Term 1 Week 9-11

Principal Message

The end of Term 1 is getting close. We have our Easter Hat parade on Monday 3rd April at 10.30am. It has been lovely to see our senior students working closely with our younger students to prepare a special Easter hat. Parents and carers are invited to join us for this special ocassion.

Our school will be participating in the Lismore ANZAC Day March on Tuesday 25 April. Students should gather at Browns Creek carpark on Molesworth St between 8.30-8.45am on Tuesday 25 April (please look for the school banner and our LSPS staff). Students should wear their full school uniform if attending the march. We will follow the parade through the streets of Lismore, ending at the War Memorial. Students attending the march are required to be supported by a supervising adult on the day.

Thursday 6th April will be the last day of school prior to the Easter holiday break. I will be taking three weeks leave at the beginning of Term 2 and Mrs Newton will step in as the relieving principal in my absence. On behalf of all the staff here at Lismore South PS, we wish you and your family a happy Easter and safe holiday break. First day back for students will be Wednesday 26th April and this will be our K-6 Cross Country Carnival.

Kind regards,

Larissa Polak

Swimming News

Eight of talented swimmers attended the Northern Rivers Zone Swimming Carnival held earlier this term. They all swam their hardest and should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations on reaching this level of competition and for doing your personal best.

Northern Rivers Zone PSSA Selection Trials

On Monday 20th February, six senior students took part in the Northern Rivers Zone Touch Football selection trials held at Evans Head. All the students were able to participate in several games of touch football in different teams playing with and against students from many different schools. Our players gave their all and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Well done to Lexi, Tahne, Cruz, Michael, Logan & Braxtan for your participation.

Congratulations to Cruz who was selected in the Northern Rivers team. Cruz has gone on to represent Northern Rivers at the North Coast select trials. He has now been chosen in the North Coast team to play in the state touch football final held in Penrith. Well done Cruz!

Harmony Day - Year 1 Gargoon

Year 1 Gargoon had fun on Harmony Day with a focus on classroom community.  We played games and made some craft that helped us in building a sense of belonging where everyone feels valued, supported and included.  We listened to a story called 'All Kinds of Children', by Norma Simon that helped make connections of friendship.  We can continue this learning throughout the year.

Harmony Day - Year 2 Binging

The Big Vegie Crunch

Lismore South students participated in The Big Vegie Crunch, which is a fun healthy promotional event for NSW Primary Schools.  At 10am on Thursday, 30th March, hundreds of schools attempted to break the record for the most kids crunching on vegetables simultaneously to get children excited about vegetables.  Students were served a variety of vegie sticks in small ice cream cones with a dollop of hommus, kindly funded by Woolworths Lismore Central and Lismore South Public School P&C Association.

The Resilience Project

Our students are participating in weekly lessons from The Resilience Project. The Resilience Project is providing an engaging, year long curriculum mapped against curriculum standards. We program focuses on three key pillars proven to cultivate positive emotion;  Gratitude,  Empathy  and  Mindfulness (GEM). The program has a strong focus on Connection, Purpose, Kindness, Emotional Literacy and Physical Health.

Please see the information below.  If you have any questions about this program, please contact Gaye Titcume by phoning the school office.

Energy Drinks - Not for School

Please do not send your child to school with energy drinks, such as V, Red Bull, Monster or Prime. These drinks have caffeine in them and are not safe for children to consume. Recently, a number of students have tried bringing the energy drink Prime to school. Some students are consuming these drinks before school. One can of Prime Energy has 56mg of caffeine per 100ml, six times the 9mg per 100ml in a can of Coke.If you read the information on the bottle, it actually reads:“Prime Energy is NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 15, women who are pregnant or nursing, or individuals who are sensitive to caffeine."

If children bring these drinks to school, we will store them for safe keeping and return them at the end of the school day.

Office News

Mobile phones, including devices which act as mobile phones are not permitted at our school. In fact, from 2021, student mobile phones are banned across all NSW Department of Education (DoE) Primary schools. Any student phones need to be handed in at the front office and then collected at the end of the day, as per our existing long-standing policy. If there is an issue at school with your child/ren, the school will contact you.

Update Contact Information

It is important that your child's records are kept up to date.  If you have had any changes to; phone numbers, address, emergency contact people or family situation, please either send in a note or contact the office immediately to ensure our records are kept up to date. It is also very important to keep your child’s medical details up to date. Asthma and Anaphylaxis plans need to be updated annually.

Preschool News

We had a wonderful day celebrating Harmony Day; a day to recognise and appreciate our multicultural nation and the diverse backgrounds of our preschool families. We read 'Whoever You Are' by Mem Fox, and engaged in rich discussions about our differences and similarities, and that we all have the same heart and we are all special. We created a window display for our indoor environment with the handprint of each child and educator. We demonstrated our connections and friendships through creating a colourful paper chain. We enjoyed singing greetings from all around the world, looking and learning about maps, flags and different cultures. Children explored different identities through our small world play with people and animals from all over the world, and their own identity through creating self portraits.

It is wonderful to see children becoming aware of connections, similarities and differences between people and places, and responding to diversity with respect. Children demonstrated a sense of belonging and comfort in their preschool environment as they explored diversity through play and intentional teaching.

Collection of Children

A gentle reminder for families that Ngulliboo Jarjums is licensed to operate between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm. If your child has an older sibling who attends LSPS, please collect your preschool child before your school age child.

Toys From Home

We understand that it is natural that children wish to carry familiar toys with them and to show their friends items they consider precious. It has been our experience, however, that bringing toys from home to preschool can create difficult situations to manage. Hence we request that children do not bring toys from home into preschool (with the exception of one comfort toy for the duration of rest time). Thank you
