2022 Term 4 Week 6

Anniversary Celebrations

As you are aware Melrose PArk PS is situated on the border of two Local Government Areas, Parramatta and Ryde. I thank both the Mayor of Parramatta, Donna Davis and the Mayor of Ryde, Jordan Lane for coming along to the school's anniversary celebrations. They were both great sports and enjoyed meeting our school community. I thank them for their support.

A special thank you is given to Jordan Lane. Jordan was once a student at Melrose Park and he enjoyed sharing many memories of his student days at Melrose.

Professional Learning

Our students are learning and so are our staff. We value and prioritise time for professional development. Last week our leadership team and I attended a Masterclass, presented by Dr Simon Breakspear and Tom Sherrington regarding Leading Professional Growth Cultures. This day provided an opportunity for the team to reflect upon our actions as school leaders and seek improved practices, particularly around Professional Learning for our teachers.

Mr Steel and Mrs Piper are working together in collaboration with  neigbouring schools to support high potential and gifted students and demonstrate ways to engage and support these students to reach their potential. Marsden High School are leading this initiative.

All teachers are involved in our weekly professional programs in order to learn about the new curriculum that will be implemented in 2023. I thank our staff for their time and commitment they demonstrate ways to strengthen their professional practise and this is on top of their workload in classrooms.

Library News

Aboriginal resources

Our school is fortunate to have access to a range of resources presenting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content and literature. In recent weeks we have received some new material to add to our collection. Students have been enjoying these books during literature and library lessons learning about First Nation connections.

End of borrowing

It has been a wonderful year seeing many students borrow a range of books from the library, old favourites to new releases. This week will be the last week for borrowing. All books will need to be returned by Week 8. Reminders will be distributed to those students who have overdue books.

Thank you!

I would like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers who have kindly given time to cover new resources for our school’s library. Students are always eager and wait in anticipation for these new releases. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Learning in 4L

4L have been learning about different environments in Geography and last week we went on an excursion to Penrith Lakes to examine the environment there. If you have not been to Penrith Lakes we would highly recommend it. There are bike ways, bush walks and water sports. A great way to unwind in the school holidays.

Upon return to school, the students wrote a recount about their day and showcased all of the writing features they have learnt this year.

One of the Best Excursions EVER!

I awoke suddenly in a jolly mood to get ready for the day.

“It’s today!’ I exclaimed in my mind.

My dress was a tad wrinkly but I didn’t care! I waited until eight o’clock and then left.

I found my path to the garage and ‘yoinked’ my bike. The ride was a pleasingly, peaceful journey.

Surprisingly when I arrived at school, it was eight twenty! We’re going to leave in fifteen minutes!

The bus arrived at the school in plenty of time. Enchantedly I leapt onto the bus for the long journey (I slept most of the way).

When we got there Mr C and Mrs G welcomed us to the wondrous place and led us to the classroom. We chattered through an introduction about what we would be doing. Luckily 4L were first to get to do the Yowie Hunt!

Squish (the only yowie we had at the time) gave us clues to find all of the other yowies. We were told compass directions such as South, East, North, West and all the other ways.

Next we went bird watching. I don’t remember all the birds BUT I do remember we saw the rare grass parrots.

Then we had a fun lunch time. We got to play any game we wanted! It was a lot of fun.

After that we went off to do some dip netting. We caught freshwater shrimp, mosquito fish, water boatmen and more!

The hardest thing was next … LOOKING FOR BUGS! You might be thinking ‘Why is looking for plastic bugs hard?’ Well, because they forgot to hide them. So we had to find REAL bugs instead.

Before this we were recognising tree leaves, which was quite easy.

We then had our break. Our last meal at Penrith Lakes for the day. The last thing we did for the day was revise in the classroom.

I think this was the second best excursion of my LIFE and I felt ALIVE!

Stage 3 Geography Excursion

Stage 3, Year 5 and 6, went on an excursion to Fishermen's Beach and Long Reef headland. Students participated in many engaging activities exploring how sudden geological changes and extreme weather events can affect the Earth’s surface. We learnt about how the headland was affected by the 2016 storms and examined how the affected areas were rebuilt. We also got to explore the rock pools learning about different creatures, their habitats and how their adaptation process.
