Hammondville Public School Newsletter

Issue 26 - Term 3, Week 7 - Monday 2nd September 2019

A Message from the Principal

Welcome to Week 7

I would just like to say thank you to everyone who is a part of the Hammondville School community. We are nearing the end of a busy term and without everyone’s support and commitment to learning at Hammondville, we would not be able to achieve the things that we do for our students. It really does take a village to raise a child and I believe that by all working together in a respectful and cooperative way, we can ensure the success of everyone. Keep up the hard work Hammondville!

P & C Meeting

Tonight is our monthly P & C meeting. Please feel free to come along and listen to the wonderful plans we have for our school. It will be held in the school library at 7pm.

Positive Stars Week 6

I had the lovely opportunity to see many students across the school last week for producing excellent work, demonstrating outstanding work habits and being exceptional learners. Well done to the following students for being Positive Stars in week 6. Sophia, Oliver L. and Lucy in K Blue, Freda, Riley, Lachlan and Sebastian in 1 Green, Emma in 2 Red, Cash in 3/4 Gold, Ewen and Joaquin in 3/4 Silver and Zakaria and Shyanne in 5 Yellow. Keep up the great work and I can’t wait to see more students this week.

Zone Athletics

Congratulations to all our competitors who attended the Zone Athletics Carnival. Your behaviour was to be commended and your performances outstanding. You have made your whole school community proud. Congratulations to all those students who are proceeding to the next level, the Regional Carnival to be held on Friday 13th September. A big thanks to Mrs Stanley, Mr Withers and Mr Hughes who attended on the day.

Car Park

I would just like to remind parents and students that the car park is unsafe and students should not be walking through the car park in the mornings or afternoons. Please ensure you discuss this with your children.

NAIDOC Celebrations

Every year we celebrate NAIDOC day, this is a day to embrace and appreciate the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year we will be having an incursion that will take place on Wednesday 4th September. Thank you to Miss Harrison for her organisation and coordination of this wonderful day, I am sure all of our students will enjoy it immensely and will learn a lot.

Have a wonderful week of learning!

Our school office hours are 8:30am to 3:15pm.

EFTPOS Payments can be made between 8:45am - 9:00am and 2:30pm - 3:00pm.

Student Absences

The Education Act requires that a reason is provided to the school within 5 days of the occurrence of a student absence.

If your child is absent from school please notify us via Skoolbag or drop a note/medical certificate in our secure letterbox on the outside of the office wall. Do not send absent notifications to the class teacher via Class Dojo.

Late Arrival/ Early Departure

All students who are late to school must come via the office to receive a late pass, which is then to be handed to their teacher.

If you are picking up your child early from school you must visit the office first to receive an early departure pass, which you then give to your child’s teacher.

 Toileting Accidents

If your child is prone to toileting accidents please ensure that spare underwear and school clothes are kept in their bags.

If your child does borrow clothes from our school please ensure the clothes are washed and promptly returned to the office.

Nut Free Recommendation

Due to severe allergies of some students at Hammondville Public School, we do recommend that parents not send their children to school with nut products, eg muesli bars, peanut butter, nutella etc.

P&C Payments

All payments to the P&C must be CASH ONLY and in a separate envelope to school payments.

Partners In Learning Parent Survey

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 2nd September and 25th October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.

To access the survey for our school go to: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/70hm

We have also included a FAQ sheet in today’s newsletter regarding the parent survey.

The survey is available in 23 languages.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2020

If you have a younger child who is due to start school next year and you have not yet enrolled them could you please contact the office as soon as possible. The sooner we know the number of children who are coming next year the better it is for our planning as the number of children in Kindergarten has a significant effect on the make-up of our classes and staffing across the school. Our information night for the parents of 2019 Kindergarten students is Monday 23rd September at 7pm in the school hall.

Enrolment Changes For 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our school has increased enrolments to the point where we are reaching or exceeding a capacity to accommodate our students in permanent classrooms. The revised Department of Education Enrolment Policy implemented as of 22 July 2019, will have an impact on the manner in which we process non-local enrolments over coming years.

All students who reside within our local intake area will continue to be offered places at our school, however non-local enrolment applications can only be considered by schools that can accommodate new enrolments below their designated enrolment buffer level. A buffer is calculated by our school to allow the enrolment of local students who arrive throughout the year.

The impact of this requirement is that our school may not be able to enrol non-local students from 2020. To assist with the transition to this new requirement it has been agreed that non-local siblings of current students will be permitted to enrol in 2020.

As from 2021 the school may only be able to enrol local students.

The school will continue to have a non-local application process in place to prioritise any applications that may be considered exceptional circumstances or for any places that may become available if the school enrolment falls below the designated cap.

Please contact me if you wish to discuss these changes further.

Positive Behaviour for Learning News Week 7

We would like to congratulate all students for being respectful and conducting themselves in an appropriate manner both in the classroom and outdoors on the playground.

This week we will be focusing on “Being Respectful: Keep hands and feet to yourself.” We will explore what this looks like during our PBL lessons.

Please discuss this week’s PBL lesson focus with your child to reinforce the importance of showing respect and keeping their hands and feet to themselves and not hurting others.

Debating News

Last Wednesday two of our debating students Jules Cross and Mehar Gupta went to Greenway Park PS to the South Western Sydney Primary Debating Trials. They participated in some warm up sessions and a debate for the opportunity to represent the South Western Sydney region at the Primary Schools State Debating Championships in November.

Each school that participated in this year's Premier's Debating Challenge for the South Western Sydney area sent 2 students to represent their school at the trial. From this group of students only four will be chosen and they will consist of students from different schools.

We wish both boys the best in the selection process and look forward to hearing any news.

Premier's Sporting Challenge

This term, our school will be participating in the NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge which is a 10 week challenge for students. Award levels for the 10 week challenge reflect a daily activity time commitment. Students aged 5-18 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day, which in the challenge equates to a gold award. Activities may include time spent in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits during lunchtime, in school sport programs, class time, before or after school and on weekends.

Students in Years 3-6 received a logbook at the beginning of the term and they use this to record their weekly physical activity. At the end of the term students in 3-6 will be asked to hand in their log book if they achieve a Diamond level.

Students in K-2 do not receive log books for record keeping but receive a Gold award at the end of the challenge. Children should be encouraged throughout the challenge to be active daily and establish healthy habits. Students in K-2 received a fridge magnet at the beginning of the challenge.

Award Level - Daily Activity Time

Bronze - 30 minutes per day

Silver - 45 minutes per day

Gold - 60 minutes per day

Diamond - 80 minutes per day
