Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 1 Week 2

Principal's Message

Dear Delany community,

Welcome back to all our returning families and a very warm welcome to those that have just joined our Delany College community. It was great to see the arrival of so many eager Year 7 students last week and the enthusiasm of students as they started the school year.

As a new member of the community myself, I have felt very welcome and together with staff and students, look forward to an exciting and productive year in 2020. Our college theme for 2020 is in fact ‘Welcome’ and we will be working unpack how we ‘live’ this as a community as the term progresses. The priority at the start of this year has been to ensure that students settle into good routines, focus on their learning goals and arrive at school each day ready to work and participate as responsible learners.

Students have worked with their Stage Coordinators and Mentor teachers to understand expectations and plan for a successful year of learning. We have high expectations for each learner and the work has started from Day 1 – there is no warm up period! Your support as parent or caregiver is vital in assisting your daughter or son to meet expectations and achieve their desired learning outcomes.

On Tuesday evening we welcomed families with children in Years 7 and 8 to the Stage 4 Parent Information evening. The evening commenced with a barbecue before sharing with parents and students some important information about how we work together to build successful learners at Delany. The evening was a fantastic opportunity for families to meet one another – thank you to those families and staff who attended and volunteered to cook.

A reminder that the Parent Information Evening for families with students in Stage 5 and 6 is next Tuesday evening, 11 February 2020, with a barbecue commencing from 5.45 pm.

On Wednesday we celebrated the success of our 2019 students at the Scholars’ Assembly. Assemblies play an important role in the life of the college as they provide opportunities to share the success of students within our community. Our Scholars’ Assembly allows us to celebrate the academic success of our students and for them to share their stories.

Congratulations to Mary Ghribian,Tavishi Pieris, Leonard Dagher, Yara Fakoua,  Marie Peralta, Brenda Karam,  Paul Trad, Anthony Huynh and Irene Juru.

This Friday we are celebrating our first full College mass. It has already been a busy start to the year and the opportunity to come together in Eucharist is an important expression of our faith tradition. It is also an time for us to pause, acknowledge and remember those that have lost, gravely suffered and faced adversity over the Christmas and New Year period. Having said that, as a richly diverse community at Delany, we also have much to celebrate. As we acknowledge 200 years of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Parramatta this year, we, as theDelany College community, take a place of pride in that history. Granville is as old as Sydney itself. The first foundation for a church in Granville was laid in 1835 by Fr Therry. The first church was built in 1881 and the Parish of the Holy Trinity established in 1886. Patrician Brothers Granville opened its doors on 1 February 1942 with 101 students. In 1997, the college took the first coeducational enrolments. Throughout its history our college has always been called to be innovative and meet the challenges of the changing nature of the times. It has always thrived in doing this due to the generosity and spirit of a diverse multi-cultural community willing to work together.

In 2020 we face many of the same challenges as our founding fathers. While our students will graduate into a world of work much different than those students faced in 1942, the touchstones of Pride, Passion and Persistence will support us as we continue to adapt and prepare our learners for their future roles in our communities.

I look forward to working with you throughout 2020 and your continued support.

God Bless

I extend to our entire community a very warm welcome and return to Delany College. In particular I welcome all those who are new to our community - the year 7 students and families, and the many other students and families who have joined us this year. I trust you will experience a welcoming and vibrant College community, and I encourage and invite students and families to get involved in the various activities that are run at Delany.

The Delany community

Welcome to our community Mr Easton! It is immediately clear to me that Mr Easton brings tremendous energy to Delany and a passion for leading learning. We also have a number of new staff who have joined the teaching ranks. Our students have already adopted them as part of the team.

The beginning of this year has been an impressive one. Congratulations to our students who have arrived ready to learn and engage in classes, who are equipped with pens, books and an IT device, and who are dressing to a high standard. Mr Easton, myself and other staff have moved through the classes and we are equally impressed with the attitude of our students - there is an air of calm, engagement and learning. It has been, overall, a very positive start.

The academic community

Learning has already commenced from Day One.

Year 12 students simply pick up from where they left at the end of last year. Students begin their second term of the HSC course, and they will walk back into work and assessments. If your child is now preparing for the 2020 HSC I suggest you keep talking with him or her, encouraging, gently pushing and celebrating the achievements and experiences of this exciting (but at times overwhelming) year.

Students in years 8 to 11 are familiar with our expectations, and our new year 7 students (and other new students) will quickly learn how things work here at Delany. I encourage you to ask your child what they learnt during the day, what was the best or funniest experience, who’s in their friendship group, and how you can support them in their learning.

The Patrician community

Tomorrow, Friday 7 February, the Delany and Holy Trinity schools will join to celebrate our start of year Mass. This is a lovely annual event that welcomes and blesses a new year. The Mass begins at 10am and you are very welcome to join us for the morning.

Thank you

As I have already written, our students have made an excellent start. I acknowledge that this is a result of your work and support of your children - the haircuts, shopping for clothes, books, pens and pencils, lunchboxes… the list goes on. Education works best when families and schools work together.

I’ll take this opportunity to remind you of the process when your child is unwell. If they are unable to attend school please send us an email, or phone and speak to our office staff to leave a message. You can ring at any time of the morning and leave a recorded message. Most importantly, maximise the number of days your child attends school. In my experience, when a child is feeling only 80% OK,  the best medication for a speedy recovery is having friends around them.

I look forward to seeing you at our various functions during the year.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Religious Education

Welcome back to 2020!

Last Tuesday staff from Holy Trinity, Holy Family and Delany College gathered together and welcomed in the new year by celebrating Mass as a Catholic community.

During Mass we reflected on the year ahead - the year 2020.

We reflected on the term 2020 being synonymous with “perfect vision” and pondered on what it means to have spiritual vision.

I thank Fr. Andrew for allowing us to begin the year in such a Holy and meaningful way and I thank all staff who were present.

As we settle into these first few weeks, my prayer for the year ahead is that the Lord Jesus may place His hands on our eyes that we may begin to see what is unseen not just the things that are seen. That He may open our eyes that they will alight on the things to come more than on the things of this age. That He may unveil the vision of our heart that it may contemplate God in spirit and in truth.

God Bless

Reading: The key to success

Dr Seuss expressed it best when he wrote,

“The more that you read the more things you will know.

The more that you’ll learn the more places you’ll go.”

Reading is essential to learning and expanding one’s knowledge about any topic.

Consider the following, if a child reads for 20 minutes a day, they will read for 140 minutes a week, 4,200 minutes a month and 50,400 minutes a year. 20 minutes of reading each day will expose a child to approximately 1.8 million words per year (Scholastic, 2014).

This means that a child who reads for 20 minutes each day, will not only be learning, but expanding their vocabulary, using their imagination, sparking their creativity and improving their ability to communicate effectively. With so many advantages stemming from reading, please encourage your child to develop a habit of reading regularly at home.
