Principal’s Message

New K-2 Curriculum

All staff are currently engaging with professional learning targeted at building knowledge, skills and understanding of the new Maths and English Syllabus. Currently the K-2 contingent is being delivered in classroom teaching and learning programs. The 3-6 Syllabus components have been finalised and released and will be implemented from the beginning of next year.

As well as the content being different to the previous syllabus document there is a definite change to the teaching strategies that underpin the effective implementation of the new curriculum. This also includes ways that parents and carers can support learning at home aligned with the new syllabus. To address this we will be hosting information sessions for parents to attend throughout the year to share the syllabus content and bridge the gap between learning at school and home. I would encourage any parents who are able to attend to come along to these high quality info sessions. Many thanks to the parents and carers who attended Monday night’s meeting in the library with Mrs Selwood and Mrs Bell.

 NAPLAN 2023

Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in the NAPLAN assessments from Wednesday 15 March until Friday 24 March which continues to measure student achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation. We have invested school resources to support the preparation phase for this test with students from both year groups and are confident they will complete the tests to the best of their ability.

ACARA have introduced changes to the parent and teacher reports to make them easier to read, providing clearer information about how a student is progressing. New proficiency standards with 4 levels of achievement for each year level will replace the previous 10-band structure that covered all 4 levels tested and the old national minimum standard set in 2008 when tests were on paper. The new proficiency standards include a baseline benchmark to identify students who are likely to need additional support.

The new proficiency standard will be included on all NAPLAN reporting including the National Report, the My School website, the reports received by schools and the Individual Student Reports (ISRs) received by parents and carers. The numerical NAPLAN bands and the national minimum standard will be replaced by the following 4 levels of achievement:

• Exceeding

• Strong

• Developing

• Needs additional support.

The descriptors for each category will make it clear to parents what their child’s literacy and numeracy skills are at the time of NAPLAN testing, and support discussions with their school on their child’s progress.

Student reports will continue to show the national average and the range of achievement for the middle 60 per cent of students in their year level, allowing comparison of a child’s achievement against these measures. Detailed information on the knowledge and skills being measured in each NAPLAN assessment will be made available on the NAPLAN website.

Attendance Focus

An increased focus on attendance has resulted in improved statistics across the school as a whole. A network wide campaign to improve the number of school days lost has been implemented across 21 Newcastle schools. We are tracking well across the schools. Here is an overview of how our grades are tracking week by week for Term 1 so far.

School Infrastructure Update

Our playground remediation works are set to continue with NSW Department of Education Assets Team continuing to work with the contractor for finalisation of the design for the playground area, with a concept for the ramp to the new amphitheater already being reviewed. The works to be carried out over the Easter break have been targeted around the sloped playground area near the 4/5M classroom.  The intent is to complete further encapsulation around the demountable area, which will enable to school to occupy a larger area behind the new amphitheater which means more play space for our students. More information related to the planned works will be communicated before the school holiday break.

 Third Party Software Permissions

Dudley Public School is committed to providing a technology-rich environment for our students. Our school community considers the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as fundamental in assisting teaching and learning in all areas of the school curriculum. The school uses third-party software providers offering web-based online educational resources and cloud-based storage to support our administrative functions and enhance student learning outcomes.  In most instances, students are required to register before accessing the software. Registration involves either a staff member or student entering identifying information such as name, school year, and the student’s school email address into the software.

A permission note for parents will be coming home shortly with details of software being used and the associated information storage processes for each software company.

Fire Safety Plan

Bushfire Season - September to March

Our school has been identified as Category 1 and in a bushfire prone area, which means. To ensure the health, safety and welfare of students and staff, the NSW Department of Education has determined that on days when a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating is issued for our area, the school will temporarily cease operations. This is based on information obtained through a bushfire assessment of our school arranged by the Department.  A Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating does not mean there will be a catastrophic fire, but rather weather conditions that could pose a high risk for a bushfire. The rating is a proactive measure to ensure staff, students and the community remain safe.

This is likely to occur on a very small number of days during the bushfire season, if at all. To ensure that we continue to support student learning on these days, I have put the following arrangements in place:

Students have access to online learning platforms.

The school will receive notification of a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating on the day before the forecast is issued through our skoolbag app and Sentral SMS System.

To assist the school in contacting all parents please ensure that you have provided us with up-to-date home or after hours contact details.

External Validation

Our school is currently preparing for External Validation (EV) which is a whole school assessment and evaluation of performance and processes against the School Excellence Framework (SEF). The School Executive Team are currently designing the EV submission collegially with the staff and are gathering evidence samples to show how we are currently performing against the SEF. Following this process we will then reflect on the feedback and comments from the EV panelists and design a new Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) to drive our school focus areas of improvement over the next 4 years. This is a worthwhile process to engage in and will assist to shape what the future of teaching and learning at Dudley PS will look like.

Have a wonderful week everyone,

Sustainability

Clean Up Australia Day Report  by Piper, Environment Leader.

Clean Up Australia Day is an important day for our community.

Australia has a lot of rubbish lying around in our streets, in our schools and even in the bush.

Our country needs to be rubbish free to protect people and animals.

On Friday, at school, we did a clean up.

After assembly each class went out to an area of the playground to pick up rubbish.

Some groups barely found any and other classes found a lot! Kindergarten went with their buddies which was fun.

The Garbage Guardians helped to sort out the rubbish so we could recycle as much as possible.

On Sunday was the real Clean Up Australia Day.

At Reay Park, some of the students from our school went to help clean up. They cleaned up the oval so it looks nice and clean as well as the street's around and the walk to the bluff. It made a big difference to our community.

There was 16,500 tonnes of rubbish that was collected on Clean Up Australia Day.

Garden Group - We finally had a Wednesday without rain last week. We obviously love how the rain nurtures our plants, but we also love our gardening Wednesdays.

This week, we started to learn about how plants can be grown (or propagated). We investigated our strawberry plants and noticed they are creating runners with tiny little strawberry plants growing from these (also known as nodes).

We chose a node each and planted them into pots to take home. Remember they'll need lots of water to drink until they grow some real roots.

Environment Leaders - We're delighted to have our new environment leaders for 2023.

Harry is working determinedly in the background, sorting out supplies and Piper has been busy planning activities and improvements to our garden shed set-up.

If anyone in our community is handy with installing hooks and shelves, we'd love your help!

Garbage Guardians - Our 2023 Garbage Guardians are out in force, protecting the Dudley bins and supporting students to put their rubbish in the right bin.

Assisting the school with Schools Clean Up Day was also an important job this week.

The Guardians were stationed at each bin and supported classes as they sorted the waste that they had found. We found a lot of things that really weren't garbage including balls and a pair of thongs.

Last week also saw the first Garbage Guardian assembly announcement, with Jaala and Lexi presenting Caitlin in 3/4W with her prize. Caitlin was nominated by the Garbage Guardians as she is always picking up rubbish if she walks past it and often stops to help others when they aren't sure which bin to pop their rubbish in. A future Garbage Guardian in the making - Well done, Caitlin!

Have a wonderful week.
