Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Week 7

Principal Update

Welcome to our Week 7 news!

Through last week I heard great celebrations as students across the school were sharing their achievement of their learning goals - reading, sight words, maths knowledge and strategies as well as writing goals. Students taking charge and ownership of their goals and progress towards them - super proud moments for us all!

NT Learning Commission

Last Wednesday we joined with around 400 other NTLC student commissioners at the Darwin Convention Centre to celebrate the positive changes that have been created and share all our hard work with the Minister for Education, Chief Minister and other Ministers as well as members of the Department of Education Executive Board. This was a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work of all our Student Commissioners who have been leading improvement  throughout the year at Alawa and who represent over 10,000 young Territorians across their collective school communities!

The purpose of NTLC is to empower all students to be 'Partners in their Learning' by actively listening to student voice to make meaningful improvements in schooling.  Our Senior Commissioners shared their story at the Expo last week and were approached by a Data Storyteller from Queensland who asked if they would be interested in being a Case Study in her book she is writing for educators across Australia. We look forward to sharing more about this with you as it unfolds.

Our Senior and Junior Commissioners will be sharing their investigations, findings and recommendations at Assembly on Friday 25th November.

2023 School Improvement Plan and 2023 Draft Budget

Over recent weeks we have been reviewing and planning for ongoing improvement and focus into 2023. The draft Annual School Improvement Plan and Draft Budget will be presented to Council at our meeting Monday 28th.

Friday 25th Assembly Student Leadership awards

Just an early heads up - as with last year at our Week 7 Assembly [Friday 25th November] we recognise and celebrate so many students at our school for their contributions as leaders through the year. Certificates will be presented to the following groups of students:

  • Senior Learning Commission
  • Junior Learning Commission
  • Tek Ninjas
  • Tek Interns
  • Library Monitors
  • Student Representative Council

Have a fab week and hope to see some of you at Assembly Friday this week,

Sandy Cartwright [Principal]

Assistant Principal Update

Welcome to Week 7

Our swimming lessons have begun for our classes in Transition to Year 2. The children are thoroughly enjoying this time, especially with the weather being so hot. As you would be aware this is taking a lot out of them and they are coming home very tired. There will obviously be adjustments to the learning program as the teachers are guided by how the students are feeling. Thankyou to all our helpers who are driving the buses to the pool for us.

This Friday our instrumental students will be performing for our classes from Years 3-6 at 11am. This will take place in the library straight after recess. We are looking forward to hearing more about this program for next year and providing an audience for the students to show their skills. Thankyou to Mr Bleakly for all your work with our students.

Don’t forget that our last Preschool Information session is on at 5pm-6pm tonight. Please come and join us to find out about our wonderful Preschool at Alawa.

Senior Learning Commission End of Year Wrap Up

Every Thursday after lunch, the busy minds of the Alawa Learning Commission are working together to create positive change for students at Alawa. The Northern Territory Learning Commission was founded nearly 10 years ago. It’s about students as partners in their learning and giving student voice a platform. The Alawa Learning Commission's working minds have been flying through DATA wondering what we could do to improve our school. We knew that we had to choose a line of inquiry to keep us on track. We narrowed the options down through persuasive speeches, debating and voting. This year the Learning Commission’s line of inquiry was… How do Alawa students engage with their data, are they Data literate and does it help them reach their full potential as 21st century learners.

After we chose this, we dove deep and questioned ourselves, “What does it mean to be data literate?”.  We watched videos on data literacy and had open discussions about what it might mean. We eventually came to a conclusion, and we now know that to us data literacy means to be able to read, understand, create and communicate with data.

We broke into three groups. A group to conduct interviews, a group to do classroom observations and a group to conduct a focus group with teachers. From the data we received we developed our findings.

·         Alawa students have an understanding of data and benchmarks.

·         Alawa students are still learning to set SMART goal, identify next steps and the strategies for improvement.

·         Alawa teachers are fairly confident in using data to inform their teaching however they are still developing their skills to help students become      data literate.

We used these findings to form our Recommendations.

·         Use current data sets to set goals which are relevant to individual student’s abilities, in consultation with the teacher.

·         Set SMART goals, ensuring everyone is aware of and understands the SMART acronym.

·         Use our Goal-Setting Guide to help set your goals- Teachers & Upper Primary.

·         Use teacher instructional videos to guide your goal setting session.

We made SMART instructional videos and now they are here for you to watch and learn how to set SMART goals in the future. We have also created posters with the SMART goal acronym. You will see these in your classrooms and in your data folders.  We hope you find these tools useful in helping you to set SMART goals to become data literate.

To celebrate the year all Northern Territory Learning Commissions came together last Wednesday at the Darwin Convention Centre to showcase their year’s work to each other, The Chief Executive of the Education Department, the Minister for Education and several other Government Ministers. This was a great opportunity for the Alawa Commission to discuss our Line of Inquiry but was also interesting and informative to hear about the other Learning Commission’s journeys.

Farewell Mr Dean and family

This week we say farewell to Mr Dean and his family who will be continuing their travels and head back to their hometown in Victoria.

Mr Dean has been a fantastic addition to our staff and will be missed. His wife Jasmin has also jumped on board as a great support as both parent volunteer and classroom assistant - thanks Jasmin!

It has been a pleasure having you all be part of our school community and both Ellie and Joe will be missed by their classes and teachers.

Safe travels and all the best.

School start time

School Start Time: Gates NOT open till 8am

Just a reminder to all families our school start time is 8:30am

Children can arrive, connect with friends and play sport when we open the gates at 8am. This is 30mins prior to the start of the day bell and staff are on duty to ensure safety and wellbeing of all from that time.

We ask that children DO NOT get dropped off / arrive prior to 8am unless a prior arrangement is made with Gen Donohue or myself.  We continue to have a small number sitting in the front office from 7:45am onwards - simply too early and way too congested for the office. I have emailed parents of children this includes and would appreciate your dropping them off 8am onwards.

Thanks

Sandy Cartwright

Honour Awards

42 students and 2 staff members will be presented with an Honour award  this week at assembly, Friday 25th November.  We will also celebrate our latest Honour Distinction Award winner Miss Mia-Teresa Evans Shaw.

Year 6 news

As the end of the year is fast approaching the Year 6 students have been extremely busy finalising their last year of Primary School. As we wrap up all the assessments in preparation for reports it has been pleasing to see so many Year 6 students make growth over the past semester. As the Year 6 students get ready to continue on their next chapter in life they have been learning a new dance that they will be performing at graduation and the last day of school before they run through the tunnel. They are working on a before and after art project with Mrs Baines and looking forward to their fun day outing. It is a sad and happy time for all involved, Mrs Baines and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 6 students for a wonderful year and wish them all the best for Middle School, we know they will do their very best!

A few dates to consider for Year 6 students

Preschool news

The dramatic play area is such an important feature of the preschool learning environment. Preschool usually begins the year with a home corner which encourages the connection between school and home. Throughout the year the dramatic play theme or focus changes and is guided by the children’s interests and needs.  This area is also a fun and natural way to introduce literacy and numeracy concepts though play.

This year we have had home corners,  pet shops, fruit and veg shops, pizza cafes and a doctor’s surgery (among other things). The process of deciding on our theme is collaborative and evolves and changes all the time. At the moment the Red group have set up a post office. Children are writing postcards and letters to friends and posting them in the red post box. The Blue group have set up a magic bus area which can take you to anywhere in the world! We have added a bus stop and some travel bags and will make passports to show where we have been. Dramatic play is a natural springboard for learning and children are only limited by their imaginations.

Have a wonderful week.

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day.  Students also can earn house points for having a go at the weekly quizz emailed out Monday mornings by Ms Cartwright. These points are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 6 of Term 4 Finnis was ahead of Goyder and Manton with 3366 points!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 94258 points!!!

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectations.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 6 of Term 4 was....5/6 Baines with 167 points!!!

The winning class for Weeks 4-6 is 4/5 Lawrence with 437 points!!!

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 6 Term 4: 85.84%

The class with the highest attendance for Week 6: Year 2 Ward with 96.84%!!! Amazing job!!!

In the lead this term...Year 2 Ward with 93.90%

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 45 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 6 Term 4!

For Week 6 the classes with the least lates were: Transition Henschke, 1 Bullock, 2 RIley-Smith and 5/6 Henderson with 1 late each!!!

In the lead this term...Year 2 Riley-Smith with 4 late arrivals!!!

Recycling Points

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Kitchen and Nutrition news

Week 7! How can it be Week 7??? We have had such a great few weeks in kitchen with our food tour.

Last week we went to Greece and made delicious Spanakopita (cheese and spinach) and meat and cheese triangles using filo pastry. They were fun to make and really yummy as well. The pastry was all flaky and buttery when they came out the oven.

The week before we had a visit to France and made apple tarts. Year 4/5 Lawrence made apple tarte tatin which is an apple upside down tart. These were a bit tricky to make but turned out really well. The Year 3's and 3/4's made apple galettes which looked great. Ms Elsa made up some of her famous ice cream to have with the tarts and Ms Sullivan whipped some cream with help from a few students.

We have all been learning lots of new skills and trying different foods. I am so proud of everyone who has a try even if they aren't sure whether they will like it or not.

Stay tuned for our very exciting interactive cookbook that will be released in the next few weeks. The elective group have been busy making videos to go in the cookbook and it is packed full of yummy recipes from the food tour this year.

Defence School Mentor news

I would like to begin by thanking Year 1 Bullock on their beautiful Remembrance Day assembly that was held on the 11th of November. The students were extremely respectful and aware of the significance of their special assembly. I would also like to thank our Senior Defence Students Felicity, Lachie and Daisy-May along with the two Defence students from Year 1 Bullock who spoke to the school and hosted the One Minute Silence at recess muster. Our Senior Defence students always do our Defence community proud every time they are called upon to present to the school. It is lovely to see students who were in the Early Years when I first started as DSM now moving up into the Primary Years and enthusiastically taking on these roles.

Defence Kids Club will be hosting their annual Free Dress Day in Week 8 on Friday 2nd of December. Students are invited to wear school appropriate clothing of their choice. If they choose to wear free dress they are asked to bring along a gold coin donation. Each year we donate this money to a Defence not for profit organization. This year we will be donating to Legacy Australia. Legacy Australia work with our veterans’ families experiencing grief, loss and hardship.

Barrumbi Kids

On November the 18th a new series launched on SBS National Indigenous Television (NITV) and currently ten episodes of Series 1 can be found online at SBS on Demand. Filmed in locations around the Northern Territory the story follows two best friends as they grow up in a remote community and learn about themselves, each other and living in both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures. You can check out the trailer at https://youtu.be/OKuuGLcBTb4.

Barrumbi Kids is based on a series of books written by Leonie Norrington an NT Writer. The first book in the series titled Barrumbi Kids won a CBCA Honour Award in 2003 and is aimed at Middle and Upper Primary students. Dale and Tomias are best mates. They live at Long Hole community. The kids struggle with school, the trials of growing up, and parental expectations. Life itself is full of danger - from wild bushfires, crocodile-infested rivers and the thick bubbling ooze of the blood pit. As a back drop to the children’s stories there is the land itself - a magnificent landscape of fire and floodplain, unbearable heat and towering storms. The Barrumbi Kids is a funny unforgettable novel that brilliantly captures the paradoxes of life in the rural Australia  with honesty and humour. - https://www.leonienorrington.com.au/the-burrumbi-kids

There are 3 books in the series – The Barrumbi Kids, The Spirit of Barrumbi and Leaving Barrumbi

With the end of the year fast approaching I will be sending out overdue notices every Friday, please check your child’s bag to see if they have one. If you have received an overdue notice and are unable to locate the book please let me know so we can check the library and classrooms to see if it may be hiding there.

Have a great week and Happy Reading
