Principal’s Report

BH / Barrier Swimming Carnival

Last Thursday our small but talented team represented our school at this carnival. Thank you to Ben, Lachlan and Sam Harvey, Deacoda & Aiden Corradini , Ella Clarke and Matt Molloy for flying the blue and white flag for us. The highlight was Lachlan’s success in achieving 11 year boy champion and attaining the opportunity to represent Barrier at the NSW PSSA Swimming Carnival in Sydney in the last week of this term. YLB!!! Also, a big thank you to Miss Pilkington, Mr Dewberry and Mrs Molloy for their support of our kids and the carnival.

SRC Induction Ceremony

Our school’s leadership group will be inducted on Thursday 10 March at an assembly commencing at 10.25am. It will be so great to be able to have our families involved in this as restrictions have eased and visitors / parents are now allowed on site. Congratulations to our peer elected leaders for 2022.

NAPLAN – Year 3 & 5

Our Year 3 & 5 students will be taking part in this annual testing next term between the 10 & 20 May, and as always, we’ll organise this to maximise the chance of success and minimise the anxiety that may come with it. This year the tests will be administered online and lots of preparation is already being undertaken to ensure this all runs smoothly for our kids.

Adopt a Block

Next week on Thursday 17 March sees all our classes heading off on our first Adopt-A-Block delivery for the year. This is another highlight for us, to be able to connect with our near neighbours again, is something we have really missed. Students will deliver a package to their adopted neighbours on Thursday morning. Students have been busily creating items to add to the packages. If you are driving around our neighbourhood around 10.30am be sure to give them a wave!

Raising Responsibility

Fortunately, at our school we have a vast majority of students who can be relied upon to meet the expectations we have each and every day. At last Friday’s assemblies 87% of our students met our expectations. These students are to be congratulated and will no doubt be recognised shortly with the achievement of their Bronze Level. On the other side of the coin, 38 students were absent for 3 or more days, 30 students fell short of our school’s expectations. We work very hard to set up systems and processes to ensure consistency across the school. At times, when our strategies aren’t seeing improvement, we will need to call on parents and carers for support. It is crucial that families heed the call and work with us to work out how we get the best out of all our kids. At the end of the day, everyone has a choice – good choices will result in good consequences and poor choices will reflect poor consequences.

P&C News

The Broken Hill North P & C Annual General Meeting will be held this Tuesday 8 March at 6.30pm in the Community Centre situated in C Block, adjacent to the hall. It would be wonderful to see our record of 17 attendees surpassed at this meeting! It is a great opportunity for parents to get involved and share ideas and work in partnership with the school for our kids.

COVID Update – Current situation

We will continue to support the use of rapid antigen tests (RATs) in our school. If you require test packs please come into the front office and we’ll help you out.

All workers on school sites must meet mandatory double vaccination requirements.

Any student or staff member who is unwell and/or displays symptoms of COVID-19 will be asked to go home and stay there until they can complete a RAT or PCR test.

  • If symptoms continue, they should stay at home and take another RAT in 24 hours or have a PCR test.
  • If the second RAT or initial PCR test result is negative, the student or staff member can return to school.
  • In NSW, positive COVID-19 cases are provided a Medical Clearance Notice after 7 days and allowed to leave self-isolation as long as they do not have COVID-19 symptoms.

Our school will continue to inform the school community of a positive case and advise families of the current public health advice, including monitoring for symptoms

If a student or staff member receives a positive RAT result, they need to:

As of Monday 7 March, masks will no longer be mandatory for all staff.

Visitors can be allowed back on school sites regardless of their vaccination status. We have considered activities such as assemblies, parent-teacher meetings and other gatherings in the coming days and the following organisation will be in place until the end of March –

  • Cohort bubbles to remain in the morning, entry through any gate
  • Morning lines under COLA to commence the day.
  • Recess and lunch organisation to stay in place re current rosters. Review at end of March
  • SRC Induction Thursday 10 March at 10.25am to take place under COLA
  • Friday assemblies to continue in cohort groups.
  • New times- SpEd at 9.15am, Upstairs B Block at 10.40am, K-2 at 11.30am and C Block at 12.45pm
  • Parents / visitors on site – Continue with sign in at office and sticky label until further notice

How2Learn

HOW2Learn

One of our major and ongoing professional learning activities we have in place is HOW2Learn which is a research-based package aimed at increasing our teaching skills and improving outcomes for our students. Each week I will endeavour to propose aspects of mindsets and challenge you to take it into consideration in your role as parents / carers.

Fixed Mindset

Don’t try too hard; that way you’ve got an excuse if things go wrong.

Change to

Growth Mindset

Always try; that way you have more chance of success and progress.

Which mindset is most likely to result in learning?  Change the words, change the mindset!
