Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Week 9

Principal Updates

Welcome to our Week 9 Newsletter!

Still lots of learning planned for over the next two weeks and we look forward to seeing all children at school unless unwell.

As we enter the final two weeks of the first term I would like to remind families of the necessity of attending school unless unwell. If for any other reason you are planning for your children to be absent we ask that you discuss this with the Assistant Principal [Gen Donohue] or myself. We are required to enter reasons for any absences into our Student Management System and if not sanctioned by a member of the school leadership team an X code will be applied - unacceptable absence. This then stays on your child's record as they move through school.

COVID updates

I have now commenced weekly bulletins coming out via email each Friday - informing our community of the number of students and staff who are active cases and new cases since the previous bulletin. There has been a slight spike but this is not increasing significantly at this stage. We do remind parents / carers that students are not allowed to return till 12noon on the 7th day of isolation.  We continue to sanitise through the day, have extra cleans done during the middle of the day and still encourage any students Years 3-6 to wear masks if they and their family choose to.

Learning Commission Kick Off

Our Student Commissioners thrived last Wednesday at the NTLC 'Kick Off' Day held at the Turf Club. Lauren Moss [Minister for Education] launched the program for 2022. Her opening address set the tone and showed such clear support for this vital opportunity for our students to share in and shape their own learning across NT schools.

'Our students have fabulous, bright and inquiring minds. They are the driving force for change as they continue to achieve meaningful improvements in their schools. Their voices are critical to improving engagement and education outcomes for all students across the Territory. That’s why it was a great honour to provide the welcoming address this morning and officially open the NT Learning Commission for 2022. We are proud to continue to partner in the NT Learning Commission, a program that supports students to tackle local issues in their schools through data analysis and regular meetings and collaboration with other schools The NTLC ultimately represents the 10,127 young people in their schools - equal to over 30% of all NT students!'

Huge thanks Minister Moss for your continued advocacy and Mr John Cleary [General Manager School & System Improvement Unit] for leading this work.

We have held off on our Harmony Day celebrations till Friday 8th April - we wanted to have all children at school and the Years 3-6 have been at swimming for the past 3 weeks. Stay tuned for further information about special events, activities and celebrations planned.

Week 9 question: What special event are we celebrating Friday 8th April?

Sandy Cartwright [Principal]

Assistant Principal update

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Week 9.

Naplan: Our NAPLAN practice tests took place over the last two weeks and things ran very smoothly. The children in Years 3 and 5 had practise using the various tools to complete questions and carry out expected tasks. They now know what to expect and realise that they don’t need to worry and it is just about doing their best. Our teachers have been able to determine some focus areas for technology and learning to support students preparation in the class for the more formalised assessments in May. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Attendance: Regular attendance at school is crucial in enabling each child to be successful. It is also really important for students to be on time as children will miss out on key learning. Please ensure you contact the school if your child is going to be away or late.

As we are all aware attendance has been impacted by COVID this term. With the support of our council we have decided that we will not be having a big attendance reward this term. We will still acknowledge great attendance within our classes and will finish our Term with our sausage special which will be available at the canteen on the last Thursday. We will also be having an extra big Harmony day celebration on the last day. Please see flyer for more information.

We have a few new faces lately as we have had to call in some terrific extra helpers to support our classes due to staff who have had COVID. Despite this the students have adjusted quite well to these changes throughout their day. I have certainly been able to spend more time in the classes with the children. Some of the children are very enthusiastic in letting me know the routines of the classroom which is great.

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognizing those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 8 of Term 1 was....Year 5/6 Henderson with 128 points!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 8 of Term 1 Finnis was ahead of Goyder and Manton with 4057 points!!!

In the lead for the year...Finnis with 18413 points!!!

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 8 Term 1: 89.78%

It is terrific having all our families back with us at school.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 8: Year 1 Bullock with 96.67%!!!

In the lead for the year...Transition Henschke with 94.35%!!! Amazing job!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 35 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 8 Term 1!

The classes with the least lates for Week 8 were: Preschool Red Group and Year 4/5 Lawrence with 0 lates!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Library News

The CBCA Book of the Year Shortlist came out yesterday with six books listed in each category. You can watch the announcement here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tglRBH6vbGQ or check out the list here: https://cbca.blob.core.windows.net/documents/BookOfTheYear/2022/2022%20CBCA%20Shortlist_full.pdf

Have you read -The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name By Michelle Pereira? This book has been shortlisted in the CBCA New Illustrator category.

Blurb - “When Zimdalamashkermishkada starts a new school, he knows he’s got to do something about his long name. When no amount of shrinking, folding or crumpling works, he simply settles for Zim – but deep down, it doesn’t feel right. It’s not until a new friend sees him for who he truly is that Zimdalamashkermishkada finds the confidence to step boldly into his long name.”

This book caught my attention late last year and it is now part of our library collection. I love it for the story, its message and the fantastic illustrations. It is well worth a read.

Kitchen news

So far this term we have been to Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, and China. The last few weeks have seen us travel to Vietnam and Japan on our food tour of the world.

While in Vietnam we learnt how to make a Bun bowl (noodle bowl) or rice paper rolls with lemongrass chicken, fresh salad and herbs. We tried some different sauces to go with them.

Japan was great, fun learning how to make sushi rolls and we had a try of wasabi!

In the last 2 weeks of term we will make some Asian desserts followed by a challenge.

The lemongrass chicken was very popular and I have included the recipe below. It can also be frozen in the marinade for an easy meal later on.

Lemongrass chicken - from Recipe Tin Eats

 CHICKEN AND MARINADE

▢600g chicken

▢1 stalk lemongrass , white part only, bruised them sliced into pieces easy to pick out later

▢2 garlic cloves , finely chopped or minced

▢2 tbsp lime juice

▢2 tbsp fish sauce

▢1 tbsp soy

Something to Ponder: Tech Addiction

“For 45 minutes to an hour after, it's just terrible. They're throwing fits. It's hard to get them off of it. It's crazy,” said Kate, about the aftermath of when her son, a sixth grader, has to stop playing video games. And their family doesn't have a gaming system, nor does her son have a personal smartphone. “We’re not in the trenches yet.”

Many parents, however, identify themselves as deep in the trenches of navigating screen time. With social distancing, stay-at-home orders and remote learning during the pandemic, many caregivers allowed more screen time than usual. Teenagers’ non-school screen time doubled during COVID, and now many caregivers and parents are afraid their kid’s screen time has gone overboard.

In her book “Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence,” Dr. Anna Lembke makes the case for how technology, with its promise of nonstop engagement and flashing lights, can be addictive. And while addiction may make one think of hard drugs or alcohol, activities like video games, social media apps, and sites like YouTube can also become unhealthy addictions. The professor of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine said tech addiction can have consequences such as low mood, irregular sleep, attention problems, increased anxiety and poor academic performance.
