A little humility, please

I am all over Covid even though if hasn’t really altered my life dramatically. I know many have really suffered and have far more grounds to be over Covid than me. But I don’t think Covid is over us yet. Why do I say this? Because pandemics historically take longer to work themselves out but then, I don’t really know. In fact, there is an awful lot about Covid we don’t really know. The best minds in the medical business will admit there is a lot we don’t know. That is the ground on which they do research to learn more. I belong to a large family and we have the full range of opinions regarding Covid: from people giving vaccinations, to antivaxxers, to even some who don’t believe it exists (yes, conspiracy believers). If we are to hold together, we each need a little humility. Practically that means we each need to say, in our own way, ‘I don’t know’ and we need to convey ‘I respect you as a person even while I don’t respect your opinion.’ This can be tricky. This week my siblings and I are taking the opportunity to get together when it is not a funeral – yes, we have reached that age in life. And we have had to negotiate. For the immune compromised we are meeting outside…and rain is predicted. The spouse of the sibling who is not vaccinated has decided to catch up with friends that day. Yes, it hurt but that was the compromise. We live in a society where people are readily asked their opinions, too often on topics they know nothing about. Saying ‘I don’t know. I need to learn more,’ is rarely heard. I realised early in life that the true expert, the one with knowledge and experience, usually gives their opinion quietly, open to learn more from others. In fact, a saying I was proud to learn as a child was, ‘The more I know I know, I know I know the less.’ As Covid continues to roll on and hopefully not surprise us, let us all have a little humility, be willing to learn more, and above all, be kind. And recognise that as regards Covid, and everything else, only God knows. Loving Father, you know how Covid has tried and tested us – especially within our families. Give us all some humility, to learn, to respect and to be kind. We ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear us. Sr Kym Harris osb

Loving God, you know how much I need to love, and you also know how difficult I find it sometimes.  This day give me your wise Spirit to truly communicate with one person who challenges me.  I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me.

From the Principal

Last Friday, the Year Six students were presented with their leadership badges during a lovely ceremony that was broadcast to families via Zoom. The students were given the choice between waiting to celebrate and being presented when assemblies may return or the virtual presentation. Being keen leaders, they elected to receive their badges sooner and participate in the Zoom for families. Thank you to the Year 6 staff for creating a memorable event for the students and for empowering them on the previous Leadership Day to take up their call to serve St Joseph’s Wandal.

On Monday, I met with the eight school captains (house captains and school captains.) These students represent the voice of the children in this school community. Each week, they are invited to join me for a student council meeting to discuss inclusion by embracing diversity within the community. The student council and I will discuss the physical environment, their perceptions of wellbeing, interests, feedback on learning and other topics. The aim is to support the children in our school to engage with opportunities to participate and voice their ideas and encourage them to think creatively and critically on behalf of the student body.

In the upcoming weeks, the Parents and Friends Association will be holding the first general meeting for 2022. We are hoping this will be a face-to-face meeting providing an opportunity for families to engage together. All parents are invited to come to these meetings. The P&F is not just a fundraising group, it strives to assist the school in a variety of areas including classroom activities, social functions, pastoral activities for community members, resourcing and involvement in the teaching and learning at the school. This is quite a list that you might be able to contribute to. If you see a need in the school or have an idea for how we can build community, please come along and join in.

Meetings of the School Board will recommence in March. The School Board has many roles and responsibilities including enhancing the partnership that exists between parents and the Catholic school and enriching and strengthening the educational opportunities for our students. The School Board is a sounding board for feedback and advice to the principal on matters that impact current and future school decisions. I am looking forward to meeting with the board hopefully face to face.

This week, I am thankful for the virtue of excellence. We encourage everyone, staff and students, to strive for excellence as it means we are giving our best to any task and relationship. Excellence flows when we do what we love and requires learning from our mistakes.

I am thankful for the gift of excellence. It drives my desire to improve my skills and work towards mastery.

Prayer Reflection - Gospel Focus

‘Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be judged yourselves; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned yourselves; grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap; because the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back.’

Reflection:

The compassion of God is a very strong theme that runs through the Gospel of Luke. Throughout the gospel, the compassion and mercy of God is emphasised and a defining feature of the gospel is the number of healings and parables that relate to people who were regarded as the outcasts of society. In this gospel, Jesus is the embodiment of God’s compassion. Jesus wants all people to experience first hand the abundant love God holds for them. Today’s gospel passage is a reminder that when we experience God’s compassion we are also called to show it to others.

Shrove Tuesday 1 March - Pancake Day!

Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day! This year, in keeping with the 'COVID-normal' climate, we will purchase pancakes, rather than requesting parents to donate pancakes cooked from home. Pancakes can be ordered through Flexi-schools for 70c a pancake. All proceeds are being donated to Caritas, Project Compassion. If your child has allergies, you may like to send a little treat along in their lunch box for them to enjoy on Shrove Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day), is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Pancakes traditionally became the food of choice on this day, so that rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar could be used up before fasting began. Our Year 6 House Captains will be participating in a pancake 'bake-off' as part of a classroom activity.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is one of the most important holy days in the liturgical calendar. In recent years, we were able to gather for a liturgy as a whole school, however with COVID restrictions in place, I will collect the blessed ashes from the 9am Mass on Wednesday, after a commissioning ceremony.  These ashes will then be used in part of an Ash Wednesday ritual in each year level.

Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Jesus tells us in the Gospel to give to those in need, to pray for each other and to fast (go without something). This is to remind us of the many people in the world who do not have what we have – health, education, home, safety, security, luxuries and comforts, water and food. Fasting does not have to be about giving up food.

The Ashes

The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are sprinkled with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolise penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.

Learner Dispositions - Being a Responsible Learner

We are continuing to unpack our learning dispositions, finding out what makes us successful learners.  This week our focus is on being a responsible learner.  A responsible learner is part of a learning community and considers how his or her actions can impact the learning of others.  Responsible learners are critical thinkers and ask questions.

    Big Ideas in Number

This year you will hear lots of talk about the big ideas in number.  We are making this a focus for all of our learners, as data has shown that this is an area that many of our learners need to further consolidate.

The first concept we will explore is called trusting the count.  Trusting the count is all about the understanding that when you are counting a set of objects, the last number you say represents the total for that collection.  It is knowing that if you count it again you will get the same total.  Being able to recognise a collection without counting (subitising) is really key here too.  This knowledge should be gained by mid year one.  An understanding developed early in this area is foundational to all aspects of mathematics.  Students need this knowledge for algebra and beyond.

    COVID-19 UPDATE

    COVID Positive Cases

We wish to advise you that, during the past week, we have been notified of positive cases of COVID-19 in our school community.

St Joseph’s regularly consults with the Catholic Education Office and relevant authorities and continues to follow the advice of Queensland Health regarding cleaning requirements.

Queensland Health has advised that no quarantine of students or staff is required.

As COVID-19 remains active in our community we ask you to continue to monitor your child’s/children’s health and if they develop any flu-like symptoms:

    • Keep your child/children at home
    • Seek a PCR or Rapid Antigen test where it is recommended and notify the school of positive results. Please be aware, a negative COVID test does not change the requirement to be symptom free to attend school.
    • Follow the advice of Queensland Health

As we continue to navigate the pandemic, please remind your child/ren to:

    • maintain good hand hygiene at all times
    • cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of their elbow and dispose of tissues in the bin immediately.
    • practice social distancing from others where possible
    • wear masks when required

We will continue to work closely with health authorities to keep our school community informed of any developments and advice. Thank you once again for your ongoing support.

    During School

If you arrive at school after the 8:35 am bell, it is imperative that you come to the office and sign your child in. The safety of our students is paramount, and your cooperation with this small task is greatly appreciated. Any drop-offs of children’s items, such as forgotten hats, lunches, homework etc., are made to the office. Taking these items to the child’s classroom is not an option as our day of teaching and learning has commenced.

    Before School

Children should not arrive at school prior to 8.15 a.m. unless approval has been granted by the principal. If it is unavoidable that a child arrives at school prior to 8.15 am they are expected to utilise our Before School Care service. Morning playground duty commences at 8.15 a.m. At this time children move to the basketball court area where they are permitted to play.
