Dudley Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 7 2022

Principal’s Message

Student Success

Congratulations to all our students who have represented Dudley Public School over the last few weeks. We have had students participate and achieve in many areas including athletics, public speaking, debating, game changers, ICAS testing, spelling bee and various sport teams. Your effort and fairness has been recognised and we are very proud of each of you for striving for your personal best whilst wearing the Dudley red and black with pride. A big thank you to the staff, parents and carers who have assisted to support these opportunities for our students.

NAPLAN 2022 Results

The results for the NAPLAN tests from earlier this year have been distributed today to Year 3 and 5 students. These sealed envelopes contain a report to parents to outline how your child has performed in the NAPLAN assessments across the 4 areas of:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Conventions of language (spelling / grammar & punctuation)

  • Numeracy

NAPLAN Bands for reporting are indicated below for each grade.

  • Year 3 student reports show bands 1–6. The national minimum standard is band 2.

  • Year 5 student reports show bands 3–8. The national minimum standard is band 4.

The reports show how each student performed in each area with comparison markers for the school average, Australian average and the achievement range of the middle 60% of students.

NAPLAN results should always be interpreted with care. The information contained in the report should be considered together with school-based assessments and reports to give a full picture of your child’s academic progress. Your child’s teacher will have the best insight into your child’s educational progress. Parents are invited to discuss any concerns or queries with your child’s teacher.

More information can be found on the NAPLAN website: https://www.nap.edu.au/results-and-reports/student-reports

Wishing all the special males in our students’ lives a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday.

Kind regards,

Chad Tsakissiris

Stage 3 Maritime Museum Visit

On Monday 10th of August, Stage 3 went to the Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, Sydney. We had to be at school at 6:00 in the morning! It was a 2 and a half hour bus ride. As soon as we arrived, we were all so interested to see what is held inside the Museum.

Firstly, we went into the humongous theatre to have a brief introduction to the staff and we were told about all the exciting activities we were going to do on the day. The best bit was that we were told about is designing our own sea creature that could be put on the ABC kids show, 'The Deep'. Our first activity was looking at paintings and sculptures of Aboriginal artworks; it was absolutely intriguing. We also got a look at what the old ships looked like such as the cabins where the crew slept in.

After that, we got to check out plankton species through expensive and fragile microscopes. We also learned about how important plankton is to our ecosystem. This was most of our favourite activity.

Finally, our last activity was the Sea Monsters exhibit. We saw skeletons of Mosasaurs, a Plesiosaurs and a 20 metre long head of an Icthyosaurs. There were so many cool facts about these exquisite animals. At the end of the day, we were so sad to go back but we knew that this was the best excursion that we have ever had this year. Thank you Mrs Sullivan and Mr H!

On Monday, all of Stage 3 went to the Maritime Museum in Sydney. We had to come to school at six in the morning to get onto the bus. It was a long trip down and when we arrived we were all so excited.

We entered the museum and walked to a room where we were told what we were doing that day. We were shown a slideshow about prehistoric sea monsters. Then we walked outside to a place with tons of interesting facts about sea animals.

When we came back to the building we looked at some Aboriginal paintings and sculptures. We had recess and went to a building about sea monsters. There was a massive skeleton ichthyosaurus.

After learning all about sea monsters, we went to another building where we looked at plankton under a microscope. That was most Stage 3's favourite. None of us knew that plankton had such an important role in the ecosystem.

Once we had finished, we walked up to a room where we were told to draw a creature that might feature in the ABC show, 'The Deep'. That was our last activity and it was a great way to conclude an amazing day.

Debating

It has certainly been a busy fortnight for our Year 5 & 6 debating teams. In Week 5, the Dudley Devils (Year 6) and the Dudley Dynamites (Year 5) participated in zoom debates against Valentine Public School. Both teams came up with many brilliant arguments and won their debates. The debating teams finished off the week with a Dudley vs Dudley debate. With both teams performing well, it was a tough call for the adjudicator, however the Dudley Devils came away with the win! Maggy Wardle and Elliot Munroe also attended the Hunter Central Coast debating trials at Merewether Public School earlier this week. A big congratulations to both debating teams and we wish the Dudley Dynamites (Year 5) the best of luck in the knockout finals. Well done to all debaters for representing Dudley Public School with pride!

What's New From The SRC Crew?

Student Council Coin Fundraiser

Starting next Monday 5 September, Dudley PS will be participating in a fundraiser organised by the S.R.C. It will run for two weeks.

Class SRC reps will collect and weigh coins that have been brought to school each day. The class with the heaviest amount for that day will win a prize.

At the end of the two weeks each classes coin collection will be counted. The winning class will get a pizza party in week 10.

The SRC would like to purchase equipment for our playground, like cubby houses and sand equipment made by the Men’s Shed in Redhead.

Start hunting your house for those piles of silver coins that are worth nothing on their own but if we all join our collections together, we could buy some cool play equipment for our school.

PS - we will accept gold!

Sustainability

Waste Education

In the last few weeks, we have been reviewing our garbage bin system to ensure that everyone is placing their playground rubbish in the correct bins.

This fortnight we have been reminding students about our pen and marker recycling program. Did you know that since we started our classroom collection earlier this year, we have collected more than four full buckets worth of pens and markers? That’s certainly a lot of plastic we are saving from landfill!

Garbage Guardians

Our Garbage Guardians are always on the lookout for students doing the right thing. Last week our Garbage Guardians nominated another prize winner…well, two actually! Congratulations to Kai and Zeb in Year 6 for always disposing of their rubbish correctly. You might notice why it was hard to split the boys as they both do such an amazing job. Thanks Kai and Zeb!

Speaking of amazing, we recognised the wonderful efforts of our cleaner, Kat, at morning assembly last week. Without all her hard work and dedication, we simply could not run our school-wide recycling program. Thank you so much, Kat!

Last week on our Mexican lunch order day, Kat noticed that there were zero cardboard boxes left out and everyone was responsibly placing their rubbish in the bin. This makes Kat’s job so much easier. Great job, Dudley!

Garden Club

What a turnout we had for our first gardening group after the working bee - 38 students! The sun was shining and there was a lot of excitement as new plants went into the raised beds and some of our newly cleared and mulched Boundary Street gardens. Some children were planting their first plant ever while others who've been Garden Club regulars all year were sharing their expertise. Some Kindergarten children were supporting older students, showing them how to scrape back the mulch before digging a hole in the soil. Friendly Year 2s were expertly demonstrating how to gently remove plants from their pots before placing them in the soil. Our environment leader, Harry, was getting equipment organised and sharing his expertise. Our time in the garden is such a wonderful way to cooperatively learn and build relationships across our school.

We hope you have a chance to pop in and admire the hard work of our students. Come have a feel of our native holly or spiky bushes or smell the amazing native mint. We'll all be excited when we can eventually taste the strawberries! The strawberry plants, along with our beautiful garden sign, have been repurposed from the old school garden. Our raised beds still have some space. If any families have some small plants or cuttings they think would thrive in our sensory beds, we'd love to hear from you.
