PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

We are currently looking to fill 3 parent representative vacancies on our School Board. Two will be of a 3 year tenure and one will be of a 2 year tenure. One will commence next term with the other two commencing in Term 1 of 2020.  You will need to be a parent at Scarborough Primary School in 2020 to be eligible.

Should there be more nominations than vacant positions, all parents will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates will then be asked to provide a 250 word brief and a portrait style photograph to include on the voting slip.  Members of the Board may hold office for a term not exceeding three years. New members of the Board will undertake training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board.  If you are interested, please email to Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au or submit in person to the front office. The nomination form can be found here or on our website under School Board. Nominations close at 3:00pm, Wednesday 16 October 2019.

The Board’s role is required to help the school deliver a quality education experience to our children by:

  • establishing and reviewing the goals, priorities and policies of the school at a strategic level;
  • supporting the development of our school Business Plan;
  • planning for and endorsing school budgets;
  • evaluating the performance of our school in achieving the goals set; and
  • promoting our school within the community.

More information on the Board can be found on our school website.  If you have any queries, please contact either myself or our Board Chairperson, Andrea Marchesi on 0409 068 010.

School Photos

School photos will be happening in Week 2 of Term 4 on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 October. This year we will be enlisting the services of a different company, Grant Taylor Photography. They are a local, family run business who have around 4 years’ experience in taking photos for a number of schools in the Western Suburbs. A note will be sent out at the beginning of next term. This will provide a link for you to register to get sibling photos on top of the standard class and individual photos that will be taken. All orders and payments are done online so there is no need to worry about returning order forms or payments on the day. It is important that students wear their school uniform on the day of their photos.

Swimming Lessons

There have also been some changes to our swimming lessons this year. They will be held over Weeks 3 and 4 of next term at the Scarborough Beach Pool. The lessons will be held across 3 sessions from 12:00pm each day, with students being bussed to the venue. The school and the pool are currently working together to organise class groupings and cost, so more detailed information will follow once this has been finalised.

NAPLAN

On Monday, Year 3 and 5 students will be bringing home their NAPLAN reports. These reports will show your child’s achievement as well as how they compared to the school and the national averages. The school will receive a range of more detailed comparative data next week. This data includes progress of individual students between Years 3 and 5 as well as details of the strengths and weaknesses of our cohorts in specific areas of the curriculum. Over the next term, our staff will use this information to inform our whole school planning as well as support plans for individual students in 2020.

School Board

Part of the role of School Boards is to review policies on a cyclical basis to ensure that they remain up to date and relevant to our school context and needs. At the last meeting, our School Board reviewed the Complaints Management Policy. A few changes to wording were suggested. Agreed changes will be made and the policy officially endorsed at the next Board Meeting. A link will then be included in the next newsletter and the website, where all our policies sit, will be updated.

At the next meeting, the Board will be having input into the development of a Mobile Devices Policy. This is primarily to cover the storage and usage of devices, such as phones, that students may bring to school. The Board is currently researching policies of other schools to source ideas to fit our context. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email them to me at sarah.dawson@education.wa.edu.au and I will table your suggestions at the next meeting.
