Term 2, Week 7

Acknowledgement of Country

Pelican Flat Public School acknowledges the traditional lands of the Awabakal people we teach and learn on and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

From the Principal

We are well and truly into Term 2 now and have been as busy as ever over the last few weeks. Students in Yrs 3 and 5 sat the NAPLAN tests and our Year 5 and 6 students recently enjoyed a day at the GRIP Leadership talking about what an effective leader is at school and how they can position themselves to be the best leader they can. Star Struck rehearsals are well and truly under way and are looking amazing! The GO PINK! day and the fantastic Athletics Carnival this week made me so proud to be the relieving Principal of Pelican Flat Public School. The sense of community was felt my many and our students are so lucky to have such wonderful staff, school, families and community support.

As the weather is getting colder, we are seeing more and more students coming to school each day in clothing that is not part of our school uniform. School uniforms promote a sense of belonging and unity and ensure each child is comfortable and safe for all the activities they do each day at school. The overwhelming majority of our students are coming dressed in full school uniform each day and it is fantastic to see. For the small minority of students who do not come to school in their correct uniform I look forward to seeing, with the support of families, a change in habit and full school uniform being worn consistently each day. Can I thank you in advance for your support with this.

The last day of term 2 is Friday 1 June. Students will return on Tuesday 19 July.

If you have a child starting school next year or know of families who live in our zoning area, we are currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2023. Enrolments can be completed online through the Pelican Flat Public School website.

Have a great fortnight.

Mrs Leanne King

Attendance

Frequently Asked Questions

My child won’t go to school. What should I do?

You should contact your child's class teachers as soon as possible to discuss the issue and ask for help. Strategies to help improve attendance may include a referral to the school’s learning and support team or linking your child with appropriate support networks. The class teacher may seek further support from the Home School Liaison Program to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.

What if my family decides to go on holidays?

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

What is the importance of arriving on time?

Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Give students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

* Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents or carers.

Spelling Years 1 - 6 Week 9

These graphemes can be used to make the 'n' as in net ng as in ring' sound. A grapheme is a letter or a number of letters that represent a sound (phoneme) in a word.

Growth mindset

You may hear your children beginning to talk about having a growth mindset. A growth mindset is believing that your brain can grow and you can learn many new things. You are not born smart; you become smart. A fixed mindset is quite the opposite. It is believing that you cannot learn new things.

Asking the following questions can assist your child to develop a growth mindset:

1. What was the biggest challenge you faced today?  (Ask your child, and then have them ask the question back!)

2.   How can you and I think about these challenges in a new way?

3.   What can we do differently tomorrow if we face similar challenges?

Uniform

If you have any school uniforms your child has grown out of, we would appreciate you donating them to the second hand pool. Not only do the funds we raise from the sale of these items go towards supporting the school, it provides opportunities for families to purchase cheaper uniform items for students.

Opening Hours - Wednesday morning 8:40am to 9:10am (please note there may be a change of day for uniform shop). If you are unable to make this time, please email your order to pelicanpnc@gmail.com and make payment into the P&C bank account (see order form for details). Your order will be filled on the next Friday and given to your child. Our Uniform shop is run by our P&C. Under no circumstances will the school be able to complete uniform orders.

Please be mindful that we do only open and fill orders one day a week. Please be mindful that if the weather was to change and your child needed tracksuit pants, a jacket or jumper you need to be prepared early.
