If you could enforce this same message at home, that would be much appreciated! From parents, the main thing we ask is that you send them to school with a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast. That way we are setting them up with their best chances for success.

School Board

Good news! We have filled one of our vacant Parent Representative positions. Thank you Paul Monaghan for nominating for another term.

This means we have 2 Parent Representative vacancies on the School Board still available, 1 of a 3-year tenure and 1 of a two-year tenure.  You will need to be a parent at Scarborough Primary School until the end of your tenure to be eligible.

The Board’s role is required to help the school deliver a quality education experience to our children by:

  • establishing and reviewing the goals, priorities and policies of the school at a strategic level;
  • supporting the development of our School Business Plan;
  • planning for and noting school budgets;
  • evaluating the performance of our school in achieving the goals set; and
  • promoting our school within the community.

So, if the description above piques your interest we would love you to consider nominating. If you are interested in nominating for a Parent Representative position, please email Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au or express your interest in person to the front office. Nominations close at 3:00 pm, Wednesday 22 March 2023.

Should there be more than two nominations, all parents will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates will then be asked to provide a 250 word brief and a portrait style photograph to include on the voting slip. New members of the Board will undertake an induction at the first meeting.

In other Board news, we welcome Tina Van Maanen and Terez King (continuing in the position) as staff representatives for the next 2 years.

Kind Regards

Sarah Dawson

Second Hand Uniforms Request

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

There are lots of exciting things happening this term from the P&C. Our volunteers have been working hard to plan some great things for the kids (and parents). Below are some key dates for the diary.

Friday 17 March: Wear your footy jumper/ colours to school for a gold coin donation.

Friday 24 March: Plate fundraiser payment and forms due back. The children will be working hard in art to get their plate designs finalised. The plates are scheduled to be delivered in early May (just in time for Mother’s Day).

Friday 31 March: The planning for our school disco is well and truly underway. A permission and payment form should have come home this week. Please ensure you return this by Friday 24 of March to ensure your child can attend.

Canteen Week 9 Closed: Due to building works we will not be able to open the canteen in Week 9.

Tuesday 4 April: Baker’s Delight Hot Cross Bun delivery. Keep your eye out in the coming weeks for an order form for some delicious Hot Cross Buns! Baker’s Delight will contribute a portion of the proceeds to our school and deliver directly to school on the 4th of April.

Any questions, please email us on scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com
