Issue 7: Wednesday, 15th May 2019

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing commenced across Australia yesterday.  Our Year 3 and 5 students will be involved in assessments for writing, reading, numeracy and language conventions.

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.  It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.  At the classroom level it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Excessive preparation is not useful and can lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher.

NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learned over time through the school curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

2020 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENT

A reminder that we are now accepting applications for enrolment for 2020.

Parents need to apply to enrol your child for 2020 if they are:

·         starting Kindergarten – 4 years old by 30 June 2020

·         starting Pre-primary, the first year of compulsory school – 5 years old by 30 June 2020

Application for Enrolment packs can be located on the school’s website or available at the front office.  Please return your application to the front office by Friday 26 July 2019. Your support in spreading this message to our local families is appreciated.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY - TUESDAY 4TH JUNE 2019

This is an early reminder that we have a planned School Development Day on Tuesday, 4th June, the day after the WA Day long weekend.   This is an ideal opportunity for families to enjoy an extended long-weekend should the opportunity arise.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

With the cooler weather approaching, I encourage all parents and carers to ensure our children are dressed in their full school uniform.  Our uniform shop is well-stocked with a range of items to suit students of all ages.  Our uniform plays an important role in promoting a positive image of the school.

Yours sincerely

Semester 1 Reports

Your child’s Semester 1 Report will be emailed to you and uploaded to Connect on Friday, June 28th. If you have recently changed your email address please update your details with the front office. If your child’s report needs to be sent to parents separately, please email the school on Bertram.ps@education.wa.edu.au confirming the two email addresses to ensure they match our records.

Unexplained Absences

We have made great progress since last newsletter with almost 97% of our students now having no Unexplained Absences for Term 1. If your child brings home a pink note please complete it and return it to the front office as a matter of urgency. If you know your child will be absent from school, please advise the front office or their teacher the reason for this absence before it occurs. If they will be absent for an extended period of time, please complete a Future Absences form at the front office.

Litter

It is great to see so many families using reusable zip lock bags for sending food to school HOWEVER many of these bags are being discarded at school. Please remind your child to put their zip lock bag back in their lunch box once they finish eating so it can be reused. There are many chocolate wrappers discarded around the school each morning. If you are sending money to school, please remind your children what you are expecting them to buy with it.

Grandparent's Day

Grandparent's Day is one of our favourite days of the school year! Please remind your family to clear their calendar for Wednesday, June 12th so they don’t miss out on spending the morning engaging in activities with their grandchildren at school. If you don’t have grandparents available to participate in this event, other family members are most welcome.

See Saw, Skoolbag and Facebook are updated with whole school events on a regular basis. Please check in regularly!

STORYTIME AND BOOK BORROWING

It has been great to see more and more people coming to Storytime in the library before school on a Wednesday. Parents can come in and borrow a book to take home and share with their child.  Our guest readers have loved sharing their favourite stories with the people there. Come along next week, doors open to the Library at 8am.

INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The PE Team would like to thank the first ever Bertram Interschool Swim Team for their amazing efforts at the Kwinana Sporting Schools Association Swimming Competition. The Bertram swimmers made us so proud on the day, through their efforts in the water and their Bertram FRREE attitudes and behaviours. Team spirit and energy put a smile on our faces, and points on the board ? We cannot wait to return next year!

Special thanks to all who tried out for the events, to the teachers present on the day (and who supported us back at school by looking after students there) and to Mrs Weir and Mr Ashby for supporting the team so amazingly (Mrs Weir racked up over 8,000 steps escorting students to and from the toilets!! ? now that's dedication!).

Keep swimming and good luck getting ready for 2020!
