New K-2 Curriculum
All staff are currently engaging with professional learning targeted at building knowledge, skills and understanding of the new Maths and English Syllabus. Currently the K-2 contingent is being delivered in classroom teaching and learning programs. The 3-6 Syllabus components have been finalised and released and will be implemented from the beginning of next year.
As well as the content being different to the previous syllabus document there is a definite change to the teaching strategies that underpin the effective implementation of the new curriculum. This also includes ways that parents and carers can support learning at home aligned with the new syllabus. To address this we will be hosting information sessions for parents to attend throughout the year to share the syllabus content and bridge the gap between learning at school and home. I would encourage any parents who are able to attend to come along to these high quality info sessions. Many thanks to the parents and carers who attended Monday night’s meeting in the library with Mrs Selwood and Mrs Bell.
NAPLAN 2023
Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in the NAPLAN assessments from Wednesday 15 March until Friday 24 March which continues to measure student achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation. We have invested school resources to support the preparation phase for this test with students from both year groups and are confident they will complete the tests to the best of their ability.
ACARA have introduced changes to the parent and teacher reports to make them easier to read, providing clearer information about how a student is progressing. New proficiency standards with 4 levels of achievement for each year level will replace the previous 10-band structure that covered all 4 levels tested and the old national minimum standard set in 2008 when tests were on paper. The new proficiency standards include a baseline benchmark to identify students who are likely to need additional support.
The new proficiency standard will be included on all NAPLAN reporting including the National Report, the My School website, the reports received by schools and the Individual Student Reports (ISRs) received by parents and carers. The numerical NAPLAN bands and the national minimum standard will be replaced by the following 4 levels of achievement:
• Exceeding
• Strong
• Developing
• Needs additional support.
The descriptors for each category will make it clear to parents what their child’s literacy and numeracy skills are at the time of NAPLAN testing, and support discussions with their school on their child’s progress.
Student reports will continue to show the national average and the range of achievement for the middle 60 per cent of students in their year level, allowing comparison of a child’s achievement against these measures. Detailed information on the knowledge and skills being measured in each NAPLAN assessment will be made available on the NAPLAN website.
