Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 25 March 2022

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

COVID

Thank you to everyone who is continuing to support the school through screening students for symptoms of the COVID 19 virus. This week there have been 24 students or staff test positive and have been isolating at home.  There have also been staff who have needed to isolate as close family contacts and have then become positive.  Even so, we have been able to maintain continuity of learning for students with the support of casual and specialist staff. Sometimes this has meant that different teachers have taught your children this week or on a day they have needed to be in a different class.
School Tour
The school will host a school tour on Friday morning next week for parents and friends who are considering enrolment for their children.  Please ask neighbours and friends to contact the school office to register their interest.  A further tour will be held on Thursday afternoon 5th May from 2.45pm.
Parent Training
Early next term, training will be held for parents who would like to volunteer as a parent helper.  This will be a short face to face session in the library covering how to teach reading, health and safety, confidentiality, child protection and WWCC.
Evacuation Drill
On Wednesday all students, staff and visitors participated in a practice whole school evacuation drill.  Everyone evacuated to the South playground in a safe and sensible way.

Dancefever

Next term Dancefever athletics will return to the school to prepare all students for the athletics carnivals on Wednesday 29 June. Dancefever will provide two accredited athletics specialists who will teach the students a range of fundamental movement skills.

Application for extended leave - Travel

If your family is planning an extended holiday from school, please consider taking holidays during official school breaks.

Please contact the office for an application form if you wish to apply for extended leave or it can be downloaded from the school website.

Knives at school

There is no good reason to bring a prohibited knife to school. No type of prohibited knife is allowed at school including pocket knives and any item that can be used as a weapon. Having a knife for self-protection is illegal. Parents and carers are asked not to send butter knives or fruit knifes in lunchboxes.

There is no good reason for a student to ever have a knife at school.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Valuables Policy

On occasion, students may decide to bring items to school that hold significant monetary or sentimental value. In keeping with legal advice from the Department of Education, the school cannot accept liability for personal belongings, valuables and other student owned property if these items become lost, stolen or broken.

As a result, we discourage students from bringing valuables to school including mobile telephones, Smart watches, digital devices, cameras, ‘swap’ cards and the like to school.

Road Safety

For your child’s safety, it’s very important to ensure students use the school crossing. At all crossings you must wait on the footpath, at least one step back from the edge of the road. Please wait until the School Crossing supervisor, Claudie, has stopped the traffic and called you to cross.

If you are driving, you must not proceed until the School Crossing supervisor’s hand-held sign is no longer displayed, or until the crossing supervisor indicates that you may proceed through the crossing.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

Reminder of COVID-19 symptoms

NSW Health and the Department of Education would like to remind schools of the full list of COVID-19 symptoms that communities should continue to look out for.
Symptoms include:
  • fever (37.5 degrees Celsius or higher)
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • shortness of breath (difficulty breathing)
  • runny nose
  • loss of taste
  • loss of smell.
Other reported symptoms include:
  • fatigue
  • acute blocked nosed (congestion)
  • muscle pain
  • joint pain
  • headache
  • diarrhoea
  • nausea/vomiting
  • loss of appetite.
Unexplained chest pain and conjunctivitis (eye infection) have also been reported as symptoms of COVID-19.
If anyone develops any of these symptoms they should get tested and isolate until they receive a negative test result.

Students and families get vaccinated – ages 5 and above

Millions of children around the world have already safely received the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines help protect us against serious illness and possible long-term effects from COVID-19, and also helps protect friends, family and the community by reducing the spread of the virus. Vaccinating children can help keep kids in school by reducing the likelihood of school closures and disruptions to school activities.

Get your child vaxxed today: https://www.nsw.gov.au/…/get…/vaccination-for-5-11-years-old

Changes to Self-isolation Requirements

  • A household contact will only need to self-isolate for 7 days commencing from when the diagnosed person took the test, rather than 7 days from last contact with the diagnosed person,
  • A household contact is not obligated to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21 day period (if the person is diagnosed with COVID-19, they will need to self-isolate again),
  • A person who had COVID-19 and later becomes a close contact or household contact does not need to self-isolate as a contact if it has been less than 8 weeks since the person finished their self-isolation period (up from 28 days in the current Order),
  • A medical clearance notice (which exempts diagnosed cases from any vaccination order for 6 weeks) will be able to be issued by or on behalf of NSW Health (in addition to a medical practitioner or nurse),
  • Updating the provisions relating to medical clearance to align with recent amendments to the Public Health (COVID-19 Care Services) Order (No 3) so that a medical clearance certificate operates as a 6 week exemption to the booster requirement as well as the requirement to have 2 doses of the vaccine.

To support students in isolation

Please access the Department's Learning From Home Hub found at:

Testing positive to COVID-19

If you test positive with a rapid antigen test, please:

1. Register your positive test on the Service NSW website so you can be linked to important health care support and advice based on your COVID-19 risk. If you or someone in your family can’t register online, please call Service NSW on 13 77 88.

If you test positive with a PCR or rapid antigen test, please:

1. Isolate immediately for 7 days.  Your household must also isolate for 7 days.  If you have a sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath after 7 days, please remain in isolation until 24 hours after your symptoms have resolved.

2. Tell people who you spent time with from the 2 days before you started having symptoms or 2 days before you tested positive (whichever came first) that you have COVID-19.  This includes your social contacts, workplace and/or school.

3. Monitor your symptoms. If you are concerned you should call your GP, the NSW Health COVID-19 Care at Home Support Line on 1800 960 933 or the National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. If symptoms become severe call 000.

LIBRARY NEWS

Code Club

Code Club returns first week next term!

Why join Code Club?

Students might become coders, but they might also be data analysts, teachers, social media collaborators, CEOs, lawyers or activists. They’ll work in fields that don’t even exist yet! And they’ll need to know how technology works.

Coding and digital skills are fundamental for our changing future. By learning how to code, young people are building digital literacy skills for a changing world. They’re also developing valuable soft skills including logic, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

Code Club is open to students in years 4, 5 and 6. It will take place in the library from 3:30 to 4:30 on Thursday afternoons. If you are interested, drop by the library and pick up a note from Mr Neufeld. We only have room for 30 students, so it’s first in, best dressed!

OFFICE NEWS

End of Term 1 Family Statements

Thank you to all the families who have already paid for their child’s contributions and special activities this term. Next week we will be sending home family statements which we ask you to pay before the end of term.

When making payments to school for excursions or incursions, each event has a due date for payment as highlighted in the box at the bottom of each note. This enables the school to finalise buses, book venues or tickets. Any late payments may result in children missing out on the event.

As the school is charged for each EFTPOS/credit card transaction, it is requested that parents only use one payment for your child/family when using this facility. Our preferred method of payment is for parents/carers to make payments with the secure Parent Online Payment (POP) on our Drummoyne Public School website under the MAKE A PAYMENT at the top right of the home page. https://drummoyne-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/. Payments can be made using either Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. All activities that have required payments so far this year, can be made through the POP system.

Thank you for your help.

Making Parent Online Payments easier

A new, upgraded POP page is coming from Wednesday, 30 March 2022! It replaces the old Westpac page and is accessible from the school’s website. The page allows parents and carers to make online payments anywhere and anytime. By using the upgraded page, parents and carers will enjoy:

  • a quick and simple user interface;
  • mobile-friendly experience – making it easier to pay via phone or tablet (as well as from a desktop computer); and
  • multilingual support which enables them to use POP in their preferred language.

SMS Messaging

In an effort to make it easier for parents to notify the school of a student absence, we are using SMS messaging. At 10am each morning, if your child has been marked absent, you will receive an SMS message to your phone. You will then be able to respond via return SMS, phonecall, email or reply via Skoolbag with the reason for your child's absence.

If you have documentation supporting the absence (such as a medical certificate or negative COVID test result), please send it to school with your child when they return.

Please update your year groups in Skoolbag ASAP

Please update the year groups you are following in Skoolbag ASAP to make sure you receive notifications that pertain to your child/children.

Please do this in these simple steps:

1. Open the Skoolbag app on your phone

2. On the home screen press on the Drummoyne Public School symbol in the top ribbon

3. Slide across to GROUPS, where you can then add or remove the year groups you wish to see on your app.

This will ensure that you see notifications that have been sent to specific year group/s, rather than only those sent to the whole school.

School Bus Travel for 2022

School Travel Passes

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. New Student Opal cards (including new Term Bus Passes) will be sent to the student’s nominated postal address within two weeks of their application being approved. .

Terms of Use

Students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use. All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

Monty’s Munch canteen is open for online orders

Thank you so much to all the parents who have helped in the canteen the last couple of weeks, namely: Laura, Emilie, Aliya, Amanda, Nirosh, Sally, Tania, Robyn, Megan, Nicole, Julie, David, Ruby, Ingrid, Chelsea, Belle, Robert, Sally, Heather and Jess. Your help, company and time means  a lot as the canteen can not function so smoothly without our wonderful parent volunteers.

A big thank you to student helpers too - Issie, Zara, Marie, Sophia, Isla and Mila. Students help to serve over the counter at lunch and recess when I have no parent volunteers. It is a great help as it is difficult to serve, operate the register and hand out on line orders all at once. I enjoy having their help!

Spanakopita is still available for lunch and recess.  2 pieces $3.   3 pieces  $4

Butter Chicken and rice will be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Single serve, GF, NF : $4.50

From time to time I will make items with foods that haven’t sold so as not to waste them. We had some grapes frozen that weren’t selling so what do you do with them?? That is where the internet is handy!! Grape sorbet was whipped up today in time for recess. Throw frozen grapes into a blender until pureed. Then a squeeze of honey, a dash of lemon juice and a small amount of lemon peel. Blend again and grape sorbet is made.

I had some dubious looks from students but  also some brave ones who bought a small tub. It was a hit! I even had a couple of students back for seconds. Only a limited number available selling over the counter for $1.00

I am also selling cheese melts at recess for only $0.50. Yes, that is correct!!  A bread roll cut in half with grated cheese on top, popped into the oven until just melted. Smells good!
